In the old rules, before the official book, the author included a section that said "like x" and included the miniatures or pop culture idea that inspired each faction. If you can dig an old version up, it's a nice reference.

I have so many models I want to use.... Infinity & Aristeia!, Star Wars of course, Kill Team obviously, Breachstorm as probably Path models or Legions of Men, Deadzone Cultists and Hive.. I want to convert Bolt Action models... I want to take Age of Sigmar models and sci-fi them up... everything I see looks like a Star Breach force to me!

I love how GW was so obsessed with being proprietary that they had to go to measures that basically leave their factions wide open to be used in other games :D

Thanks for this! i just discovered the game today and I'm pretty excited to get some teams going. The board game route is really good advice. any sci fi dungeon crawl could have many that fit the bill. I think between Siege of the Citadel and Abaddon I have a plenty of minis for at least 3 or 4 factions. plus I have a perhaps a few too many Orks and Space marines collecting dust that need to see some action.

I'd say the only real 'problem' is that there is no real unified scale for miniatures within the industry and especially for fictional/non-historical minis. ie : a 28mm mini from company A is going to look like a giant next to a 28mm mini from company B (that's without even considering the vagueness of 'heroic' scale definition) This can be used to your advantage if you want a faction to be bigger compared to others, but it does involve careful planning and access to reference material.
