Stan, my wife and I just bought our first home this past January, and I want to do a small retaining wall, as well as a patio eventually. Could you possibly do a video, with supplies and building materials from a big box store, so that handy homeowners would know what to buy. Thanks Stan! I enjoy watching all of your videos.

You need packing gravel for a base normally dig down a foot and compact the base. Depending on height you need geo grid . And I like the to glue my blocks .Also things that help are levels and rubber mallet ! You can use string lines as well ! Or orange marking paint to make out your retaining wall pattern then remove the grass .. base is very important

Patio is almost the same thing but stone dust of about 3/4 " use PVC or metal pole with a 2*4 to screed the stove dust as like a bed to set the paver in .. after the base is done and pavers are set . Sweep stone dust on between pavers and put a sheet of plywood on them so when you use the compactor on top it won't shatter the pavers .. water and use a glue for the sand locks it all in ..

You absolutely shouod never glue your Block, as the wall is in a constant state of movement. If you glue it it will not be able to flex properly and force the wall to exert all the pressure at its weakest point. We wouod glue a small/short wall (under 3 ft) that is a flat Block with no lip or pin.

All excellent tips, especially #1 caring enough to do it right. I wonder how long that CMU wall lasted, and if that contractor split town before it failed.

The grid hanging over was the first thing I noticed in the footage 💪 Thanks DIRT MONKEY 🤜🤛

That was excellent knowledge on the 10 year law. Basically while giving a bid you can give a 10 year warranty because of the law.

Stan it's all about the tow slope behind the wall gravity always wins. What people sometimes don't understand it's just a face the compaction is what keeps.the wall standing

@DirtMonkey Hello and thank you for the great and informative videos you have created for years! I'm getting ready to build a retaining wall and have found your advice really helpful. One item that I'm surprised that you don't include is the use of a non-woven geotextile fabric both surrounding the wall base and backfill. I understand geotextile fabric is generally recommended to keep "fines" from contaminating base and backfill which can inhibit or reduce drainage ultimately reducing the integrity of the wall. Is this incorrect or should I consider using geotextile fabric in my retaining wall (clay soil with a water canal 20' away). Thanks in advance!

I wish the retaining wall in the garden of a house we want to buy was build by you guys! Can I get your opinion on this, please? The wall is approx 10ft tall and about 66ft long with 20ft within the property boundary. It holds back neighbouring gardens, houses and garages. The wall looks very wet about 3 rows of the blocks from the ground, all along the wall and the rest of the wall is patchy with damp. Not drying out for months. It was build about seven years ago. Should we stay away from this property or an engineer suggested to drill weep holes. Would it solve the problem? Thanks, your advice would help alot! I love your work and videos! ☆☆☆

I have an old wood one that needs to be replaced and it just sucks because it has to be done and won't raise the house value at all with the amount of money you have to spend on them to get it done right.

Do you not separate your 3/4” clean from your packed backfill? I was shown to separate, is that not needed?

Are you compacting the gravel as well or just the soil?

What about natural, dry stacked lannon stone? In WI w/ drain pipe, gravel. Our 40yr+ fell over. Brought new larger flats in with some laid perpendicular. Is this quality?

It Took you 25 years to figure out you can put a few more layers on, and just flip the grid over when you get to it for the sake of time? Seems like a pretty simple concept to me. I understood that the second i saw what was going on. Definitely not that advanced.
