This was a big help; thanks! Based on your guitar pick shim, I have a theory that years stored in a hot garage, and that rubber based had degraded and compressed. The high-tension plate that slams down on it (and drives the staple) seems to have compressed the rubber base over time so that the plate (under high tension) became just out of reach of the twin hooks designed to grab and pull it back up into “cocked” position. I didn’t have a guitar pick but used two layers of thin plastic from an old health insurance card. To get that all to fit, I did have to shave a little off the front and back of the rubber piece so that it could slide under the metal guides with the added height of the shim. I used the shaft of a screwdriver oriented across the front of the stapler to pull the plate under tension up high enough to slide the rubber piece out the side, then back in. Reassembled it all, and I’m back in business! I have a theory that I may have kept it stored in my garage withOUT having the lock mechanism engaged. I think that *may* be designed to keep the tension off the rubber base. So this may have been my fault and may have been preventable.

Brilliant video thanks. I had looked at the other guy's solution but didn't look like it would work for me. But your shim worked a treat!

Thank you. Works like a charm. Actually, better than new! Didn’t want to sacrifice a good pick, so I used a plastic bread clip / tab. It fit almost perfect. Shaved a little on the edges with a box cutter. I had to really push on the tip to get it to slide in with the rubber piece. Anyone having trouble putting it back together should watch Brian Mann’s video. I had rebuilt several times based on his video before finding yours. Thanks both of you.

Followed your bread-bag clip suggestion and it worked a treat; great idea Michael! Trimmed the clip to get it flush with the stapler body; also cut a little away from the angled base of the rubber piece to get it to slide in easier. Still a snug fit though. Works perfectly again. Cheers mate!

Thank you, works for me too. Stapler not used for long time, pratically new, but I lock the handle when I store it and I think this compress the rubber part too much.

I had the exact problem on a Craftsman 68447. Looks like the same design. I cut a piece off a zip tie and used that to shim the rubber block.

Kevin, I went through the same thing, fiddling with the upper spring part. But the gist of your instruction "I just put it in there", do you mean under the bottom rubber 1/4" piece, or between the two rubber parts... where is "in there"? Also, the two rubber parts seem to be unmovable. How do you put anything under either one of them? By the way, I found a helpful trick to keep that upper part mess together: when you slide the initial metal piece down and to the left, instead of leaving it off and risking those small parts coming apart, reverse it bottom to top and slide it over the upper assembly, locking the hook part over the same big pin, only upside down. It keeps it all together while looking at the rubber parts.

Ive bought a half dozen of these, they all do the same thing. throw away and bought another just so it could break too. I looked online for hours and no where could i find how they go together. Google patents has a decent diagram, it even lists part #s, but still was no real help. So I contacted Stanley about a diagram and parts , they claim they cant do either due to safety concerns. what BS! I'd read 1000s of online posts about this issue. They were saying the catch that grabs and lifts the leaf spring, or the spring, had rounded edges so it couldnt grab it to lift. After inspecting mine, these parts are hardened steal and nothing was rounded. Then I happened to touch that rubber block the spring sets on, and mine crumbled into 100 pieces! And this is the problem IMO. Over time it gets compressed and doesnt hold the leaf spring up so it can be lifted to fire the staple. So Im attempting to make a new and better block. I'll either fix it , or cut my fingers off trying to cut this heavy silicone to fit. Lol Your fix kinda solved the problem for now. Though I suspect eventually that block will crumble and it wont work. I will never buy another stanley tool again! Overpriced junk these days

long story short, my silicone didnt work! But you might be able to fix this rubber block if it crumbles with a 3/4" diameter automotive hose cut to fit the height from the base to the leaf spring. I also stuffed the hose with part of hose and used contact cement to hold everything in place. Mines worked for a couple days. Also a friend told me you might be able to buy parts from Arrow but Ive not looked.

Well, I took it apart and squeezed the trigger and had those black pieces fly out. Now I'll have to search for how to put the thing back together. Thanks for the video on how to further break your staple gun. Not very helpful.

Seriously, you take off that part (it’s really hard to get the spring clip off), and the whole thing falls apart. Have to buy a new staple gun now.
