I bought a 78 last month and for the life of me I can't get it to work easily. Paul makes it look like a doddle! I need about four hands to get the iron set into the base while keeping it at a right angle and trying to figure out how far the iron should go into the mouth to allow good adjustment forward and backward!

I got one of these. My late Dad was a finishing Carpenter and it appears to be well used. Made in Canada.

Personally I prefer using my #78 and my skewmouth much more than my electric routers. I feel more in control, especially with nowty wood which if an electric router gets hold of it can do some pretty serious damage. I also just like using planes, spokeshaves, chisel and scrapers. I’m not sure how much the box adds to the value, and they can add a lot, but my #78 was £7. I’m not a collector for collecting sake, same with my analogue cameras. I buy things I like to use and mine has gone with all my other planes. I accept there are people out there who like to keep things in pristine condition, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Perhaps we need those people to counterbalance my treatment of tools, though I do keep them in the best working condition. I might feel different when I find a pristine #55 with a full set of irons for £10. A very enjoyable video, subscribed. I’ve just looked and it looks like you stopped making videos a few months ago. Don’t give up, we need young people like yourself, especially this side of the Atlantic. The Americans seem much more supportive of young talent than the British or Irish (I can say that as I have a foot in both camps). Keep going, the numbers will come.

Hi , enjoyed your video. Just bought two of these off ebay. Paul Sellers has two useful videos on the No 78 - one for how to set it up and use it - very helpful. The second is how to use it as a scrub plane - this would be great for your spare blade. Can't wait to try mine out!

Long thumbscrew holds the depth stop, short thumbscrew holds the fence to the rod.

great video ! i don't know if i may be of use to you or your viewers but i just started making reproduction of the depth stop . also many of the clones of this plane the the stops alignment groove on the other side of the screw hole (proprietary stuff so you'd have to get parts from them i suppose) i can make throws as well. there's a lot of them missing and i hate to see good tools go unused . if its ok can i add a link to my listing? ill give every one a discount that comes from here.
