All of my friends that where renting a skid steer never became A thriving company they were all one hit wonders , no one says everything has to be new ,but you need skid steer ,mini excavator, a good size wood chipper and decent dump truck ,trailer ,used equipment is half price you just have to be thorough, I did lawn maintenance it paid for all of this equipment in five years and then the next 25 years is downhill your reputation is being able to execute immediately after phone call ,you’ll be busy forever don’t let anyone tell you otherwise ! You’ll be working while the other guy is at the rental shop making a reservation for a piece of equipment

I was running a machine exactly like that one, about the same year, for a company and it wouldn't start without a jump, even with a new battery. Cat man showed up with a ground cable, replaced the ground cable and fixed the problem. This machine was practically new and they knew the ground cables were faulty. In my experience this is something Cat is guilty of, knowing of faulty parts but never saying anything, hoping it will not be an issue until it is out of warranty. I have had this problem with them before with my new equipment, and also with new parts for older equipment.

Dito: ha...bought fairly new Daewoo skid steer years ago. Had starting problems. Spent $1200.00 over the course of a yr at different shops. Ground cable looked nice but it was faulty. On a hunch I used tracer wire to ground engine to frame. That 8 yrs ago....stll running good.

I have run into that as well, except they did the repair out of warranty for free. I took machine to them. If they came to machine I would have paid for a service call. They have been outstanding on service exceeding my expectations since 2004. The prices of parts is an issue with a bitter flavor to me as well as their charges to rebuild hydraulic cylinders is outrageous ( by this I mean more than 4 times the price of their competitors).

It's crazy that you made this video right now. For the last month I've been searching all over the country for a used Cat or Bobcat skid steer. On Friday I settled on two different Cats and one Bobcat and haggled down to the best price on all three. All three are 2016's. The Bobcat has 750 hours the Cats are both right under 1000 hours. I've watched auctions, even bid a couple of times, called dealers and called other people. The point is, I've done a ton of research on used skid steers so I am familiar with what you can get out there at what price. You got a pretty good deal considering it is a 259D, a freaking 2018, under 800 hours with enclosed cab and tracks. Looks fully loaded. I too would be a bit disappointed in the damage/scratches and general maintenance of the machine. For a 2018 with that many hours it should be fresher. Considering what I've seen out there (there are plenty of options in this price range for a machine just like that) I probably would have sent it back and searched for another one. However, it's one thing to say that and then have the machine sitting right in front of you and be that close to finishing the deal. You certainly didn't make a bad deal.

I really love my cat 259D bought it new. For me if you are going to use it every day buy it, especially a track loader. Crappy operators just don't clean out the tracks after each day and try run it like a wheeled skid. Rent if you plan on abusing it or do not need it a lot. This machine has a great motor the C3.3 it actually is a Kubota v3307 motor similar to the one in a s-250 or 300. Some things you should know I wish someone told me day one. Put the cat guards over the hoses to final drive motors. If not, turning on a potato sized rocks or concrete can really cause a problem that the track undercarriage needs to come off to fix. With any track loader you want to try your best to turn like your on a dozer and avoid zero turns if possible. Also reduces track guide and undercarriage wear and bringing unassay debris into track system. That electric actuator to attach bucket keep that clean and lubricated and all associated moving parts. I run mine with a 1 yard most of time helps keeps debris from getting behind the bucket. Hope you have good luck with it, I love mine.

​No problem like the vids! Was going to add that leasing to buy is a double edge sword not sure its a good idea for most. I did that once pampered it like I owned it, at the end I did not have the money in the bank at time of lease end and I could not get the credit to buy it out in the end. But could get credit to buy a new one. Recommend buying used/new or renting monthly pay for pick up and drop off . Also is subjective what is normal wear and tear at the end of a lease and fees to fix if they come up with stuff.

Hey Stan..love your videos. I'm Steve from Yarmouth Nova Scotia and have done thousands of hours of snow removal AND dirt work in these 259D machines. The cab comfort is second to none and I do love the pilot controls. Not as quick as the old style Bobcats for doin "tricks" I'll say..but still pretty responsive. Track sag should be about 2 inches ( middle roller measured from bottom with track off ground). I just guess when adjusting myself...but obviously too tight is worse than a lil loose. Your guy said something was missing when looking by the door but wasn't sure what...it's the serrated step that helps with entry and exit. You'll wanna put one if them back on. These machines work VERY well...and like I said..Cab comfort is very hard to beat. The heated air ride seat is straight out of a Cadillac Escalade Lol and with the smooth and easy pilot controls..it's a dream to operate for hours on end. If ya half way look after it..it'll give ya lots if hours trouble free. Only thing I find seems to fail often..is the sensor for auto bucket level ( if equipped ). One more thing....they have an electronic quick connect AND a hydraulic one for releasing buckets) attachments. IF yours is electric.. be aware.. they lock up and click in winter ..and will do it always no matter the temperature if you hold switch Too long either releasing or unlocking the attachment. This is the plastic ( yes. PLASTIC) gears inside the motor stripping. It's a bad design and it's around 600 bucks for a replacement motor and shaft. The Hydraulic one is a FAR better set up. Don't know WHY the other set up even exists.

Hey Stan. I'm a Minnesota guy living In Waukegan just north of Chicago. I just recently started watching your channel. I'm a bit older than you(66) but still going strong and enjoy work every day. We provide many of the same services but i primarily work for a Habitat for Humanity affiliate as their construction manager. We build homes with volunteers in all phases of residential construction. I do the excavating, concrete, carpentry landscaping as well as home design and have a warehouse where we penalize houses.. To put it in simple terms "I was Born to Build" and seems like you are very much the same. With regards to your question regarding buying, leasing or renting. This year I bought a new GEHL RT 215 for tax reasons. IRS 179 deduction that allows me to write off the full value of the equipment this year. This is available until 2023. I have done this once before and wrote off the total value of a used Kobelco ED180 excavator. Everyone's tax situation is different and that will determine the best way to get the equipment they need and use the available tax laws to help reduce the cost of ownership. If you depreciate your equipment to zero it will become profit when you sell it. Have you discussed the benefits of buying used vs new? Radial lift machines vs vertical lift machines? I have seen the wheel vs track video and I have both.

The experience you had in parts at cat is why I own cats from sales to service I have never had an issue. The other night we had one of our machines stolen and couldn’t get into our remote app at 10:00 at night our cat dealer was tracking the machine for us we got the machine back in a few hours after noticing it gone. They have opened up their yard on a Sunday so we could check out some machines for a snow lease. I have never had service remotely close to what they have done for us

I'd argue a 50% traction improvement and a scraping capacity that prior to those tires simply wasn't possible. I then found a guy that builds angle blades in my neck of the woods with an 8 spring 2-5' cutting edges that individually trip. Freakin awesome! Thank you for bringing all these videos and the latest greatest goings on where you're at both professionally and personally. Mostly professionally but the personal side is definitely there. I had a pair of 2018 Cat 299D2 XHP’s I purchased them new in 2018, they each ran right around 340 hours per month doing chore related work, scraping alleyways, pushing feed and a little snow in the winter. I had planned to run them for 16,000 hours to recoup their cost. Didn’t happen! Finally gave up on them each around 3800 hours. I ended up getting a pair of Case 321F wheel loaders instead. Hands down better machines and just as versatile plus tons more operator visibility. Price wise they were ballpark with the Cats even.

However, I totally agree that it is way too beat up and the fact that the oil hasn't been changed tells me all I need to know about how it was maintained...it simply wasn't. That would scare the hell out of me. 750 hours and no oil change, wow. I imagine that skid steer is going to be full of issues over the next couple of years.

I'm a fan of your videos and have actually learned some things from them and we always keep up with all the new videos, but this one I have to finally comment on and disagree with some of the comments you made. I own a trail building business based out of Austin Texas we do jobs all over the United States, I can take our machines from 100ﾟ weather to 0ﾟ within 12 hours and they will start fine run fine batteries have no issues, It hasn't been out of the 20's all week on our project in Missouri and I don't need a block heater for My 2019 Kubota U17 excavator or my 2018 vermeer CTX 100 skid steer. They start right up no issues. Keep in mind all the jobs are various times lines, sometimes a machine will be one a project for months. So I believe it all depends on how the machines taken care of, how often and well is maintenance done and how often is machine used. Ours never sit still so that may be a factor. Just wanted to put in my opinion on it. Keep up the awesome videos.

You can’t go wrong with cat as long as you have a good dealer. My cat dealer here in southeastern PA is great that’s why I have so many cats. The serial number on the side tells me it was probably a rental machine that’s why it’s so beat up. By the way you probably already figured it out but the whole radiator on top lifts up to give you better access to the engine

Buy service and parts manuals, change hydraulic oil and drive motor oil, check antifreeze strength and DCA levels, and change engine oil and filter again at half the recommended interval, cause it looked like it had never been changed and adjust those tracks. Sounds pretty solid otherwise. Good luck.

Yes, buying leasing,video. i'd change the hydraulic fluid,check all the idler wheels, also the hydraulic filter. When was the last time it was greased?My guess is that they ran the crap out of it and did not care. Air filter?Radiator cleaning final drive oil has never been changed..Best of luck.Ken

100% the reason I run all CAT equipment, I've literally NEVER not been able to get a part i need right away or within 24 hours. Not to mention my local dealer and local reps are fantastic to deal with. 12:25 is a step grate As for the dirt in the bottom, if you lift the cab (remove the two bolts on the front) it makes it extremely easy to clean all of the dirt out of the belly. I do mine every few months (depending on the jobs we've done). She's a little rough around the edges but sounds solid. Tracks definitely need to be adjusted.

Right (New Track) looks & sounds loose. With how bad the engine compartment & oil where, makes me "a bit Leary" if ANY PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE was ever done... Greasing is my MAIN CONCERN! Especially if the Track Tensioners haven't been charged with the proper grease. I used to use a couple Toro Dingo (20 &25hp) that I was hired as the Mechanic, sadly my Boss never allowed enough time for proper repairs, until I was hired! What a CHORE! Great machines though! Yes,.. I have the same 259D for my fence company, rubber tracks tend to wear out fast when used on asphalt or cement, you can also adjust the tracks by pumping some more grease in the grease sert .. congrats on a good buy, it’s a wonderful work horse..

I just picked up what amounts to a new old stock (11 hours) 1-yard underground loader for $9k yesterday, and a beat-up older one with a seized engine for $4k. On the open market, everything is worth around $60-70k; it cost me $16.5k. It's definitely going on my channel.

I bought a used cat 257b in 2004. It has over 8000hrs. It’s paid itself off and profited me millions. We do concrete so it’s not used as intensely but is a great machine. If your going to buy used get pre emissions.

I found warranties were more expensive in long run, make a account rust for repairs and draw interest on the money as you still pay for then get some money back with a warranty. Yeah I would like to hear your version of cost wise of owning, renting or lease. It seems to vary state by state. As far as scratches, paint won't pull the plow and chrome won't get you home.

I’m also from MS and our company runs 7 cat skid steers. 3 262 (wheel loaders) 3 279 (track loaders) & 1 246 (wheel loader). Ours get run super hard and we’ve never had any trouble. I wouldn’t want to run anything else. Machine is rough around the edges, but they will take a beating. I would suggest tightening the tracks though.

Cat recommends several different fluids. 0w-40 crankcase oil is good from -40 to 104 Fahrenheit.

Former Cat tech here. First off that was previously a rental machine. All dealers spray paint the machine i.d's for their rental units like that so I guarantee it's been used and abused. Secondly you should have gotten oil samples and the sample history for the machine. The dead battery is common especially if it sits for any length of time. You also want to keep a spare fuel lift pump with you. A very common failure and will stall it out if it fails. It's also fused in the cab. If you don't hear the rattling/clicking noise when you go key switch on, check the fuse then check for power at the pump. They're trash. Other then that, pop the cab, 15/16th socket and wrench inspect underneath, tighten the tracks up and little and run the hell out of it. Other then a few dumb quirks they're decent machines.

I usually go with a lease if I can't afford the payment on new. On used equipment your monthly payment is usually more than leasing, or buying new. Higher interest rates with less months. I look at the size of my monthly operating cost in case things go sour or long winter months. If I can buy or lease a new machine with a warranty for a less monthly cost over buying a possible piece of crap that cost me down time, repair cost, and more per month for payments, I will go new. If you have cash that is a different story, but down time and repair cost still is a factor.

Stan this is exactly why i am no longer a cat owner .Used to have a 249d just about same machine as that and nothing but trouble.That suspension is a big money pit too when u get over 2500 hours.Maintainance also take 5 times longer than bobcats .Look at the pain in the butt just to change the oil

The machine will idle up automatically. However it will low idle if you switch the park brake off. And even at idle the machine should be charging. In the cab there is a display and it should have a charging number on it. The number should read between 12.6 to 14 volts.

I think changing the oil was a super smart move. That machine worked in super moist and humid conditions down south. The last thing you want is to start that up with all that junk frozen in the crank case. And the synthetic is a great idea in your super cold up there. spending that cash to get it running with out damaging it I beleive was the right move. Why tempt fate

We run the Cat 259 and the 299xhp at the Ohio Department of Transportation, we use the 299 for our fecon head,great machine,only complaint on both of them is we have alot of track issues because of all the side slopes we run them on.

That number doesnt imply a rental. "FTL15257" is not a rental number, it is the serial number of the machine. Dealerships often place the serial number in a convenient location. This makes it much easier to find (when your lot has 50 machines for example), and it makes it easier for techs to look up information.

You WON'T be disappointed with this machine.. That 259d is like an old friend to me, I couldn't guess the hours I've spent in one.. This thing will dig in and give you power at critical times when other comparables would stall and leave ya hanging.. You'll find this out with a full load of heavy clay on a steep incline.. The quick-attach auto coupler system is efficient and reliable. The 'Rabbit' mode (left-hand trigger) will get you across large job sites or through repetitive material handling without wasting time.. The only slight downfall, as it is with many skid steers in that range, is having enough height to get over the edge of a bobtail for loading out material.. Easily fixable by pushing up a quick pad.. I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on it after owning it for a while.. I certainly can't imagine why you wouldn't be happy with it..

It’s prob just rice paddy mud the environment down here is a lot different from up north. With that said rice paddy mud is often 14-18 inches thick

@@BlackHawkBallistic Hell I live in Kentucky and we bought a real old one, A gehl I think. Not sure what size or anything. Cheap old that works. But two weeks after we bought it, I had to use it to move a jet sky to the river because we was flooded in . Went to just river front to an island in just a two days. Anyways got it stuck in the mud for about an hour or so. Thing has mud all thru it. Didn't hurt it just muddy. Got a 4x4 truck stuck first 🤣🤣🤣. Fun times

Tracks do look lose. A step is missing below the door. That oil looked real bad, take it to Cat and have an oil analysis done. make sure the anti freeze is good to -30 F. When you change the tracks get 4 pieces of Sch 40 1-1/2" steel pipe about 10" long in front of the front idler wheel , loosen the track adjuster, jack up one side of the machine and put the pipes between the lugs on the lower section of track, ever other lug. Walk it around the front idler so it lifts it over the triple FLANGES, then pull it off. I use a strap and a mini excavator. Do in reverse when reinstalling the track. It has the forestry package which includes the triple flange undercarriage along with the plastic door rather than glass. Change the gear oil in the planetarys also, look in the operational manual for what to use. My 289D uses synthetic gear oil, not TDTO

The cost new.... minus the cost used, leaves "an amount" to spend repairing the damage/wear and tare. Always the dilemma is how much abused has the machine suffered..... ? yeah. prolly change oil pretty quick and then at half intervals for 3 changes, and then go full interval after that. engines run $7k installed for reman around here.. oils cheap, and filters

Even my Cat dealer told me it is a horrible idea to buy skid steers new. They are like cars in that regard, they depreciate a ton in the first 2 to 3 years. Way better to find a gently used 3 year old version and save yourself the $15,000 to $20,000.

Hey I will tell you one thing. Run it more then an hour at a time, and always keep the machine more then half idle. Saves you from regerating the dpf or clogging it. Also I would hope they would have all the parts. That is Ziegler’s headquarters

40 sight unseen, not bad. I would've offered 35 but it's hard to tell when you're buying online from photos. If that price includes delivery... maybe $37,500. Being a frozen chosen Canadian I run nothing but 5w40 synthetic in everything I own sounds like you do something similar. The machine sounds great! Based on what you discovered in the oil change I would probably want to change the hydraulic oil as well. I use 32 weight hydraulic oil but where I live it get's life threateningly cold. -52 degrees Celsius a couple weeks ago. We're out of that now, Thank God!! I'm guessing your probably running 46 weight. Solid machine. 2 speed. Love it! Even at 40. Every buddy of mine that owns Cat skid-steer's in that size range has issues with the rubber gaskets on the front window. It's the only thing on those machines I don't like.

New battery, no start, no surprise. Turn lights on for thirty seconds to wake up the battery. Sounds good though. That hydraulic connector probably bent back with a sweeper attachment when they lifted to high with the bucket tilted back. Good deal and parts always close by.

Personally, I never buy something used unless I get such a great deal that I can afford the absolute worst case scenario. I have seen way too many people abuse trucks and equipment. Granted, they are people that genuinely care for their equipment. There are just too many people who don't give a crap.
