I just discovered this tuning on my own as well. I love octaves. I was trying to get the same fingering for octaves on all strings...after I did it ...I Googled it...come to find out...it's perfect 4th tuning. Mind blown 🤯 Should have been doing this the last 20 years. And who tf is this guy and why have I never heard of this monster until right now?

Same as others here, started playing a bass, and I just couldn't wrap my hand around standard tuning. I also play left-handed upside down, which made certain 6-string chords even harder. Nowadays i just play baritone uke and tenor guitar in P4 tuning. And I totally agree with Stanley Jordan about the beauty of the symmetry.

This fourth tuning makes more sense than standard tuning but how would that change the shape of the chords??
@charlie35lc2 жыл бұрын
Consider D major triads: Here are two not affected: 554xxx x12 12 11 xx In standard tuning you could have: xx777x but this would become xx776x So it’s the same shape as the first two. Or in standard tuning: xxx232 which would become xxx221. All root inversion triads would have the same shape regardless of what strings they are played on.

I've always disliked that B string (changes to 3rd) And except for slide, never had any idea you had the right to retune. Picked up a cello recently. Tuned in 5ths! Boy did THAT get me thinking. Was considering retuning to fourths until I started reading. Amazing stuff.
@EchoLog Жыл бұрын
All fourths, all fifths, or a mix of the two. Optionally throw in some unisons and thirds if you have more than 5 strings.

Why is P4 musically better than Standard tuning? Music, like storytelling, is a matter of interpretation. We learn language rules and many words to tell stories in our own way, but don't always quote paragraphs written by others. So I think it was a great mistake by many to teach the guitar by copying "hand positions" of famed players in order to learn songs, instead of interpreting their sound. That is why more intuitive music-making tunings were abandoned for the sake of seemingly "easy copycatting." The guitar playing became harder and more confusing than necessary. If the music was really the goal of tuition, then we'd have at least 30-40% of musicians playing in P4, instead of 99% playing in Standard.

the standard tuning was designed with classical acoustic in mind, as a solo instrument, much like the piano it has the bass, the mids, the sopranos etc, and you have to play them all together all what barre chords and cowboy chords are, is basically playing root and 5th on left hand, and the whole chord on the right hand, root third 5th and octave on a piano i dont think thats necessary for modern guitar, specially metal and jazz, where powerchords and shell voicings are preferable

same thing happened to me, grandpa showed me fourths trick to tune, and at some point i didnt realize i had b and e set to c and f its better though, maybe this natural tendency was right all along, and the cowboy chord method is a bit gimmicky, who knew also, isnt it strange how people want to sound unique but copy eachother because "it works"? lol edit: been researching for 4 days, seems all the p4 players are verryyy happy many of them wishing they weren't so shy of it earlier on if virtuosity is coming back like people are hyping up sometimes, p4 tuning would make way more sense for flashy soloists who want more consistency on the board also, I'm teaching a new guitarist using p4, it's been a blaze fast, there are no learning resources for p4 tuning, so, hard-core theory is the only way for us to get straight to jamming, progress is epic

"keep" - yeah, well, when you already know how to play, its not useful to try and switch. its got nothing to do with the tapping. it is also difficult to learn from others with p4. as it so happens, I just started this at a very late age and decided its better for me as things are quicker to learn, and the internet cannot teach me much with tapping anyway.

Cool. Yeah, I mean, one time I tunned my guitar to a lute tunning, you just need to change one tring from the regular tunning. It changes the shape of some chords, it''s good to force your brain to think different I guess.

I play D standard. I tried P4 tuning whole step down then I went straight back to regular D tuning. Its great for scales and triads but playing 5 note chords are a bit cumbersome. The open medleys are based around the key of F in P4 tuning highest tuned string determines the relative key. Standard is based in E so changing the the two treble notes a half step higher makes it F.
@hermask8154 ай бұрын
Would they notice that you tune it? Because if you play a known melody right, they should ignore you. (A total beginner wouldn’t know how to tune and surely not P4).
