Star Citizen: Nomad VS Syulen - What's the best advanced starter ship?

The Nomad is the undisputed premier starter for industrial game play (for me). It not only can haul a ROC, but use it's tractor beam to lift objects directly into the cargo bed without having to leave the pilot seat or land. The Syulen is more an aesthetic choice, with it's only important advantage being large QT fuel tanks. I have one, and use it as the fast claim ship I can use to move anywhere in Stanton if (ok, when) I get stranded somewhere - and I love the look and feel of the ship. Neither is very effective in combat, but the Nomad (with a ROC) will let you earn as much aUEC as you need to buy any other ship in game.

I could not agree with this more. The convenience of tractor beam control from the pilot seat CANNOT be understated. I have a C1 as my pledge, and while I love it, having to switch seats to control the tractor beam causes me to just not use it. I've used the Nomad to scavenge around salvage yards and made millions by picking up random weevil eggs and haul @ss if someone pops up on radar.

Something that's frequently overlooked about the Nomad is its oversized capacitor. It can power it's weapons almost on par with the Cutlass Black. That paired with with 3 size 1 shields makes the Nomad extremely good for burst performance in combat. It does catch a lot of bullets, but the capacitor allows you to put 100% power to shields and STILL have more shots available than any small ship (including fighters) in the game. And given that power to shields actually increases their resistances now, that's nothing to scoff at. I am a Consolidated Outland enthusiast though.

The reason why most people overlook the capacitors' stats is for the same reason that they don't pay much heed to things like fuel capacity. It's because those numbers are place holders and don't represent what their final numbers will end up being. Plus Capacitors are planned on being swappable components just like shield generators and power plants. So lots of changes are coming to them in the future.

When I introduced a friend to Star Citizen and showed him the starter ships, he pointed at the Syulen and excitedly exclaimed "That one!"" almost immediately. Yes, the Nomad is probably the stronger starter for industrial gameplay, but the Syulen just feels awesome.

I love both these ships, but I own the Syulen for it's unique aesthetic and no-ladder entry with all the amenities included. There's no arguing the nomad has more practical applications, it has that huge cargo bay in the back AND a tractor beam after all, it's great! But what is often overlooked is the flight profile, sound, and feel of the ship when you are actually flying it. The syulen is responsive without being twitchy, it sound like you're opening the registers on an organ when you fly it, pleasing your ears rather than annoying them, and has great overall atmospheric performance also. Furthermore, the incredible aesthetics aside, it just has a ton of firepower! 1 extra missile rack might not sound like much, but it's a full 50% more missiles over the nomad, in a much nimbler ship! Lastly I think it's just about the only ship currently in the verse to make effective use of the VK-00 quantum drive, as it's the only one with a sufficient qtf bay to power it for the full duration of its acceleration to max speed.

I love the Nomad, but one disadvantage that I never see anyone talking about in reviews is the HUD: it's orange and red. That seems nice until you realize that it makes differentiating threats from normal icons extremely difficult. It's the same issue Esperia ships have. I don't think it's necessarily a deal-breaker, but it's something to be aware of.

Consolidated Outland have been completely neglected. Would really like to see them get some more concepts, as well as some full size Kruger ships. Something as stylish as the Merlin/Archimedes would be a great addition to the verse.

I love both ships. Currently have a syulen pledged alongside my c1 and taurus. However, if I were made to start over with only a starter ship and no other pledges....it would be the nomad, hands down.

The Nomad by far. It's my starter ship of choice. It's a very versatile ship that can do almost anything. It can land just about anywhere with it's mag-lev landing gear, carry 24 SCU of freight and can carry vehicles up to and including the Tumbril Cyclones. Also, it has a kitchenette with a seat that slides out from under the counter, a bathroom and closet. If the components are fully upgraded, it can handle itself in a fight if necessary and it's speed will allow you to escape if needed. I recommend the C.O. Nomad for all your newbie needs.

I've had both now, and I'd definitely recommend the Nomad over the Syulen any day. The Syulen is neat, but it starts to get quite annoying in a lot of aspects. Small cargo capacity, an annoying elevator, a 10 minute cockpit entrance animation, annoying landing sequence that often requires third person camera, limited to 2 MFDs, an annoying ramp that's hard to open, can't store 1/8th scu boxes except on the floor inside, can't hold 2 or 4 SCU boxes, etc. Just get the Nomad. Especially with hauling missions in the game now, the Nomad is a Nobrainer. The Syulen is more of a luxury/see the sights type vehicle, especially with its quantum fuel tank. The nomad is for doing actual work

The Nomad was initially the starter ship I really wanted (ended up going Cutter) but knew it was too much of an investment despite having such a banging interior and the best cargo (with hauling/scrapping being the gameplay I wanted most). I basically convinced myself "While I wait for a PC that can handle the game, I'll stick with the Cutter and unless it immediately interests me I'll upgrade it to the Nomad, at least then I can justify the bigger purchase as a latter installment". While the gameplay focus hasn't really changed much (ended up getting a Vulture and C1->CL in time since) upgrading from the Cutter to the Syulen when that was revealed was absolutely one of the best decisions I've ever made. For a daily flyer just meant to fly or travel with to meet a friend in a different planet orbit, nothing is more fun than rocketing out of a hanger sideways to then jettison straight up like a Missile from a fighter. Flying it feels great, and having sat in a Nomad's cockpit the HUD being all in Orange really is annoying just with picking acceptable Quantum Jumps let alone what I'd expect it to be like in combat. The Syulen feels more like a fighter so the little combat I actually do is fun and i don't feel useless, and the only "difficulty" is trying to land but that's on me trying to look natural while doing it instead of taking my sweet time. Even inside, the Nomad somehow felt smaller than I was expecting when inside. I distinctly remember just feeling like the ceiling was low and that the space that I was expecting to be wider was not. I don't think the ceiling is any significant way shorter than most ships but I guess I just crafted a bigger interior in my head and the expectations not meeting led me to be disappointed. I admit having access to the C1 is a form of cheating, but I don't think I would have enjoyed the Nomad as much as I adore the Syulen. I don't think I'll ever upgrade this ship. All it really needs is a Kitchen (or a Water Fountain like from the Freelancer) and it's perfect!

The syulen is legitimately anti-meta lol. I love the look but it's genuinely not a good starter imo. It's difficult to land and takeoff, especially as the first ship for a player. Can't transport vehicles, has less cargo and can't carry loose cargo on it's grid. It's really a strong case of alien tax if there ever was. PS, yes I still own both 😅

I did like the Nomad when it came out and felt there was finely something that could challenge the Avenger Titan as my favorite ship to recommend new players get into if they wanted to get into Star Citizen game play right away. While the Titan is the cheaper option still at 75 for a starter package vs the Nomads 90 dollars its only real problem is it gets a bit close to Cutlass prices. However it has a good weapons loadout, cargo and a tractor beam to give it allot of flexibility to try out all sorts of game play loops, from bunkers to bounties to cargo and even ROC mining and being such an easy ship to fly. if you were going to spend close to 100 dollars on star citizen the Nomad is hard not to recommend. Great interior, interesting look and while the rear cargo is exposed its tucked in pretty good so its mostly exposed only from the very back. 3 shield generators with a decent payload gives you a few more moments to get out of trouble. Not that the Titan didn't make out good from being classed as an interceptor for its speed and its still a scrappy dog fighter but it's the bare minimum you need and the Nomad is just...plus Ultra in that regard.

One important detail that wasn't mentioned is Qt fuel. The Syulen has more than triple that of the Nomad, so if your looking at just strictly travel the Syulen is one of the best starter ships for getting around.

There's a good reason for why I didn't mention that. It's mainly because all QT and Hydrogen fuel numbers are nothing more than placeholders that don't hold any real meaning. They're going to be seriously rebalanced after the PYRO jump gate is introduced into the game. And then they're going to do it again after they have several adjoining systems strung together. So whatever their fuel capacity numbers are, they're going to change and most likely will radically change from what they currently are. What I suspect that they're going to do is, in the future, homogenize the fuel capacities of most of the smaller ships and then alter their fuel consumption rates based on what kind of components they have.

@lawofthewestgaming You're not wrong. I imagine they'll get quite the overhaul, and the Nomad clearly suffers in the Qt range simply by being an older ship. But considering the Nomads already been out for 3 years and getting more fuel might still be years out, Qt range is always a factor when I'm picking a ship.

I wish they redesigned Nomad a bit. It can easily fit a proper bathroom, that storage locker needs to be a suit locker and gun racks need to hold more than two rifles. Otherwise it's a perfect starter ship which allows you to engage with the most loops of the "game".

Love my Nomad, i set it up with 3 size 3 attritions. Things a beast agaisnt npcs in combat. Other players pose a problem if odds are against me but 1v1 i usually come out on tope agausnt another ship the same size

Great vid, glad you covered the little but important details like the Syulens cargo holding thing. In a practical sense, the Nomad is better. Just beware, its starting components are so bad it can easily overheat and shut down just getting you to the first space station. The weakness of lacking a shower is probably not that bad, since any 'cleanly' contact you have will likely be in an area with nearby showers anyways. As for the Syulen, the aesthetic is great, but the selling point for me is mainly the agility, nimble is freeing. 👍

I like the Nomad over the Syulen. for most of the reasons stated in the comments. The fact that for a non combat role starter, it is hands above any of the other single seaters. The Syulen, I am not all that a fan of. Sure the aesthetics are brilliant. I just don't see it in the same space. For me it falls way short.

I personally dont like either. The Nomad looks so weird and ugly. The Syuylen is a gimmick. I would jump to the Cutlass black. I had a freelancer but they changed the handling and made it unlivable so I had to upgrade to the Zeus. I wish I could go back to a cutlass though.

I owned both. Nomad is the CLEAR winner. I genuinely loved my Nomad. It was so flexible. But - i got it as a CCU... so never intended to keep it to being with. Same with the alien ship whos name ive already forgotten.... Thats how much i hated it Weak, less cargo, serious pita to land without additonal HUD improvements. Im a function over fashion kinda guy.

@QuotidianStupidity My Constellation Andromedia is my daily driver. But the Cutlass Black would be my next step up from a Nomad. Same core job, but more firepower. I prefer the Cutlass over Spirit or Freelancer because of the potential friend in the cutlass turret.

I'm a big CNOU fan but I very much dislike the Nomad. The design feels nothing like the Mustang. Too angular, looks more anvil. I love the retro look of the Mustang and hope any multi crew ships they make for CNOU resemble the mustang more.

The Syulen is ok...BUT...imagine this: 1. Elevator breaks down ...what then ? (there is no ladder which i see as a BIG problem + elevator killed me once) 2. What if someone shoots the 3 pointy thingies off ? those are its engines, how will it fly then? (I dont see it handling very well without those + landing = always tip over) 3. What if the ship loses electricity/power and you are stuck in pilot seat? Sure..get out of it but you are way up there and will fall breaking a leg or something. Injury in space = big No No! 4. What if there are 2 of you, one sleeping (no suit - PJ's ? lol) and other wants to walk outside in the vacum of space? Open the door and the person in the bed will die cuz there is no decompression or safety doors ...got plants in your room? be ready to exchange them each time you need to leave the ship in space or any other placer where no life supporting atmo available 😕 The Nomad...is a lil more ok because: 1. NO elevator thus only risk is the exit door. 2. Because of the shape of the ship, i dont see it being to much affected even if it gets in a few hits. 3. No electricity? no power ? no problem...you can still roam around safely...unless you want out and have to force the door open (applies for Syulen as well) 4. Because of coridors, it could act as a protection for people on the ship. No more deadly accidents for your pets, plants or companions. 5. No shower ? no problem, get a 2 SCU box, fill it with water and have a bath on your favorit moon/planet/place. Honestly ...im not a fan for both ships ... Syulen looks better then Nomad but still. I would rather just go for a Carrack / Odissey / Polaris /Idris / Kraken / Javelin :)

I do like me some Space Taco! But I still like the Titan better for a starter ship. I am not a fan of Syuylen!!! At least the Space Taco can hold something. The Syuylen holds as much as the Titan, is bigger/bulky, and landing that sucker is a chore! Looks cool though.

Skill issue! Nah but for real, it’s the only vertical landing ship so unless they release more vertical landing ships or you use the syulen as a daily driver, it’s a hard sell for me
