I just got a fairly rusted 358 from an estate sale...thank you so much for producing this video. Just incredible information!

Thank you for this. My dad passed away and I inherited this same mitre box. I consider myself to be somewhat mechanically inclined but could not figure this one out. So glad to find this video!! Again, thank you soooo much!!!

Excellent video. I have been wanting one of these for a long time and just finally acquired a 358 with all the parts at an estate sale. This greatly helped me understand all the parts

Is there anything that Ron Herman doesn't know about saws? What a wealth of knowledge he has. Thanks for sharing!

I have the miter box. I do not have the 28 inch saw. I found 28 inch backsaw at True Value. I have to bring the miter box to the True Value hardware saw to see if the saw works with the miter box. Great video thanks for explaining so much about the miter box and saws.

I didn't know that those "often lost" parts even existed. Thank you, Mr. Herman.

I bought two spokeshaves at a flea market and the vendor asked me if I knew what the depth stop was. At the time I didn't, he insisted I take it for free, I'm glad I did, it fits perfect. 👍

Interesting video and good info. I found a Craftsman miter box that had the long saw and saw supports. It looks like a knock-off of the 358. I don't use it often, but there are times that it's handy. And for $10 at an estate sale, I couldn't leave without it.

This is great! Karma put this in my list to see. I know I don’t have a trip lever but I’ve got to go to the shop and see what all I’m missing THANKS

Great joy. My 358 is complete! The correct saw came with it and earlier I purchased a Disston made for the Stanley 358 (according to the etch), so I have two saws. Since my first post I found a trip lever, also with a replacement for the thumb screw. 😎

Great video. Do all the 358s swing to 60 degrees?

One of the key things you did not discuss is the "spring" inside the vertical posts. Those springs are key to the function of the saw. Do you have any suggestions on how to obtain replacement springs?
@popularwoodworking6 жыл бұрын
Ron actually discussed that with me and he doesn't spend time chasing actual replacements. There are a number of companies that produce springs in a dizzying array of shapes, sizes and strengths. He suggests finding the correct diameter and length through one of these companies. The strength of the spring is less important than that it springs in the right place! ;0)

Just a quick thought: if you turn that stop piece around upside down leaving the second rod. It could be a rest for longer boards- not?!

I have a 358 with the original saw release .. The style prior to these. I understand the older style didnt work so well
@garyfairbrother55324 жыл бұрын
that was a nice informative video. I was surprised by the little release attachment to the saw back. Was that an aftermarket add-on or standard with the 538? You said you had some made and I have the same saw and would like to buy one for it. Any other ideas about sourcing one??? Thanks.

im on a budget and need a *PRECISE* miter box that wont bend or get worn down easily so i can make extremely precise cuts. do you now anywhere i can buy a quality miter box new?

I hate thieves, pretty petty for someone to steal that rare part, you sometimes find the same caliber of people with antique tractors, my uncle had a lot of old tractors and little rare parts disappeared over time.

I am curious about the claim that the markings on the saw were due to lower educated workers. Where does this information come from? Is there a historical source for it or is it simply anecdotal? It seems to collide with the written material of that era. When one reads the books written for the tradesmen they were written in a very articulate English and went into great detail on the methods of the time. When one views the architecture of times past the geometry of the rooflines, staircases etc was quite complex. Many of the tables found on the steel square are virtually lost to the average builder of today but they were used then. Color me sceptical on this “claim” though it is possible that it contains some truth I need more.

It’s baffling how in America geometry arrived so late in schools. It’s time you’ll shift to centimetres and millimetres, it’s far less complicating
