If we can incorporate regular movement into our daily lives we will feel the physical and mental benefits yet many of us view exercise as a punishment or an obligation.
Today’s Bitesize is from episode 109 of the podcast with Kelly McGonigal. Kelly is a US research psychologist, a lecturer at Stanford University and an author.
Kelly reveals how it’s possible to change our mindset to view physical activity as a way to engage with life. If we focus on calories and metrics, we may be missing the joy we can experience from movement.
She explains how going beyond what you think you’re capable of, whether that’s an endurance event or lifting heavy weights, can change the brain in positive ways.
Any movement is good for you though and can provide a reset for your mood and your brain chemistry. Repeatedly contracting any muscle, whether working out with weights or doing gardening, releases antidepressant substances called myokines that scientists have dubbed ‘hope molecules’.
Kelly gives us tips on how to incorporate more movement into our lives and find ways to move our body that we truly enjoy.

The longer I live, the more I appreciate movement for its own sake. In fact, the main motivation behind how I construct my workouts is maintaining mobility for as much of my life as possible. I want to hike and paddle and swim with my sisters and their kids and grandkids when they have them. I want to walk around under my own power and take care of myself until the day I die. If at all possible. And along the way I plan on having lots of fun doing it.

Much appreciated Dr. Chatterjee. Today's age of AI reduces very much of our movement. Great talk by Kelly McGonigal who emphasises the importance for all of us to also - initiate more movement for our own good.

Same here. That Ted Talk was one of the best ... her beautiful voice aligns perfectly well with the passion for topics she discusses, whether stress or movement. Listening to her book "The Joy for Movement" in Audible...great stuff and again, her voice is inspiring

If your body is weak, if your body is out of shape, then it may not be able to sustain you as a vehicle in this world. Many promising people have fallen because their physical health was inadequate to sustain the life that they had assumed. Here again you must assess your strengths and your weaknesses. Everyone physically has weak links in their health. What are those weak links? Where is your body strong and where is it fragile? What must you eat that is proper for maintaining a strong constitution? You must exercise every day and find the time to do this. Building the Four Pillars of Your Life, by Marshall Vian Summers. Let's engage with life and have movement in our lives.

Yes at any age! I have a badly healed spinal fracture from a while ago so I'm not going to be doing an ultra marathon but when the pools are open again it's better than yoga for me; and walking an enthusiastic little dog 2 or 3 times a day is glorious. The Marshall Vian Summers book was great!!!

Thank you SO much for having this conversation - assisting people to understand the importance of movement in their lives and finding joy in their movement everyday is my passion as a somatic movement educator and teacher. Motion is the magic potion to living in a vibrant, joyful and harmonious life! But our mindset and attitude towards judging movements as "good or bad", as well as using movement in ways that create chronic recurrence of pain often causes frustration. There are some very simple ways to approach movement during everyday activities that support increased healthy, happy living. Kudos to you for this interview! I have a lot of shame when it comes to exercise even though I look good. The shame of being not as strong as I want to be or the guilt of not having energy. It's tough to give your body what it needs inside and out.

I liked this terminology “positive dissociation” When terrified with life or continuous series of events like a drowning. Just as you breathe, you get hit and soon enough you freeze more and more... and I agree you freeze. Forget about moving, let’s talk breathing back to life .... Not trying to be negative here ... just that how the course can be reversed to a positive dissociation so that you can dissociate with the fear or the feelings freezing and associate with things that might start breaking the freezing or at least feelings... interesting indeed

I agree that getting people who aren't motivated to exercise is best done through an enjoyable activity. However what you miss is the mental toughness that is gained from completing a difficult heavy lift or pushing past a wall during a long cardio session. Only focusing on things that are easy and enjoyable isn't the best lesson in resilience. Life is more enjoyable to me knowing that I am fit and strong enough to run for miles at a moments notice or pick up double my bodyweight, that I can experience physical and mental discomfort when needed, these things aren't attainable if your only form of exercise is weekend tennis, though it's better than dying of a heart attack.

Actually enjoy? No one likes to run or lift weights, the obesity crisis is there for a reason. It is choosing discipline vs what you feel. That's what makes the difference.
