Kinda think I'd prefer if people could name ships what they want. If someone wants to call their ship something common then let them. Then they could use an ID code system kinda like a license plate. eg, "Enterprise 1234-CA" With "1234" being the ships code unique to each ship of that type, "CA" being the ship type (Constellation Andromeda in this case) and the name just being the personal touch. The issue I have with the current system is it'll mean a lot of names like: "XXenterpriseXX", "EnTeRpR1Se", "Ntrprise" which ends up looking tacky.

You could call you ship ! "Enterprise 1" to get around it

I tend to agree with the OP, but the fact is we WILL see tackiness for all sorts of reasons, not least from those players who are hell bent on beating the anti-profanity rule because they need to express to everyone just how edgy and rebellious they are.

Also something I didn't think of, it may encourage griefing. Someone may kill another player just because they want their ship name lol

@Devilikg The military is a different matter, and would be the equivalent of the UEE. Civilian boats however can be named anything, even if the names already in use, with the boats having a unique registration number, so actually my way would be closer to real life if that's your concern.

Could create a weird in-game market where someone buys a new ship, names it something popular, and auctions it off. It might also lead to some trolling, where someone gets a name and just stows the ship away forever, or specific ship names could be more susceptible to being attacked. At the very least, it's another reason to try to not get blown up.

you will not loose the name of the ship if you blow it up. I think this misconception came from the FAQ where it's asked "What happens if I reclaim my ship?" this is refering to reclaiming the pledge package not claiming ship through insurance in-game.

I think when they say you lose the name upon reclaiming it it means through the store, not through the reclaiming system in game!

Naming Lock-outs is simply a poor decision as each player must then complete with the potential creativity of the entire player base, per ship, rather than having the freedom to run with any (acceptable) name they like, but one that is tied to an authorised registry number... ya know, like the real world works.

Love the design of the ship and glad to finally see the Corsair. I think it's now my favorite ship tied with the Mercury, not sure which I like more. Not sure how to feel about the naming thing.

I don't really get the idea of unique ship names. It's not like there are thousands of real ships out there that bear the same name. Naming my ships is quite important to me and I don't want to search for hours to find any name that hasn't been taken already. Just give every player the ability to name their ships like they want to and call it a day. We don't need a overly cimplicated mechanic for everything.

@Devilikg Yeah, I like Eddy S's Idea from below, have a tag like a license plate number, maybe people can register those and they are unique (Like people do now) but limit it to 6 characters or something and its not the "name" but ship registry id or something. Then you may run into the "Enterprise" with a ship id of [142-SFK] or [ENR-PRS] for a registered ID if they really need that...

As i understood it: you can name your connie phynix 'enterprise' your connie explorer and every other ship 'enterprise' too As long as they are at least differnt ship variants within the ship class, or different ship class all together, the name is only exclusiv for 1 certain ship variant not even the ship class... if that makes sence

I think you misread the part about reclaiming ships. If I understand that's for if you melt it for store credit not claim insurance.

In the future, all ships will be able to be given a name. This particular pledge perk is for reserving a name for your ship ahead of time. If they do not follow through with this what's the point of naming the ship

yeah.. im not sure im a fan of the name lockouts. Names should really just me cosmetic, but not something that the systems actually ID you by. I also dont like how when that ship is destroyed, the name instantly goes back into the pool. There should be a timer that allows you to reclaim that name.

It's an issue because they won't let people use the same name. So everyone is fighting over the good ones and leaving the rest of us to use different names or do something dumb like put a bunch of numbers and letters after it because you want that name.

Well, I guess the Corsair isn't for me simply because of the design (which again opens the question why the Herald couldn't remain asymetric..), but at least it seems CIG is not going completely overboard with the Price, assuming it's a competitor for the Aquila. But I really don't get why they didn't simply add Exploration Modules to the Caterpillar and make the Corsair something else. I also wonder what kind of weaponry it has, considering the Constellations are already quite well armed. I'd kinda prefer having ship names permanent, it would reduce the amount of work for whoever has to do the profanity check a lot. No CIG employee names... makes sense but I hope they restrict it to full names etc. otherwise there would be a lot of blocked names already.

Totally not a competitor for the Aquila. It has basic equipment with nothing special designed for exploration (Despite what the brochure says). All it has that's better is guns and living comfort. The Aquila is way more equipped for exploration. Even if you remove the snub fighter and the rover, it's still the better exploration ship with its actual scanning station. There's a reason it's priced the way it is. The Corsair is a good competitor for the base constellation Andromeda and if you're running cargo, then the Taurus is still the better choice... Also, there could still be exploration modules for the Caterpillar, the corsair is nothing compared to the Caterpillar even without exploration tech.

I really don't like that. I've named some of my ships "Aurora" in lots of different video games for some time but because of this system if I ever get star citizen i will probably never own a ship called Aurora because it's a semi-popular ship name.
