I picked up a Technics SL 1800Mk2 last month for $300. It came with the Stanton 681EEE-S Stereohedron cartridge, I am very impressed with this cartridge. It tracks very light .75 to 1.5 grams. @@TheAgeOfAnalog From what I've read it basically has the dimensions of a shibata, but I do know they can't properly call it a shibata since it's patented. I'd do a bit of research about it, but still, I think it's the closest modern replacement to the original
@stevengagnon47775 ай бұрын
@@TheAgeOfAnalog the vivid line is like the micro line it is not a shibata. Neither is the Steriohedron the same as a Shibata. I think the LP Tunes hypereliptical is closer to the Steriohedron. The Steriohedron won't extend out to 50 kilohertz to play discreet quadrophonic like a Shibata. I am using the bonded hypereliptical now it was good enough so I bought a bunch more. Seeing a picture of the vivid line I would say it's similar to the hypereliptical and Steriohedron . My guess is they are close variants of the same basic design.

Last time I checked, they’re also the North American distributors of JICO replacement styli as well. Hope that’s of some help, and good luck. 🔊😊🎶 Edit: The issue I’ve run into with vintage styli is that the suspension is often dried up, a problem I’m sure you’re likely familiar with.

Just picked up a pair of SL1210MK2s and one of them had a pretty clean looking 680EL cart installed. I'm not so sure I want to try and play any records with the stylus as it was a bit dirty and I'd rather start clean. I'm also not sure if it's an original stylus because there is no "Stanton" vertical lettering lettering on the left side of the white plastic. The other side does read D6800AL (been doing some research including watching this video, I'm very confused as to the difference between the D6800AL & the D6800EL). I was simply going to list it for sale, but after some research now I'm a bit curious to hang on to it and see how it sounds. I'm used to an AT440MLb for ripping/playback purposes, and I've picked up a few Shure M44Gs with original styli for DJ purposes which I've yet to try. Seems that today, replacement styli for many carts are hard to come by aside from perhaps JICO which are quite expensive. 9 months since this video, have you learned anything more about the cartridge/styli?

Just a couple of observations regarding the D680s. The cartridge body is the same - just the stylus is different. The D680 has a very high inductance at 930mH. This gives the high output and shouldn't cause any problems with your pre-amp (or mixer), but check. One thing not shown in the booklet shown here is compliance. The AL stylus is 10, whereas the EL is 13.5. These are very low (a result of the strong cantilever). This means its important to keep the effective mass as high as possible. With a Technics SL1200 tonearm mass of 12g, you should use the additional 3g spacer to add to the D680s 5.5g. This will bring the resonant frequency just inside the acceptable range of 8-11 Hz. Anyway, I agree. My D680ALs sound stunning on my SL-1200MK2s
@EzeeLinux Жыл бұрын
I did not use tan extra weight but the Flaunce headstall is 10 grams by itself and thus far the sound has been nothing but stunning. The pre-amp in my Sony amp seems to like this cart, as well. :)

I have now received an EL from the USA. If you've wanted to own a 680EL and were worried about finding a decent one, here's my story. I found one for less than 40 dollars which looked very well used and covered in grime and corrosion. I expected to have to replace the stylus. But I soaked it in hot soapy water, picked off the dirt with a pin under a magnifying glass, then soaked it in descaling solution. It came out sparkling clean. Then rinsed it with deionized water, dried it and tried it. Guess what? Stunning! The balance and drive of the sound beats my ALs. So glad I took a gamble on it.

I own a Stanton 600 with an NOS 600ee stylus. I am not sure how this cartridge sound wise compares to the 680 EL, but to my ears, the 600 is an excellent sounding cartridge. Recently, I was comparing the Stanton 600 that was on BIC 960 against a Shure V15 IV which was on a Thorens TD 160. The Stanton had better smoothness right before it gets too bright on the top end, overall nice balance in the mid range and more clarity and detail in the lower end. The Shure had more mid range and bass fullness. Overall, I preferred the Stanton and BIC 960 combo which was a bit shocking. I do feel that this is a fair comparison as most people would view the BIC as an inferior TT to Thorens.

I thought it sounded ok, but never really knew what VTF to use, so I ended up just putting it away. Fast forward to a few years ago, when I got back into vinyl, and I pulled the original stylus out of the box and checked it under a digital microscope. OMG was that thing filthy! Globs of gunk stick to the cantilever and diamond. So, I cleaned it up, put it back on, set the VTF to 3g, and WOW. I’d say it’s probably the second best sounding cart of the dozen or so I know own. @@slistone1940 my Technics SL-7 close"n"play linear tracking turntable has a Stanton L747S cartridge installed on it now. It is the 681in a p-mount with a nude Steriohedron. I'm keeping that one for a reference as those are pretty pricey and used , fortunately the p-mount doesn't have a high demand and I git lucky and got it in fairly new condition. The stylus that I'm using daily is a replacement for the 680EES. It is an hypereliptical replacement stylus from Lp tunes and was $80 plus $9for shipping. I had a Stanton 680ee stylus that I was using and the Lp tunes bonded hypereliptical 680EES sounds better so I was due for a replacement. For my use it is good enough so I bought 5 more so I don't run out. The Stanton nude Steriohedron does sound best as they always did. I had a Stanton 680 EL II that I bought when Stanton stopped making the Steriohedron. Those do sound very nice. I think it's because it tracks heavy at 3.0 grams ( that was my ideal minimum) and the 0.4×0.7 elliptical had a good contact area with a slightly higher output. The 1200 mkIi is happy running at high tracking force too. So I will be looking for a good direct replacement eventually when I get my SL- 1200 mkII up and running. The Lp tunes was specked for 1.0 to 1.5 grams which is the range for the SL-7. I'm using the brush so I found an additional 0.5 grams is better. Lp tunes couldn't disclose the manufacturer for it but my guess is that it was made in Japan. Stanton got all their stylus tips from Japan in the past. I would try a Jico stylus but they are pricier and the nude mounted ones are more than double what I spent. The AL stylus you mentioned is a heavy tracking spherical it will work and DJs used them because they are better for back scratching. I'd stick with the Japanese made ones. My experience with the Swiss made ones wasn't good and they all had a magnet at the end of the cantilever instead of the iron piece that Stanton used for the 680/681 series. That increased the output collapsed the sound stage slightly and had a heavy bass. I listen to a wide range of music si the sound stage and flat response is important for me.
@stevengagnon47775 ай бұрын
I do have experience with many of the different styli available ( previously available) . I did like the EL II when I couldn't get the nude Steriohedron for the 681. The 0.4×0.7 at 3.0 grams of tracking force is good. The AL is 0.7 spherical that is heavy tracking like the EL. My favorite was the Steriohedron for the 681. The Steriohedron is a line contact version the hugged the groove well. I'm currently using the Stanton L747S ( Basically a p-mount 681) cartridge on my Technics SL-7 it has a nude Steriohedron. It is my reference so it's not getting used daily. I have bonded hypereliptical ( the hypereliptical and vivid line should be close to the Steriohedron ) aftermarket from Lp tunes($80) that was sold as a replacement for the 680EES (bonded Steriohedron) . It comes close enough tracking at 2.0 grams to the Stanton Steriohedron tracking at 1.5 grams that I not having a great urge to use the Stanton original. The Lp tunes seems to be at 2.0 grams than it was at 1.5 grams . That is 0.5 grams more than listed on the box it came in. Going with my ears on this one. I will be giving this a try with my Technics SL-D2 with an S-shaped tone arm like the Sl-1200 . I suspect it will be at 2.0 grams too . I prefer a heavier tracking stylus with the S- tone arm anyway as the mass of the tonearm is more fitting with the highertrackingforce. I will likely try the Lp tunes replacement for the EL in the future. Anyway I was pleased enough with the bonded hypereliptical from Lp tunes that I ordered 5 more. I have a SL-1200 mkII that I need to repair fortunately its mechanical, unfortunately the bearing in the tone arm appears to be not available. I will need to be creative because I won't be putting a new tone arm in. I would stick to the aftermarket from Japan 🇯🇵 . My experience with the Swiss made ones hasn't been good.

If you like your LP's to sound like your cassette deck then this is the cartridge for you. The cheapest Audio Technicas can go to 20Hz - 20Khz. These DJ Stantons sound like garbage when used on audiophile equipment, but they were not meant for home use they were designed for DJs for a reason because they are limited in the 20-20,000Hz ranges. I know they are ignorance that claim it doesn't matter because he can't hear 20Khz. It's the blending of that 20Khz throughout the entire audio spectrum that makes the difference this is why $10,000 carts can produce up to 50-60Khz because it's this overall sound that gives musics it's dynamics. Stop trying to relive your younger years and get a good cartridge and you my find yourself surprised at how terrible that Stanton really is ..

I've been an audiophile and tech for years, and there is nothing to what you're saying on the bass side of things. Harmonics in US range shouldn't affect the ones in the audible range ANY more than when they were recorded. You're saying that a audio is different without these frequencies, yet there are no current records pressed with that high or low FR. i almost think that you are confusing. Frequency response of vinyl to the sampling rate of digital... because lower sampling rates would most certainly effect and phase certain high frequency characteristics, even causing some false harmonic content.. .But once again, they wouldn't even touch the lows.
