i loved this part. It was very well delivered. At first he was kinda funny, he started as the chill TO. after their first disagreement, he kinda stands up for his point, and you almost get the doubt that his racism is a red herring and that he might just have noticed something with his gang-related experience, but then it quickly becomes evident that he's biased and prone to profiling. After that, he is pretty much marked as the villain, but as a last ditch effort, he tries to humanize himself, and you almost feel pity because he HAS a family he has to provide for and he genuinely needs to be educated to a better work ethic, and not just discarded. When i saw him scared like that, i almost thought his next arc could've been just Jackson straightening him out actually. And then it hit me. That scene of him luring Jackson into a beating was very hard to watch. The show often tries to humanize felons and offenders, and sometimes even give them some chance at redemption, so i was kinda lulled into thinking this could've been just another instance of that. Instead he just goes from misguided ignorant racist cop to full villain. And later we discover that he thought he did nothing wrong and even got himself reinstated. He slander jackson and tailors himself a nice story where he's the hero and the bad rookie is the actual villain. Stanton's story is full of emotion (mostly hate) and Routh is AMAZING at playing that

It's perfectly legitimate to use the incident as a training video. The purpose is to stop other officers from being hurt. In fact, it would be expected for fellow police officers to watch and discuss the incident to look at ways of reducing the risk of injury and the importance of having your partner's back.

I want to shine the light on actor Titus Makin Jr. who plays officer West. He advocated for the storyline to reflect current issues in Real Life with people of color and officers. He told writer and director he did not feel comfortable playing a character if the story line did not reflect real issues. He had a key role not just as an actor but having this storyline play out. In addition, he portrayed the role so well, it hurt to see the character die. :(

Except in that show, it doesn't feel forced. That series tackled a character wrongfully accused on sexual assault and how the entire world automatically took accusation as the truth, especially if the woman is in a position of power. It is a real world thing that happens. But the difference is his justice happened in a fantasy setting where he gets justice. Season 3 of this show focused on how people WANT the police to act to take down a racist cop and because of the real world setting, it feels MORE of a fantasy than the show that takes place IN a fantasy.

Cops being racist or even criminal isnt the thing the cop community hates. It's not protecting their own. For good or for bad, they will usually will defend each other. Exposing the racist cop this way is honestly the most devastating thing you could do to his career as a cop. Now if he is being racist or violent, the cop community won't even try to defend him. Because they know he woundnt to the same.

What could Stanton sue Jackson or the LAPD for? Defamtaion? You can only sue a person for defamation if the statement or publication was false. For that, Stanton would need to prove that the video was fake or false. Also, it wasn't Jackson himself who published the video but rather it was his commanding officer herself who published it by showing it to the other officers. I used to work in research and publishing before going into social services. We got sued for defamation by some angry person or organization simply because we agreed to published a book that they didn't like and almost everytime, that case was dropped because they can't prove that what we said about them was false.

Any actor or actress who has to portray a racist or other kind of degrading individual has REALLY hard job to do! So you have to give a lot of respect to these people that have to play "bad apple" characters. I'm sure there is a certain amount of fun to it for the entertainment value, but it can be emotionally & physically taxing to the actor knowing the viewing community is going to hate your character.

If you take for example a long-running show like Criminal Minds, 99% of all the criminals in it are C-list actors.

At the end Stanton won. Jackson is dead, he is still a cop , and the reason he didn’t get fired other than the lawsuit is because some people from the upper brass probably sympathize with his way of thinking.

Debatable. Stanton's reputation among his fellow officers is ruined in this scene. The word will spread that he left a fellow officer to die on patrol, and it's almost certain that he'll never again be viewed as trustworthy. Jackson may not have succeeded in having Stanton kicked off the police force, but he effectively killed Stanton's career in every way that mattered to Stanton himself.

The hallmark of great story telling is that they get the message that they want to get across. I’m going to play a little devils advocate here (no I don’t actually feel this way but for the sake of social science I want to entertain an alternative perspective) Stanton was not a bad cop. He was a little racist granted but he was observant and always trying to teach his trainee something. His past experiences made him a little racist and paranoid but he still had a perspective worth passing onto the force like when he was explaining that black kids gang tattoos and West thought he was just being racist towards a kid but he was being honest. He was showing west to look past someone circumstances and demeanor and look for things that don’t add up. Not saying you need to use it but definitely make a note while investigating incase it becomes relevant. I haven’t seen the episode in forever but I believe he didn’t rush to help West when he got jumped because West just threatened his career not 2 minutes before that. I’m not saying it’s right because it wasn’t it was unforgivable but are we going to act like when you threaten someone’s career they aren’t going to feel a certain way about it. And finally I don’t think he deserved this treatment. Yes he did something unforgivable he left his partner to fend for themselves but he appealed the termination by all rights he should have a clean slate when he returns to work he was sent to a different division and they went out of their way to witch hunt him. This video just causes mistrust and a toxic environment for his new division that he was entitled to a fresh start at. Granted he was demoted too. One of the pillars of the justice system is rehabilitation if we can believe that rapist and murderers can turn over a new leaf and become better people. They why can’t we believe that a cop that made a mistake was punished, fights for his job back and comes back demoted cant try to be better. I’m not defending what he did I’m just saying if you’re going to give the guy a chance to come back then give them a fair chance.
