The thing I love about Stanton is that his grooves aren't too technically challenging, while some of them require a deal of coordination, it's all about groovin' which is something a lot of drummers have lost these days!

Thanks a lot for your comment Steve (i asked him in his channel to check this video to see if he could figure the damn thing)....after all the answers i guess that Stanton is not just doing any tipical rudimental thing that you could find in any book, right? he is putting all his experience, knowledge to create something else. The "secret", for me, to understand why it sounds so much like a polyrythm seem to be this "he tricky part is he doesn't start on the downbeat". A lot of great feedback!!

I agree with a few drummers here that his skills aren't exceptional. Countless other drummers could pull these grooves off...but the dude has passion, he has found a niche and is exploiting it , is displaying for all to see that drums are so much more than a 4 on the floor, and he has a nice drum kit

But, I'm still learning! Stanton is one of the few guys that I know of (not in a jazz context) that mics his non-ported Bass drum head live. I wonder what he does to eliminate bleed from ambient/stage noise and cymbal bleed. Hmm

Stanton has a tremendous feel and great command of what he plays. It's like Bill Stewart but with actual power. The phrase at 2:40 sounds to my ear like he's not playing the double stroke after the flam so I'm not hearing it as a blushda. It sounds like left-handed flam that's real open and sloppy with the right hand on the cowbell and left-hand either on the snare or tom - followed by a single left on the snare. Flam- tap flam-tap - but the tricky part is he doesn't start on the downbeat,

You're probably right, although I'd have to disagree with you there (about the 'no way to get that full of a sound' part) In my experience, the beefiest, most fat and huge bass drum sound I've gotten have been on drums that were 1. Not ported (mic-hole) 2. Mic-ed from the outside. The only advantage to mic-ing the inside of any drum is to isolate the signal from cymbal bleed etc into the mic and for more attack. I personally think the best results are achieved with both techniques implemented.

nice thaks a lot! i checked the blushda thing...it seems that there are both ternary and binary version right?...being the ternary the original, and the binary a variation. Anyhow....i think i hear, from almost 2:42 to the crash ending, 3 groups of 4...at least i can count...1,2,3,4 three times during that passage wich seem to fit the accents more than counting 4 times grous of 3. I recognize my ignorance, i'm just sharing my thoughts here and willing to learn from those who knows more than my.

They're probably internal mic'd I was thinking the same thing. I doesn't look like that batter heads are mic'd and even if they were there'd be no way to get that full of a sound. So IMO it's probably internal.

im 51 all you had to choose from in the olden days ... wait where am i... oh yeah here i am, sorry, all we had was zildgen. they were ok but now the cybals are varried and have different sounds. love meinls and bosphorus and soultone all great cymbals. cheers

To his left is the Bosphorus Groove Trash Crash 20", to his right Bosphorus Groove Pang Thang. He then moved to Crescent cymbals, same set though. Now his signature cymbals are made by Sabian, since they bought Crescent.

He's a really great player, obviously skilled in that nola syncopation funk. His playing is infectiously joyful. But I do find him hammy at times. I'm also not crazy about his tuning. If you dig Moore, dig deeper and find Shannon Powell...and Johnny Vidacovich.

Few years ago here in Asheville Stanton's band came thru. I enjoyed the show, fantastic. But afterwards, he was meeting "fans" and proceeded to literally grope a young woman. He was off to the side of things and maybe thought he was out of site. I was waiting to meet him. He was pulling her in close and his hands were all aggressive on her ass and it was just totally cringe & creepy! She pulled away. It was obvious what he was trying to do. Dude was even wearing his wedding ring. I don't listen to his stuff anymore.
