The commentator, Jimmy Jacobs, mentions that Papke won the second of their fights. It has been asserted that at that fight, whilst being introduced, Papke struck Ketchel an unexpected punch. This shocked Ketchel and he took a sustained beating hence the loss. In the return (the Third fight) he took his revenge and gave Papke a beating.

Notice how they come alive in round 17, -20. Also they put hands up as they came in close to one another. Dropped hands at a distance. Old time boxing had it's own logic.

I love the critics cause it's not you in that ring for 20 rounds, it's not you getting hit by fist wearing 5oz gloves, it's not you before a massive crowd earning respect. as a matter of fact it could never be you cause you wouldn't have the backbone to fight for 20 rounds just to put food on the table!

It's hard to imagine the sheer toughness of these fighters,,, I've always heard these old fighters were the greatest... not criticizing, but the more recent middleweights would have destroyed them.. Hurricane Carter, Marvelous Hagler, Tony Zale, Sugar Ray Robinson, Gene Fullmer, Rocky Graziano, Zab Judah.. Emile Griffith, Tommy Hearns, Carlos Monzón and many more.. In fact, I can't think of any modern day great who couldn't beat these guys.. But like you said, being there in the flesh is a big difference then watching old films.
@stevenwilson9280
@stevenwilson9280 5 жыл бұрын
@@CYBOPOD88 I wouldn't say Tony Zale was modern day 1934 - 48, as for Hurricane Carter he was a Journeyman boxer 27-12- 1. If Boxers back then fought boxers today they would have the fitness of todays boxers.

Two tough, brave men. But it seems so crude. No protective cups, which would explain the near naked Papke, and their determination to tie each up and clinch so tightly when at close range.

Tough, super fit hard-men. Their exchanges seem to indicate that they're very aware of being hit in the "groin". Very quick to grab and clutch in close. No cups then, and from what I've read, neither of these fellows were noted for being particularly gentlemanly in the ring. I wonder if any attendant was brave enough to pick up Papkes discarded Jock strap in the dressing room after the fight. Perhaps it's still there, untouched. Buried, humming away. And why did the referee choose to wear that ridiculously huge night shirt with the long flapping sleeves. It gets in the way and the cuffs get soaked in blood. Their fighting style seems to hark back to the days of the London Prize Ring.

No jabs or combinations, no footwork, hands at their waists, little straight punching, plenty of what today in the UFC is called "dirty boxing". Not much strategy, it's all about asserting your will; the ref sure gets a workout. With these techniques why do so many call these old timers great fighters? Of course for their day, but compared to even today's diluted pool?

ask mayweather that. infact ask any fighters thst change the momentum of the fight by wrestling or clinching , ask Duran etc., there's a art to that snd believe me it's much more exerting to wrestle another fighter and punch than just to punch alone ,there's a difference in muscle endurance and it takes someone who is totally inshape to go 20 rds like this; let's not mention these guys fought many times in a month and Stanley fought over 20 rds and many fights aren't properly recorded via box rec ,these men fought well into the 300 mark in there careers, imagine boxing a guy that's 210 and you are 150 , now let's go further now imagine you box the heavyweight champ and make it into the 12 Rd ,then get koed and your out could for what was recorded as well past 2mins.. only to get up with your front teeth missing and fighr the next week and win . if that happen to today's fighters they would be brain dead. let's face it; today's fighters aren't as technical, as smart or tough. they are softer and pampered and have a cuter way of fighting , it's no longer a sport it's merely "show business with blood" -frank Bruno

@Mister Wiggy hands are not down near waist , look at how papke comes in , rear hand in a parry position to stop jabs and his lead hand pumping feint jabs so hes defending nad in position to whole time until he can get close enuff to clinch ,a lot mroe scientific than walking up with a high guard letting the opponent bomb on you while you try to close the gap!

You don't know that for sure. This was Stanley Ketchel's 5th fight that same year. And in those days fights went 20 rounds. One fight alone is enough to take a lot of a person, let alone 5 world championship fights, especially with those small light gloves.

@@truthhitman7473 dude, Marco Antonio Barrera would have destroyed either of these guys. They didn't have the technique back then. Usually slim fighters are the best fighters. Being fat in boxing is not an advantage. Research photos of Sugar Ray Robinson in Welterweight. He looked like a toothpick but he was 6' tall for a welterweight which is HUGE thus he got the job done.

Sam Langford was just a shade under 5'8" not 5'6" as is often mentioned. He took it easy with Ketchel because he hoped to get him in a longer more lucrative match. Had he ko'd Ketchel, it would've scared off white heavies.
