Fun fact One of the requirements to join the British army during the hay day of paper cartridges was that you had to have at least two teeth that met in your mouth for biting the tail off of the cartridge and yes I will admit that biting off the tail of a paper cartridge is in fact one of the funner parts of shooting a flintlock.

Another great video Santee! The paper cartridges sure speed up the loading process but they can be a little tricky to make. There's a trick to using the papers in the kit for sanitary reasons, sort of like the TP packaged in an MRE kit. Congratulations on 100K!!!!!

100k-Great, sure next 100k will come soon. To topic: Saw a reference, that vast majority of firearms used in Civil War were loaded by paper cartridges. They cited up to 70% with millions purchase. The companies that provided those paper cartridges often use children per this source. As you mentioned under stressed situations, fumbling flasks and loose bullets not good, so paper cartridges made great sense to purchase and issue. Original paper cartridges still in containers, commonly seen at many gun show. Some list "six cartridges and eight caps" on label, which is interesting. Some I've seen tied with string, some the container are waxed presumably to help with dampness and moisture. For as common as it was in original era, not much general interest until recently. I acquired a quantity of old gun books and magazines (1959-1980), some describing the renewed interest in this topic around the Civil War centennial, that started the widespread and ultimate reproduction industry we now know. Very few articles on paper cartridges and most of those were for rifles or muskets in those. (Always thought an innovated subject would be recounting the black powder revival from circa 1960, including the early German and Italian reproductions, Dixie Gun Works, EIE, etc., )

Nice video! Well your paper cartridge looks better than mine. I tried it using common household items about 10 years ago using kleenex, sissors, elmers glue and a pen at my desk. The results were...hit or miss. They’d either fire or they wouldn’t and the powder loads very inconsistent. One day I’m going to give Dustin’s kit a try when I order a new ball and cap pistol

When I was at school we all used fountain pens so we had to use cartridge paper to remove any excess ink from writing and so fourth. That's when I discovered the origins of cartridge paper. Of course ours was not treated with potassium nitrate. We had enough problems with inky fingers and blots in the school books without the cartridge paper catching fire.

British-made paper cartridges caused the Indian revolt of 1857 when Hindu and Muslim soldiers discovered the cartridges were made water-proof with beef and pork fat, and the Brits trained them to tear the paper with their teeth (thus defiling their religious edicts).

If you are going to make paper cartridges, especially conical type, be sure they'll work with your revolver. Like the Pietta 1858 isn't cut out right to load them. And there are other brands where the head of the rammer is cut for a round ball and causes conical bullets to tip/jam

A buddy and I on a Saturday or two every Winter spend time sitting at a bench chatting and making paper cartridges with all the products you listed, and storing them in cartridge boxes, though empty altoid mint boxes work in a pinch. Then we spend another Saturday or two in the Spring firing them for a change of pace from metal cartridges. Good buddy time and fun. Stored well and dry I have had paper cartridges last 4 years without a problem, and I'm sure they would last longer. Takes a few to practice on to get it right then it goes pretty fast and is fun.

I think it's good to stress cap and ball was still used thoroughly throughout the west well into the cartridge era. Especially if you're modeling a farmer or homesteader, good chance is they carried a percussion muzzleloading rifle with them from the east.

You're correct about the nitrated paper. Soaking paper in a potassium nitrate solution will make it more flammable- the paper fibers get coated with the nitrate, which acts as an oxidizing agent. It should be noted this is different from flash paper: Genuine flash paper is soaked in nitric acid which changes the actual chemistry of the paper into nitrocelluouse. Nitrated paper is still paper, while flash paper is really a thin sheet of explosive celluoid.

There ain't a man alive needs to be known for a floppy cartridge and more than a few of the ladies that would not appreciate that either. After using that nitrate paper for hygenic purposes, I advise not eating spicey chili or backing your hind side too close to a camp fire. Great video as always.
