Great job as usual MJ, Clear, concise & very informative! I know ur a type11 guy but for me type13-15s and as well as a stand out war time thick castings are what I always was looking for! Thanks again MJ...

Thanks MJ , I'd been waiting for this video. I like the type 14 as only made '29-30 and have the raised ring, but my favourites are still type 11. Best wishes for the New Year and hope 2022 is a good year for you.

Type 11s are my jam for vintage planes. Lie Nielsen make a pretty solid plane too 😅

Awesome and informative. Exactly the type study I was needing to round out my T13 collection. Now I have to break them all down to make sure all the componends are type correct. You're always a big help. Thanks for the crash course.

Good afternoon; First of all, I want to congratulate you on the spectacular content! I'm learning a lot from these classes and if I had accessed this content earlier, I wouldn't have suffered so much, making bad choices. Now I'm looking for a Stanley Bailey 5 Type 11/19 planer, for my own use and to start my collection. Do you have one available for sale or could you tell me where I could buy one? I'm in Fortaleza (Brazil).

Don't do wood work but just got a Stanley No. 3 type 14. I almost sanded the tote down removing the sticker until I saw your videos. I thought it might be from the 1990's looking at the sticker. Whew! good thing I checked your videos out. Thanks,

I use my no 5 1/4 type 13 as a scrub plane. I like it because it is has the blade length of a no 3 while being almost as long as a no 5.

Sounds like a solid set-up. I use a No5 with a wide open mouth and a nice camber on the iron for scrubbing duties.

I've been accumulating type 13 planes to use in my shop these past couple of years, starting with a #4 handed down from my grandpa. I just purchased a second #3 to replace one that had a cracked body and noticed a feature that I've never heard mentioned. My 4 other planes (cracked body #3, 5, 6, 7) have a raised cast base under the tote, while my initial #4, and my recent #3 purchase, both have the tote mounting directly on the flat cast base of the body. I'm assuming this is a change made during the type 13 era, considering that it appears that type 12s don't have the raised tote base, and all type 14s do, but it seems like a dramatic enough modification that I'm surprised it doesn't come up when discussing type differences?

From the other side of the pond, how much of the dating information can be applied to the equivalent sized Stanleys made in the UK? We also have Acorn branded ones that appear to be identical to Stanley branded tools. Until I started watching these old tools videos, I just thought a plane was a plane!

There’s a draft type study out for the UK made Stanley’s. Unfortunately I don’t have the link to it but you can probably find it on the web somewhere. As for Acorn planes, I don’t know anything about them. I’ve never seen one in person before

Thanks for the video, I have a 5 1/4 type 13 that has the sweetheart logo on the tote but not on the blade. Is it likely someone changed the blade?
@justplanefun
@justplanefun 3 жыл бұрын
That’s the most likely explanation. After almost 100 years, anything is possible. The original could have gotten used up, swapped out, landed on during a fall and bent up. It’s anyone’s guess.

Would a type 14 #4 have a “Made in the USA instead of the patent date? I have one with all the features (including the handle with logo and the non nickel plated key hole lever cap) but it doesn’t have the patent date or the ribs just the knob receiver.
@justplanefun
@justplanefun 2 жыл бұрын
Based on your description it sounds like it could be a type 15 perhaps. (I have a video out that covers a little bit about type 15s) It’s possible the lever cap could have been stripped of its original nickel plating during a previous restoration or it could have been replaced at some point. Without the patent date, I would be reluctant to call it a type 13 or 14

Now I'm confused. I got that single patent date on my number 5. I got the front knob receiver ring. But no Made in the USA. Just Bailey in front of the front knob.

Could be from the short transition period between 13 and 14. I’ve seen just a very few examples like this in the past. We can call it a Type 13a! The “types” are something collectors came up with decades later (in this case Roger K. Smith). They’re also based exclusively off the No4s so to see anomalies on a No5 is not unusual at all. Type 13.5! 😅

@@ureasmith3049 I just inherited a type 14 number 5 without Made in USA. I was getting confused too until I saw your comment. I wonder how long they made this variant. I’m going to restore it and get to work. Pretty cool using a 95 yr old hand plane.
@plantshots

Likewise. I have a type 14, No7 that doesn't have Made in USA. It does have a nickel plated keyhole lever cap but no paint on the Stanley logo. It's quite likely a later replacement, though.

@@chrisreeves5426 Yep. I've used it a lot, such as planing my bench top. Really like the way it feels in my hand, I prefer these (weight wise) to some of the heavy newer premium planes.
