Aaaw, your Stapelias look so healthy and beautiful. The lifesaver plant is my favourite. I had neglected my Stapelia grandiflora and have repotted it earlier this year. I was lucky and it's doing fine now. :) I was advised not to let it sit in water, but it seems to depend on the environment wether or not it leads to rot. Thanks for sharing and happy growing! :)
@PlantzNThings8 жыл бұрын
I would love to see your stapelia group... and you're right... it really depends on the growing conditions for watering. in the winter they are kept very dry... in the crazy heat of our summer they are watered very often.

Love the structure of these plants. They look so healthy and the flowers are so interesting.The plants behind you in the video look amazing too given how hot and dry it's been in our area this year.

I need to get you some cuttings to try growing in your new windows :) they are fun to grow :) and some of the garden plants are doing ok... it's too hot for many things.. we water like crazy... certainly not the same as a good rain as you know

I love the Stapelia plants. Just have my Stapelia Gigantea in flower at the moment. I have a S. Bell which flowers every year with many brown flowers. Sometimes plants like tight flower pots, especially the Hoya's. Nice flowers you have. Huernia Zebrina is the H. life saver flower I think.

Thanks for sharing, Bill! They are all lovely. I didn't know the big stapelia can produce such large blooms. I hope it will bloom for you soon. The lifesaver plant is the cutest thing, and the blooms are beautiful! Do all of these make stinky blooms? They look so fantastic!
@PlantzNThings8 жыл бұрын
They are pollinated by flies so yes they all have an icky smell but not always strong. I can't smell the ones I have... maybe the bigger blooms will have a bigger smell
@orchidsadutchy49408 жыл бұрын
PlantzNThings I wish I could grow something like these, but I'm sure my husband would hate the idea. (because of the smell)
@omietopi8 жыл бұрын
+Orchids & a Dutchy I agree, these plants and their flowers look awesome but I feel just like your husband. I can't imagine to grow plants that have stinky blooms. That's why I've never bought a Bulbophyllum either.
@orchidsadutchy49408 жыл бұрын
Bettina I guess if we lived in a house with a garden, I could take a blooming plant to a corner far away at the backyard, but in an apartment, I wouldn't enjoy the smell, nor the flies, because stapelias are very efficient at attracting flies. I like the blooms, but I can't have this plant. Same thing with some beautiful but stinky bulbophyllums. Maybe if I had a terrarium and could keep them inside it, such that we wouldn't feel the smell.

+Orchids & a Dutchy 😊 You're right. At the same time, I'm quite happy that there're at least a few orchids I can resist😉. I'm really getting out of space. 😂 Have nice evening

If I recall, you're formally educated "in plants," but if you've got any good orchid or hort books, please make a video about them. I think not enough people realize that they should be reading a book or two. You can't learn everything you need to on the internet because you don't know what to look for. (Example: if you don't know that orchids need pure water, you'll never know to look for it and assume you've got root rot issues) - that happened to me using 360ppm tap water 10 years ago. Got a second book looking for the answer and found it. You have way more subscribers than me, so you've got a bigger voice. Can help more people.

Do you water Stapelia when they are just on the border between dry and humid, or are you waiting for an extra day or two after that? And do you water with a lesser amount when they are at that stage and then water more often since since use up the water faster then - or is it better to water so the water goes through the soil and then make sure to remove extra water so the roots do not rott? Also in it's sappling stage (after growing roots) - do you keep the soil moist for the first few weeks, or should it still dry up between waterings before adding more water? Also how much perlite do you use for these?
@cojovi798 жыл бұрын
That lifesaver bloom is awesome! What kind of conditions does it need?
@PlantzNThings8 жыл бұрын
That plant is really fun to grow... it will tolerate a variety of conditions but it prefers high light warm temps and moderate watering... in the winter I have it under grow lights with my other plants... it survives but doesn't thrive and bloom... the blooms happen with higher light.

Bill....what ever happened to your Medinilla Magnifica? I haven't heard about it in a while and am curious about how it's doing. I bought one, almost killed it and am still trying to get it right!
@PlantzNThings8 жыл бұрын
I actually got rid of it... they can be a lot of work to keep looking good... I unfortunately have a revolving door of plants because of this channel and my medinilla unfortunately didn't make the cut... it flowered religiously but the leaves never looked perfect... mostly my fault.... in time I will get more... My friend grows them commercially so I have access to beautiful ones at any time... One day I will make a care video at the greenhouse but I have not had the time...

I just bought a Phalaenopsis Orchid from the Grocery Store, and I was wondering when is the best time to repot it?
@PlantzNThings8 жыл бұрын
The best time to repot is once flowering has finished.. but I have noticed that Phals are more forgiving if repotting is needed when I spike.
