The problem was that Russel Crow is too small. He's not as inappropriately small as Tom Cruise was as Jack Reacher - but too small to be a credible heavyweight. So they redid the history and made Baer into a cruel big and scary monster. In the TCM Baer film they had the real Primo Canera play himself. He made the real Baer look undersized.

I think Max Baer would've knocked Galento out eventually if it weren't for Galento's injured hand. Galento was hanging on and taking too many shots. As tough as he was, a man can only take so much. Baer was a very hard hitter.

Messy fight, but reading some of the silly comments on here, just remember, this is nearly 80 years ago! @@robsmith9093 Not true. That fight went 4 rounds. Galento staggered Louis in the first round and won it. Louis took the 2nd round and knocked Galento down, who also jumped right up. Louis was hardly carrying Tony in the 3rd when he got knocked down but jumped right up. In the 4th he finally put together a flurry of punches and Galento sank to the canvas and the ref called a TKO. It's a wonder state boxing commissions gave Galento a license to fight in 1940, or whether he could have even passed a legitimate pre-fight physical, given his over-weight and obvious lack of conditioning. His mouth was wide open from almost the opening bell, struggling to breathe. The man was as tough as a nickel steak, but was no boxing athlete and probably took his life into his hands every time he stepped into the ring at this stage of his career.

That was the worst boxing match I have ever seen. Who was the short, fat, old, bald guy? He looked like he was 55 years old. Neither of them could box or punch with any power. No defense at all by either. That was the most pathetic thing I have ever seen. Max Baer sucked.

He owned a Bar in Orange, NJ. (where I was Born) and would train at 2am after the Bar closed according to Wikipedia. It also said ""A typical meal for Galento consisted of six chickens, a side of spaghetti, all washed down with a half gallon of red wine, or beer, or both at one sitting." Fat Slob, Lol!
@umac76
@umac76 4 жыл бұрын
Certainly he trained, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to stay in there more than a round or two with fighters of the stature that he fought. He just liked to eat way too much. He fought heavyweight at only 5' 9", so the extra weight actually kept him on a bit of a par with his opponents.

these are the comments from a guy in the comments on the joe vs bowe vid who isn't sane name is oneshot I watched full matches of Joe Louis's fights not highlights. He was very explosive and fast when he wanted to be. You can say that boxers that came after were more advanced with less flaws all you want and diminish his skills all you want, but pretty much every boxing expert and fan agree he was the most technically complete boxer in heavyweight history you compared one of Louis's opponents to one of the best best fighters in the 80's. How does that translate to Louis's own skill? You say fighters from this era don't have good blocking and clearly haven't seen Louis's amazing defense and head movement. How he prevents his opponents from throwing counters when he does, how he prepares to duck one if it does come, how he'd parry his opponents punches with both his lead and rear hand, how he'll constantly change angles to make sure he doesn't stay straight in his opponents line of fire. You say he was flat footed and slow, but you forget that he was trained to not move around a lot and only do so when he needed to. That's exactly what he did. They fight fifteen rounds and he saves his stamina by doing what he does. Your video proved nothing about Louis's ability and only showed a direct comparison between a couple clips of one of his opponents and someone more modern. H The video is a direct comparison between two fighters from two different eras, not analyzing the eras of fighters as a whole, and most certainly not Joe Louis You should look up videos of his head movement and defense if that's what you believe. His defense was one of the best the heavyweight division has seen to this day. The average fighter in the 70-s and 80's aren't beating the greats of the 30's and 40's. Technique didn't improve anywhere near as much as you think It only compared Primo to Wlad and didn't showcase really any other fighters. You can't take just two people and generalize the whole eras with just those two, especially if one is one of the best and the other is one of the worst The average fighter in the 80's-90's may be better than one from the 30's-40's. They just aren't better than the greats of that era His defense wasn't horrendous but it definitely wasn't good. Joe Louis didn't waste punches, had real defense, much better punch technique, pivoted to control space, was faster and more accurate, didn't throw wide hooks and uppercuts but controlled and accurate punches that could knock you out or rattle you from 6 inches away or at arms length. He was far better at all of that then either version of Georg Old George was better than young George and yet he was still inferior to Louis in every category except for punching power and chin. If he was far slower and more flat footed than Louis, had worse technique,

So was Baer. But Tony out dirtied Max in this one, or at least as much as we saw. Baer was notoriously dirty in the ring, low blows and back hands were his favourite little tricks. he too had a tendency to hit on the break and to not hear the bell if he was doing well when it rang. He wasn't the villain that Cinderella Man movie made him out to be, but he was noted to be a dirty fighter, during his career.

Well said sir. As a former boxer, who's faced an unconventional brawler or two, I can also say that Galento's style is intimidating. An opponent willing to take whatever punishment is necessary to land his hay-maker is tough. Max wins here because he punched harder then just about anybody whose ever laced em up. (that wild overhand right of his was brutal) But a fighter that couldn't hurt Tony, and most of them couldn't, is just waiting out inevitable doom.

Matthew Ed Stillman You’re right. Galento could take most clean punches right on the jaw and fire back and hurt you. His left hook was murderous. Also the elbows and head butts and the rest of his tricks. He got out of breath but still he could go a long time. I’d sure be scared to fight him or spar with him. If you’re not Joe Lewis or Max Bauer you’d better have great movement and a great jab and great stamina.

They did not have the same techniques those days. Not until Joe Louis really did they have any science behind it. Plus a lot of times when you go to hit someone with a wilder type punch they aren't there anymore and you have to change the direction, it makes the punch look awkward. In those days some of the lighter weight fighters had better technique, heavy weights were always sloppy. The heavies tired easily, some didn't train the way they should have also. By about the 1960s you see more and more science and technique in the ring and with training.
