Yes finally someone explained it how I wanted to. You said it exactly right!. Most people can't even recognize that they need 6 axiz of control. Let loan the reality that you need 8 axiz of control minimum. For full actuation. And analog at that. But I have one suggestion for you. Instead of using one of the hats for throttle control. You could use a foot pedal or pedals. Which if you've ever driven a car before. Maybe more intuitive. And intuitiveness is the name of the game for Human To Machine Translation Control Coefficient. Or (HTMTCC) Tm. You will be in Phase with your control mechanism. Which is described as being one with the controller. Which most easily and therefore most oftenlee occur with an intuitive control set up.

The pedal control for throttle control is a pure genius idea.
@BizarreSmalls5 жыл бұрын
you could use foot pedals for other things as well. in airplanes, they are for yaw. in the heavy equipment world, however, pedals can be a little different. instead of like a car or airplane pedal, where say, 0% is not pushing it and 100% is floored, some machines you can also push the pedal to - 100% Skidsteers with foot (pedal) controls have the 2 joysticks in each hand on 1 axis, forward and backwards (forward/backward for each side independently) and the foot controls are left pedal is boom up/down (toe/heel) and right pedal is bucket tilt curl and uncurl (heel/toe). curling could be said to be up (like scooping) and uncurl could be down (like dumping). So you can have 2 axes on pedals that way, rather than one. In excavators you have 2 pedals like that and 2 joysticks. So for the last one form of control, it would probably be best to have foot controls of the +/- variety, with a joystick and mouse. Although it will probably work best for multicrew ships. Then the gunner doesn't have to keep track of quite so much. Flying and not ramming rock/debris/other ships can be on the pilot, shooting the other ships can be on the gunner.

As someone who has owned Star Citizen for a long time but hasn't had the time, ability, or desire to dive in until just recently I thank you. I signed in last night and attempted a delivery mission only to get blasted out of space twice before reaching the pick up location. I came to the determination that I need to at least know how to use my supped up super hornet to defend myself. So I dove into arena commander for a while last night and realized my keyboard and mouse is lacking. Luckily I already own two of those Thrustmasters you have there in your video and I never even considered Joystick Mouse as a combo. So I'll be giving this a try tonight.

WONDERFUL presentation !!! I have one little thing to add and that is pedals. II was playing around finally getting a J&M set up going and decided to try my g-27 steering wheel to give me throttle forward (gas) and reverse (brake). While I'm sure folks who don't sim race will go and get this option, theoretically we CAN add two more analog inputs to your list. Now that I mention this I'm going to try to set up where I'll use the wheel for space buggies. It'll be awkward but what the heck.

Best hardware control setup for Star Citizen in the future that handles all 8 control things: 1. Pitch: Right joystick 2. Yaw: Right joystick 3. Roll: Foot pedals 4. Up/Down: Left joystick 5. Right/Left: Left joystick 6. Forward/Reverse: some small throttle/lever button or one button for forward and one for reverse on the left joystick 7. X Aim: VR goggles (head tracking) 8. Y Aim: VR goggles (head tracking)

I frequently bounce between Mouse and Keyboard, HOTAS and dual stick. Mouse and keyboard for turret operation, shield and power engineering. HOTAS for big ships since extreme throttle precision is very important to me. Dual stick for dogfighting. Fortunately this game makes it very easy to have all 5 of my devices recognized. I will be looking at adding a number/thumbstick pad as a 6th device just for specialized radar/EW work.

This is actually such a subjective thing and really hard to dive into in detail in a useful way, but I think you did an excellent job distilling down the nature of the control inputs and what each type of controller is good at, and showing what combinations work well for different systems of control. Damn good video! I also used to fly with a joystick/mouse combo. Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (left hand) and Logitech G600 (right hand). However I ended up switching to a Logitech G13 (left hand) and Logitech G600 (right hand). The Logitech G13 has 24 digital buttons and an analog stick (which can be used also as a digital input). I've also played around with a XBOX 360 gamepad. Control was great but aiming suffered. I now have a XBOX Elite Controller which I'll most likely use as a second option to my G13/G600 combo when I want to relax a bit more.

For pure aiming skills that's the best setup, no doubt. But gimbaled weapons is a must for this setup to shine. The possibility of adjusting our aim really quick is the main advantage of this setup, and with fixed weapons that goes away. For fixed weapon dual sticks still the best. Now if you ask me who would win betwen two skilled pilots, one with dual sticks and fixed weapons and the other with 1 stick + mouse, i really believe the fixed weapons has a little edge since it can spam damage much faster.

Gustavo dias okagawa Nearly all top 10 pilots are homas users. Only a few, who put significantly more hours into this game, are scratching their skill. Sad to see a skill based game around ships is actually not much more than aiming. 80% or more is your aiming. There is a reason, why first person shooter guys with jo experience in flying at all or coming from a sim like flying game, are actually ranked top 10 right out of the box with just their aim and enough common sense for the rest. Flying became more prominent now, but also reduces speeds, which even more favours steady aim. I am not the kind of person wanting to fly homas, because it ruins my immersion entirely. TrackIR aiming doesnt really go well. Your brain is forcing your head just to move close to the target, rest is done by your eyes...so you have to force yoirself everytime...and that only with a low resolution, high latency device lile trackir. Eyetracking would be the way, but there is no high precisiin eye tracking possible to do the task. I spoke to tobieye guys and it isnt tracking precise and fast enough to do such tasks. So...unless we go away from definijg the dogfight in this just as an fps shooter, we wont see realy depth and complicated to perform dogfight lile in a ww2 flightsim e.g.. (nooo..not warthunder). Staying aware in a 3d space, coordinating with your wingman, use your ships advantage and the enemies weaknesses? Sadly not in SC. I have some hope for a bit of readjusting and balancing....but it essentially is fixed in that direction. I go for multicrew cooperative stuff, although I would love to dogfight. But getting your ship beaten in 3-4 seconds by a meta built fighter flown by a battlefield or cs:go guy is a bit annoying after having over a decade of flightsim experience against or among the best of the best pc pilots out there. :( It is like it is...you need to please the old farts, the lowskillers and casual gamers to keep them playing. So. go casual with the flightmodel is, what they chose. Elite has more ship flying skill involved. Sad to have to admit that tbh. ;)

I totally agree with you, however, dual stick users can still do good with fixed weapons. Now with the new flight system, with afterburner merged with the cruize speed, we gotta manage our speeds in order to position ourselves better than the enemy. Don't give up dogfighting, i'm a pro battlefield player and i get my ass kicked sometimes against a few pilots with dual sticks and fixed weapons. Takes much more practice to master dual sticks than with homas.
@gutocracker7 жыл бұрын
To finish my point, dual sticks users should use weapons with high burst dmg even if it overheats too fast. The point is that the pilot with mouse and gimbals will hit you all the time unless you move like crazy and find small windows to fire like 1 second of pure s3 weapons damage (saying a sabre for instance) u avoid getting hit for 10 seconds, outmaneuver your enemy and fire at him 1 second and start to dodge again. At the end of the day flight skills can make a real diference.

I'd say I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to flight combat in general, but star citizen has got me very interested in it, so I loved this video! It's a huge eye opener. Right now I use stick and keyboard, and I tried using decoupled gimble assisted, which did work ok, but have gone to coupled fixed as of late. Makes sense why I gravitated towards that now as less control is just more forgiving even though it lowers the skill cap. I'm gonna start experimenting more with this information in mind though!

I came here to gain confidence in dual stick control... and found I was met with a strong argument of a different alternative. I am going to get a stick, I had one but gave up as it was a Thrust-master HOTAS X, and its just too big. As one side of the controller works fine, and the other tends to be just a brick. So I need to consolidate. I know I'll want a stick for flight, as I drew the same conclusions as you. I like having fixed and gimbled, and now that I Understand through your curt explanation of everything, I'm willing to give your preferred method a try. Being a fairly logic based person myself, it really does seem a no brainier.

Honestly I feel like people should just use whatever the hell they like I can land just as smoothly as someone with a joystick and throttle using a keyboard and mouse, it's called decoupling and it stops the ship from instantly stopping you after letting go of ctrl, and instead you'll continue down at the same speed, meaning you can actually lower yourself smoother than the throttle user sometimes joysticks and shit imo are just for immersion, if you wanna FEEL like the ace fighter pilot or pilot in general in the game, otherwise a keyboard and mouse is fine, hell it's even better since once you exit your ship you're INSTANTLY in FPS combat mode and don't have to whip out the keyboard or never do fps combat or just have to move your hand to a different thing in general
