Hi Mike, I have a IAB 1859 civilian target model, it is marked .54 cal. but really is .562 caliber, the .54 bullets just rattle down the bore. At one hundred yards it is very accurate, and I have a great time impressing friends on the capabilities of these old guns. It does take time to make the cartridges, but that is part of the fun in shooting these oldies guns. Looking back at these old black powder guns that I have had through the years brings back fond memories. The 1860's and 1851 were a blast to shoot, but sadly way back then I did not know about the paper cartridge routine. Thank you for taking the time to post this video, and look forward to your other videos. I am an avid fan of these videos. Fred Ford

Mike: I need to thank you. I just bought a new Uberti 1860 Army and I was having trouble getting it ready for Prime Time Live. The last challenge I have to over come was hammer blow back. The SlixShot nipples stopped the blow back, but I then had troubles with ignition. I was watching your video, "Light springs in an 1851 Navy revolver". There I found the answer. My main spring was weak. Thank you Jody

I recently purchased the star&bullock cartridge kit for .36 and .44 revolver. I like the kit a lot and those guys give excellent customer service. It’s fun to use the kit and it produces excellent cartridges. I use the lee conical in the .44 and it’s sort of difficult to seat in the paper cartridge but it works. It’s really designed for the Johnson&Dow and I don’t have that mold. I recommend the star&bullock highly.

Fantastic video Mike. For the size of the charge, you can control with how full you fill the dipper. It isn't sensitive to chamber length if you use dip lube on the front, because you squish the lube to exactly the breech face. For the Pedersoli chambers, you don't have to make a template. You can just extend the paper beyond the end of the pin a little bit when you cut the paper, just like you would with roundballs on the revolver kits. That may have been edited out of the video. I think your issue with having to hold the tops is due to the liquid glue. With the glue stick it's pretty easy to put a crease so that they are tight. And it is so much easier to put the bullet in.

Since I don't mold my own bullets I use the Sharps "Christmas tree" type bullets. With that being said, I have enough room in my chamber for a little over 100 grains of 2F powder. I use filler as well. I would like to see how you load for the Christmas tree type bullets.

You could have some lengths of string handy to tie around the cartridge mouth in a half knot. That way, the string holds it while the glue dries, and you can set it to the side and move on to the next one. Not sure if it'll work for you, but it's a idea.

Thanks for all you do Mike. I'm putting a frankensharps together right now. I picked up a bunch of random parts a guy collected. Pedersoli barrel, Garrett action, IAB replacement stock, Chiappa rear sight and other parts. I bought that bullet mold to. I'm afraid I'm going to need a little filler around where I'm trying to make a IAB replacement stock fit the Garret. I'm down to removing all the extra wood now. I got the barrel timed to the action and all machined. I really do enjoy your videos and your honesty in the way you make them.

Another great video as always, Mike; thank you for sharing. It's funny--I only got into cap and ball shooting about 5 or 6 years ago, and at that time there were almost no formers available except Cliff Manley's version (and they were hard to get). Now there are so many it's hard to choose, and they cover almost every caliber.

I've really pined after maybe owning a sharps reproduction. Handling them several times while in Gettysburg I always felt they were really a state of the art carbine for their time they are mechanically fascinating beautiful really as far as guns go. Lately I've had the pull to own an uberti 1851 navy repro likewise I'm fascinated by the life of JBH I'd really like to get acquainted with the gun that's synonymous with this figure that and theres an unused .36 ball mold sitting amongst my casting stuff.

Any thoughts on adding an inner-liner? Form the cartridge walls and base but have one or two slightly smaller diameter cartridge walls, insert them and you get increased side-wall rigidity and takes up the space you are using inert filler for.

I once heard a story about a man who was rudely awakened by his chickens squaking in his hen house. We our friend grabbed his shot gun and went to the hen house bare foot and wearing only his union suit underwear. One of the buttons holding the trap door missing. As he was creeping into the hen house looking for a weasel to shoot, he old hound dog cold nosed him on his buttock cheek,and our friend killed 12 of his best laying hens. That said, are these the type of loads used by Berdans Sharp shooters during the Civil War?

I figure your the head of the creek when it comes to black powder. I have a new 1858 Remington and when I cock it slow it lock up in place just fine, but when I do it faster the cylinder has to be turned back a quarter of a inch to lock up or go on to the next hole. Any ideas how to fix that or what is wrong.

This system seems to be a fail! If you have to modify the length, reduce the diameter of the former, and make the paper cases a different length you may as well make the whole thing in the first place, it also looks very dangerous having a "cartridge" that leaves a 1/4" air gap when loaded! Stay safe !

@duelist1954
@duelist1954 3 жыл бұрын
.44-40… the .38-40 is a little flatter shooting, but at 1873 ranges that is a purely academic point. .44-40 would have had the best ammo availability.

@@scurrey8489 in a .36 cartridge, a wad takes up valuable powder space. Also, in hot weather the lube will migrate. Contaminating the powder, and weakening the paper tube. This video comes a day after I returned my Armi Sport Sharps 1859 to the gun shop, it looked very pretty but someone messed it up badly. But all is not lost, I came home today, after a number of trades, with an Uberti/Winchester Model 1873 in .45 Colt. Very lightly used, possibly unfired. I really liked the Sharps, but the 1873 isn't chopped liver.
