Thanks for uploading this! So cool to see Will Lee play bass behind Stanley Clarke, then be given a short solo break too.

@TheHeliHagrid When you play that perfectly you can't have taken coke. And when you play like this you don't need coke to be on another planet !!

The thing about Stanley Clarke, is he's 6 foot five, has hands like a catcher''s mit, and he plays a piccolo bass with light strings and low-action. I actually had the good fortune of meeting Stanley Clarke in a restaurant in Topanga, Ca, where I used to live, and he still does, and I can't stress enough the size of his hands. He's kind of like the equivalent to "buckethead" on guitar, in THAT respect. Ofcourse, Jaco revolutionised bass playing more so, and the albums he plays on,are gold!

You know, these guys got a lot of opportunities to sit in like this over the years and I don't ever remember them doing badly. You're right, a nice gig for them. I would imagine a bit of the credit for this snappy and concise arrangement is Mr Schaeffer's.

The house bassist must have been in heaven with his sweet old J-bass, "Look ma, I'm shredding the bass alongside Stanley Fucking Clarke on national TV, yessss!" Would love to have been in his shoes that night.

the best non-music part of this is realizing @1:26 that yes, indeed.....he is wearing a wing-collar shirt, suit jacket, black leather pants and Nike hightops

The House bass was Will Lee one of the finest studio guys in New York I'm sure he was happy to play with Clarke but Will could play with anybody and did

Stanley Clarke is the music man. School Days, one of my favorite songs. and, yeah, there was a run that Stanley Clarke nailed! near the end of the song that was missing from this performance.

I wish talk shows would begin including instrumental solo artists again. I usually reserve today's Top 40 act for my washroom break.

Man Stanley can even do this song Radio Edit style and still make it dope as hell and in regards to Will Lee, here's a little known fact: dude is responsible for one of jazz music's classic bass lines, Westchester Lady by Bob James

I think that's Will Lee. A great bass player in his own right. Played for Spyro Gyra among others

What a very cool, condensed version of this masterpiece. I don't think I've seen the Letterman/Paul Schaffer band happier!!!! It's also ridiculous to compare Jaco and Stanley, which every motherfucker does. It's "apples and oranges", so to speak. Stanley was definately more visible on the scene than Jaco was; Jaco's debut was that album with Paul Motion, Carla Bley and a very young Pat Metheny back in 1974, which didn't really circulate until a few years later.

@jbc6 Jaco naturally comes up when Stanley is heard and vise versa...I toyed around with who's the better for years and has come to the conclusion it's a matter of which style of playing you like best as I have learned much from listening to both. You just can't judge with musicians of that caliber imo.......they both have been an influience in my playing over the years.

Other than that, Clarke is playing a Piccolo bass - They still need the other bass player to actually play bass.
@outlawtiki13 жыл бұрын
what kind of bass did he play?
@ShangoDC14 жыл бұрын
Not only should you just like Stanley's style better, he is/was better than Jaco. He could do more things with the instrument. Stanley liberated the instrument before Jaco came along about three years later.

Regarding the Jaco vs Stanley debate: you're ALL wrong! John Entwistle was the greatest bassist of all time! :-) (Hey, at least I didn't say Gene Simmons, or Lemmy!)
@joffyjazz14 жыл бұрын
I love Stanley and Jaco but Stan is an all around more trained musician. Jaco's jazz walking was somewhat unorthodox but I guess it was his own style. I did listen to more Jaco than Stanley after Jaco hit the scene but he burnt out too fast. On a last note Stan's Alembics from the old days just seem to sound so much better than his new ones. I think he auctioned a lot of them off during his divorce. What a mistake.

@TheArbiter74 yeah Stanley looks gi-normous.

Why play "Schools Days" and not some tunes from ther new album...??...Tempo slowed down...this band cannot play fusion....stick to pop tunes...
