A part of Stanford's "Contemplation by Design" week, Jack Kornfield spoke in Stanford Memorial Church on November 10, 2015 about how a wise education includes the heart as well as the mind. It was an evening of stories, trainings and practices intended to foster emotional balance, increase focus, promote wellbeing and reduce stress.
The event was sponsored by the Health Improvement Program, BeWell, Ho Center for Buddhist Studies, Office for Religious Life, Department of Religious Studies.

Kornfield I never listened to him considering him to be typical new age author from marin. I've given up that judgement thankfully. Now I see Jack as an authentic Buddhist teacher. he never hesitates while teaching. IMO that's because he not only is living this for many years..more like he is what he's teaching. that's rare these days.

It's a beautiful quote, however the actual quote is hatred never ceases by hatred but by non-hatred. This is the ancient and eternal love. That's the actual quote from the Dhammapada. Love isn't mentioned in it. Still, nice saying.

@@JasonGafar My version says "For hate is not conquered by hate; hate is conquered by love. This is a law eternal." That could just be a Westernization of the actual saying in the original Pali, as hatred/non hatred sounds far more Buddhist, and hate/love sounds far more Judeo-Christian.

@@RamonaMcKean Yes, I love Tara Brach and her satsang meetings on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. I am finding that I am spending a good amount of time, nearly each day on KZbin, listening to past Buddhist teachings given by Jack Kornfield, and really growing to appreciate his wisdom, his humor and his humanity. Thank goodness for the presentation of these teachings, and those of Tara Brach, on KZbin. Take good care!

Jack Kornfield has given us much wisdom; however, there is more. Meditation is great to quiet the mind during meditation, however, it has its limitations. Spinoza, a 17th-century philosopher, gives us a method to strengthen our mind and live in clarity and truth. The power of understanding thyself leads to freedom from childhood trauma, negative emotions and can become a new reality.

He said that this supreme court justice guy goes on 90% how he feels about something. He said that's humourous. More like terrifying. Our lives are in the hands of men (and women) with immense power who decide our fate based on how they feel about it at the time.

After so long I still suffering some resentment specially towards family. In times of elections this feeling gets stronger due to the fascism going on here for a good amount of time. Resentment towards what I was thought in the school about a certain country in the middle east that I found out did the exact opposite in history...anyway...I wonder what a budhist wiseman would tell me to help me appease, relief from this negative affect.

I wonder if I could perform the loving kindness meditation for my torturer ... eventually look into his eyes and find a beautiful soul behind it... I'm not being sarcastic and/or ironic here... I'm dam serious. I've been practicing meditation and studying many diferent streams of budhism along the last years and still not found an answer for that. Cause we know that in some cases people doing something realy terrible they are not actually mentally , so to speak, disturbed but on the contrary, they believe they are doing something for the good and well being of their country, family, whatever. And in the same day someone can do something so terrible with another human being, they arrive at home at night and tenderly kiss their kids, wife and dog,,,like a nazi - or any other ideology and denomination at a concentration camp ... So I was thinking aloud while listening to Jack and decided to share this thought. Thanks if you feel like comenting. ( sorry the mistakes cause english is not my native language )

Moral practice is a right guaranteed in all the laws of humanity that seek to ripen the fruits of actions until they become wise and able to manage all the commands of the word in all internal and external forums without confusion, fear or anxiety from others،whenever we are able to transfer crises to later opportunities and make them tolerant symbiotic standards, all doors for good will open, no matter how the traitors try to close them in the face of the benefactors. There is no planting without the presence of water, as well as all the elements of tolerance must be available and we must be skilled in overcoming the mistakes of the oppressors and transferring them to justice headed by a living conscience before the law of the human condition. If we consciously turn away from life experiences to everything that would form the nucleus of compassion, we will also be able to lead the train of love to the stations of forgiveness and continuity towards building the human being. O deep wound in the body of martyr literature. Have the wolves of ignorance recovered from your vulnerability, or are they still bent on harming you more?! You unleashed your ewes of spontaneity over the poisonous herb of the treacherous, And you became like the unknown deceased. You have from me the hymns of the wandering song over a jasmine perfume. My eldest teacher I know that the hidden map of your chest carries burdens that your hands did not commit. But the poet's destiny is like a ship that was thrown out by all the ports, and it is destined to remain sailing without rest. I will recline on the sofa of concentration to rest from the weariness of intrepid toil, Let your contemplative teeth devour the fruits of your words I also find it palatable, As long as you are upright, you are not afraid of the wrath of the absurd winds. Alittle brother Ali Suroor

I believe many Buddhist teachers would say that there are no guarantees of results of meditation. I have sat with teachers in North America and in temples in Asia, all with different actions, movements, tics, etc. All are teachers that are human, inseparable from the causes and conditions of their births and social context. Also, who knows what is happening there in that auditorium that is affecting the flow of words, and Kornfield's response, as they arise in that moment? All of these may indicate the aliveness of the teachings rather than a memorized, canned speech about a commodified cure-all, as many portray meditation.
