Remember, kids, the first thing to do when you find a habitable, life-sustaining, undiscovered planet is to go down to the surface yourself. That way, if there's any murderous locals, extremely dangerous giant animals, flesh-eating viruses, or some kind of odd anomaly that you didn't see coming, it'll affect you instead of, say, a drone you could safely use at first to scout the area, and you'll clear the way for future explorers in that the stories of your terrible deaths will tell them whatever they need to know :D

Even if they did, there's every reason to believe this planet is just as diverse as earth. We discover new species of animals every year. acidlion1 True, not sure what the in-game mechanics will be like with different planet sizes and atmospheres. We know that they're modelling atmospheres so I assume they'll have some effect on the ships.

The new Terrapin ship from Anvil that just got released had a thing its in Q&A that said it was so bulky and armored and not very aerodynamic in atmosphere. They said it would probably be safer to dock it in space and then land in another vessel if there were storms on the planet or a turbulent atmosphere as it can't maneuver.

Yeah the landing is pretty nice. Right now it still feels like landing a brick, but the CitizenCon '16 "homestead" demo did show they're putting in the shock absorbers on landing gear so it should animate more smoothly.

This trailer is meant as an "in game" commercial for selling this model ship- like a GM ad of today, presented like a story to sell product. It IS shot in engine- that's the actual Constellation in game, not something animated outside it. The angles and shots are obviously captured in game with a camera view, where you will play the game in first person or from behind the character/ship. Planetary exploration is slated for the game, just not likely at game release. The little armed rover has been announced/comes with the ship. The game is still pre-Alpha, and it's easily the most ambitious space sim/combat/exploration MP game of all time. I've been following it since Kickstart, and it' seems to me it's on track and looks fantastic, and the combat is amazing in testing.

I've already backed this, but I gotta be honest - this seems kinda ballsy/ showing "planetside" in a pre-rendered trailer when the hanger and arena commander are still glitchy as fuck. Not to demean Cloud Imperiums' efforts, but as others have pointed out, Frontier (Elite Dangerous) has managed to produce much more playable content in less time for less money. I'm sure it will come together eventually, but it does make me somewhat worried about my investment in terms of the short term goals they claim to be keeping to.

Well Elite has always been scheduled to be ahead of SC, it's release is literally months away. They're focusing on a much smaller part of the gameplay to start off with at launch and planning on adding more in expansions. Star Citizen has a lot more features being developed in parallel, on top of the single-seaters dogfighting, we got to see a bit of multi-crew ship gameplay yesterday, some planetside content, and an FPS combat teaser for PAX Australia. Although some of that is planned for Elite, it's going to be a while before you see most of it. Plus Elite is being developed by a 20 year old company that has it's own engine, funding from previous games and private investors, so they had a head start while CIG were building a development team and training them up in using CryEngine for Star Citizen.

Space is Hard. 2945 isn't too unlikely. Also there's a lot of back story and it's not been a smooth ride for humanity in the meantime. Large wars, dictators, "dark ages" type stuff.

Clint well look at it this way, we went from horses to space in less then a thousand years, so it seems to me that going from space, to farther into space would be easier, and even though we had wars and bad times, I think we would be a little more advanced in space travel then the equivalent of a space truck.

Yes, but much of the technology in this game is actually not even allowed by modern physics. Whereas the mathematics of rocketry (that are still used today) was devised over 100 years ago. This game is set in an era where owning a spacecraft is the same as owning a car, (hence the adverts) Not only that, but the components are so compact that you can have surface to orbit space fighters. To launch even an Aurora sized ship into orbit with today's technology would require thousands of gallons of fuel, several launcher stages and something like 1000 ground staff from project start to finish. In Star Citizen, you just hop in and launch off. It's FAR more advanced than our space travel. However, I'll give you that it's hard to predict progress as it happens at different rates.

Ryan Howser You're assuming that our technology and scientific knowledge will continue to grow exponentially for all of time. It is very possible that at some point down the road we will hit a peak in our understanding of the universe. We may very well develop FTL technology within the next 100 or 200 years but it's not a guarantee that we'll be able to greatly improve that technology during the following century.

Still a long way to go they end of 2015 when everything goes as planned. But they are releasing the game in 'modules" theyre chunks of the big mmo that this game is going to be. There is the hangar module where you can check out your ships, arena commander is the spaceflight part where you can fight against ai and other players then there is the fps module which will be released soon and then the planetside stuff which is exploring getting quests buying and trading all that. Its a crazy ambitiuos game but so far it looks damn good and the money keeps rolling in so they have the means to build this.

The ultimate goal for game performance is usually to make the game be able to run decently on the minimum required PC specs on low-medium(ish) graphics settings.

There will be a certain amount of procedural content for release for exploration, just not full on planetary generation. You'll also get regular content patches adding new things to find, and things will change naturally like some new jump points can appear, shortening trade routes or leading to new systems.

Jack Fraser (sorry for bringing up a week-old thread) E:D's procedural generation both works and doesn't work. It works because theres an infinite amout of planets and star systems to find. It doesn't work because, using an RNG, multiple systems are bound to be similar, if not identicle. It kinda takes the novelty out of exploration, imo.

Explore planets and space, even has ground vehicles too. It's pretty much going to be a living, breathing universe where you can do pretty much anything and go anywhere. It has taken a while but it looks like all their work is slowly coming together.

They are using a modified version of the cryengine and are exploring the use of procedural content. I understand where you coming from with limitations of the engine and vast planets, still, we will have to wait and see how it pans out. Would be nice to see full procedural planets in the cryengine as opposed to the method mass effect used of limiting to to a small section.

Same here, star citizen has some great aspirations with a limited budget. It's starting to come together nicely atm but I can't see the limited audience shelling out much more for the same. I think in similar terms, it would be nice if they figured out how to create vast procedural world's in the cryengine, but I expect them to compromise on their vision. I think many people, including myself, will be quite happy to be proven wrong.

Ryan Swift I have my life experience to tell me other wise, go and surf around on game videos, there is a whole lot more Fanboy comments against PS4 followed by a whole lot of thumbs up, and I speak for experience of online play from previous gen, there are just so much more 15 year olds on XBOX cursing from here to the moon, but hey maybe because previous gen Xbox actually had a more successful run, meaning more kids, just maybe that's the explanation, but still wouldn't change the fact.
