In testing these ratchets the Stanley failed early with the handle coming off. The other thing to note was that the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh pro broke without using a cheater pipe and consistently has gear teeth slip rather than an anvil failure.

I recently purchased a Pittsburgh Pro extendable ratchet and tried using it on lug nuts that were severely over-tightened. The torque spec is 80 lb ft. Based on when the ratchet started to flex, this video gave me an idea of just how much they were over-tightened (probably around 200 lb ft over spec). The ratchet started to flex while I was using it and I ended up using a 24" breaker bar; with effort. It's nice to have an idea of when it will fail and that it can fail without using an extension. Also, I noticed too that it seems like the ratchet flexes when it's getting close to its failure point. That can be used as a good warning feature and an indication to get something bigger. I have the Stanley and I really do like it. I took it apart and lubricated it with super lube and it works smooth. It definitely a keeper along my vintage 36 tooth Snap On 3/8 flex head ratchet.

I'm going to have to go with the Pittsburgh Pro. I think that on any given test the numbers might be better. That with the $5 off and easy warranty replacement make it a winner IMHO. Always wondered if these extendable ratchets were any good; I have different length ratchets in 3/3 & 1/2 to use in place of an extended length one, but after seeing this video I'll actually go and get one. I’m a Lube Tech at a Kia Dealership and I regularly use my 1/2 inch extendable Pittsburgh ratchet with a 17mm socket as well as a 27mm socket when loosening and tightening drain plugs and paper filter cases and my only complaint is that the coated handle adds a little weight, otherwise I think it is a great product!

Duralast and HF for the win, both good warranty experience. The new Duralast I find have went from a tiawan to China manufacturer. All duralast sockets in stores are now Chinese and no longer have the blue or red stripe which I liked. Great video.

I was a little surprised by the handle on the Stanley coming off during testing. All things considered, we did push it to over 225 lb-ft with a cheater and I'm guessing that loosened up the internals on the handle.

See the husky has the seal around the anvil that I wish the ICON had...also you should start using (or already should have been using) the ICON socket to see what happens to them over time of repeated extreme Tq. And to monitor the inside dimensions over time to see if it widens the tight tolerances you’ve discovered that they had brand new. And see if you can get them to give a little over time. What the worst that could happen? You have to warranty an ICON socket?.... oh no the horror. When would you ever be near a Harbor Freight to warranty it out? Oh gosh...😉 I’m sorry for the funny sarcasm. But I’m sure you get the point and you get the good humor.👍🏻🤙🏻✌🏻 you could even do an ICON warranty video about the experience. Then one more video down the line too. a follow up if an open box of ICON tools ever hits the open box section. And how much they might want for such items. 🤔😉🤫🤭

I bought the Harbor freight one as I was on a long drive and just needed a tool quickly and I have been using it as the 3/8 I go to for a while now, it's just nice being able to work on a spark plug that is behind the firewall and extend the handle to be able to reach it, very useful tool for like $15.

Duralast and husky were almost exactly the same breakpoint at approx 250ft/lb. I almost bought a husky today, but the lack of a locking system stopped me. You can even see this guy struggling a bit to keep it straight the more force he exerts. On a side note I gotta admit, the stanley one is incredible, i have two of them that have been my go to automotive ratchet for years. I only wish that it had a smaller arc swing

I have both the Husky and Stanley. I put them in my car kits because they are versatile. I don't use them much, just when I am trying to fix a car on the side of the road. I also have a breaker bar in the kit, so I can use that for the heavy stuff. Anyways, great video.

Just broke mine ...12+ years master tech ... It's ma go to 60 teeth makes it strong lasted years until it didn't . Love it will warranty for another . More teeth are better for access but not for strength. I put my tools through alot and it's nice to know you don't always have to spend hundreds

Interesting. I just used the Stanley to check the spark plugs on my car two days ago and find it heavier than my ezred. It works fine but I think I still prefer my ezred flex head. I got the stanley to keep with my small set I carry just in case I need a bit more leverage since that's like a 7 inch ratchet. I'll keep an eye on that extension. I guess it would help not to swing them out like you did. It's not a star wars sword. Lol. They do work as intended as you mentioned which I like. In short you are also missing the ezred and kobalt flex head so you may need to get a new Stanley and do the test again with the others.

That is one ratchet (full chrome Duralast 1/2" 36t fixed or long flex) I don't own and could never seem to find it in stock. I have it in comfort grip but the handle would be too big.

I have 3 husky. Used to be $28. Now Pedi-biden made them $10 more in last year. Great for brake caliper bracket bolts. Never broke one yet. Best warranty hands down. Made in chinesium. 72 tooth. I don't borrow them out. I put the 144 tooth mechanism in mine. Now that's better than strap off JUNK for 25% of the cost. 2.5 degree angle now.

The 72T Duralast and Husky ratchets are made by GearWrench/Apex Tool Group. lol. A Matco 88T rebuild kit should fit in the Husky. A Craftsman 72T kit should fit in the Duralast one. At least it should. It did in my dads 72T craftsman ratchets and they are the same design, anvil and all.

Max out test the take off ( CCW ) torque, not CW torque. I would go to 1/2" drive on anything more than 100 ft/lbs to tighten. Also I'm putting the 1/2 " version with the spare tire in place of the tire tool. I'll use sockets on the lug nuts and the scissor jack. The tire tool is a major hassle to use but I'll keep it as a spare. Having a flat is a hassle enough, only to fing you have to use crappy tools to change the spare roadside. I was going to go electric but we all know that won't work when you need it! Thanks for the testing. It helps.

I use the Stanley in my mobile bag that I help family and friends with, love mine! The positive about the Stanley is: the design used is the strong design before the updated straight ratchets with the plastic parts! I stopped buying snap on when I had a harbor freight ratchet finish the job after two broken snap on ratchets. My tool truck guy was so heart broken when I showed him what finished the job and told him that a hobo freight did the job better at $20 and he had to fix my ratchets things got awkward after that... Still have my snap on stuff and some things you can only get from snap on but it just don't hold up the same these days

I really wanted to like the Pittsburgh one when I was handling it at HF. I just couldnt understand why they put a 1/4in head on it. You shouldn't need to be able to put that much torque on that small sockets. Just made the ratchet head too big. But on the other hand it they made it 3/8 and 1/2 it would have been in my toolbox already.

For extendable handles the handles are a potential weak point if they are not beefed up. This i why I wasn't surprised that the Stanley failed at the handle because it had the thinnest one.

The harbor freight was a little disappointing but it hit 216 right but failed under 200 but spec for 3/8 in like 150 or something right so you should obviously be going to 1/2

I can tell you one situation where I almost always need something like this. When doing brakes, I almost always need a breaker bar to undo the rotor bolts. The problem is the breaker bars are sometimes too long and cant fit in the wheel well. This wrench is going to be amazing in those situations. No more looking for a cheater pipe. No more worrying about clearance. At $10 after coupon and lifetime warranty...this will be a no brainer.

So the moral of this story is unless you're a gorilla on crack and you don't do retarded shit with your ratchets and use breaker bars when common sense dictates, your hand tools usually wont fail you under normal working conditions. I actually have two of the Stanley extendable ratchets but I think I will also invest now in one of the Husky brand extendable ratchets as well. H.F. is also a really good bargain..they have a lot of my money lol. Great video as always! :-)

Grrr. I really wish you had gone into the failure on the Stanley a little bit more...or at least showed what it looked like apart and the internals of the handle. I cant believe you are holding it in two parts for quite some time but you only show the back side of the head side of the ratchet and we never see the front where the guides and locking channels are...like what happens at the bottom of it with the channels? I came across one where the head was stuck at 90 degrees with the head tilted down rofl...pretty much unusable but I was able to get the locking pin to work after a ton of fiddling with it. The extend mechanism on it is quite rough and tons of rust came out when I used wd-40. The lock ring and spring both quite rusted but I think they'll be ok now that they're clean. Before I finish cleaning and put it all back together, I want to take the handle apart and clean it better. I have been able to get the small piece of the handle that allows you to extend it and unlock it off. Now it's just the head end stuck into the handle end but I havent been able to figure out how to get them apart...meh
