Star Citizen's 2024 New Features Promise & How 4.0 Could Get Close-ish

"I believe it when I can play it" is the best approach one can have with SC. Their intentions, their plan and all their talk about SC's future are completely worthless if they never ever manage to follow up on them. We've been playing the waiting game for over a decade now and the only constant in SC's development is delays. I'd say 4.0 live no sooner than ILW 2025. In fact I could imagine there's a good chance that they're going to release pyro with a loading screen just to have something for ILW if server meshing doesn't pan out. (Remember: icache blew up in their faces too...)

Truth is... we only need ONE singular thing to come which makes everything else work and fits the puzzle set Server meshing... that's the most crucial thing to get working nicely... and with that... everything else works It's like a big machine... the machine can't work if there is no power supply to power it That's what server meshing is to Star Citizen

@@kajmak64bit76 server meshing is not going to magically fix everything. Even desync will depend on how servers are set up and how they hold together. Meshing is an important building block but ultimately it’s just one (TEMPORARY) part of the foundation we’re hoping to finally have at some point. And that’s assuming it works on release... which is almost certainly not going to be the case. We’ll probably need another patch or two after that to reach some form of stability dynamic meshing is going to be where it’s at, but I suspect that’s a whole other can of beans

I never understood how people can claim an estimated release date is a "promise". It's an educated guess at best. When creating things you can never know for sure when it'll be ready until it's actually ready, because there can always be unexpected problems.

Hygiene was discussed years ago before you started covering the game. It's a reputation based mechanic on maintaining literal hygiene in the game. Showering and looking presentable in game. I believe it will tie in with appropriate clothing and attire for mission giving down the road.

Exploration as in the sense of truly exploring unknown will never be in SC. All new content will be found and that's it. I mean that theres not much to explore when they add a system or two at once. It's a video game and all in it has to be created by someone or generated. Generated content is also not fun in general after seeing its foundation. It just becomes a few variations of itself. So nah, exploration like europeans exploring americas, is not ever gonna happen.

Exploration in the sense that I scan for resources in some remote location and discover something useful for a miner or salvager (or ...). Then I drop a marker on it and post that location to the Org for someone else to exploit. At one point they mentioned launching probes for this type of discovery. Even offered extended scanning capability promises for exploration ships like the 315 and others and specifically sold exploration ships since conception.

4.0 will take at least until CitizenCon next year is my guess, just look at how long they took getting the actual SC specific 3.23 features in like cargo/ship elevators and physicalized cargo. Server Meshing is even further up there in complexity and impact.

I still think this has potential to be awesome. Ive always liked the look and feel of the ship combat. Ive read some things about their updating the control systems, etc. and ive always wished there was more out of the box functionality and kind of wonder where theor overall direction in terms of gameplay. Ive been iffy about the planets, but the space stuff has usually been pretty attractive. Backed about…probably 12 years ago and check it iut from time to time. I liked his old games a lot and think its just a really big expansion on that universe. So…i hope they do some really good stuff

Backers need to stop backing until CIG starts delivering. Each shiny new promise is rewarded with money based on the fear of missing out and CIG isn't ever held to keep a promise. They need to have a year where a wake up call happens and they are forced to trim the fat and focus on creating an actual functioning patch with long standing issues resolved. Until they can prove that they can succeed on smaller issues why trust that they can complete anything related to the grand plan.

Nope, "Theaters Of When" hasn't been released yet...and as it has become a meme by now, the general consensus among backers seems to be that it never will. Remember when SeanTracy told us at CitizenCon 2019 that "there would be no reason to hold this back" and "I want to get you guys into it early next year"...and then early in 2020 we were told, again, that "we are very much on track for this" and "we are not behind at all"?! "Theaters Of When" is still MIA in 2024. Someone look at this and tell me with a straight face that either, SeanTracy wasn't lying to us in that last instance and they didn't already know at that point that we wouldn't get it, or he was seriously still confident and then shortly after "whoops who could've known" they indefinitely delayed it till this day. Both possibilities look like various levels of "incompetence" to me.

Will they get 4.0 out by the end of the year. I say they will, but that's not the biggest question. The bigger question is, how playable will 4.0 be? 3.24, while representing a huge shift in the behind the scenes code, took months and I would argue, as I did in testing chat, that it shouldn't have gone live. I think it went live so that they could start pushing for 4.0. Now I don't even care at this point if it is unplayable so long as progress, actual, real progress; not the kind of 'baby steps' that is constantly defended by players. I will give CIG credit where it is due. They have been working on hotfixing and patching the live build since it dropped on Friday. That's commendable. I think they are going to push hard to have 4.0 drop by Dec 20th, come hail or high water. I just worry that we go into Christmas vacay with a barely playable game.

All things considered, this has been a fantastic year as far as meeting promises go. For any other game company id be pissed but this is star citizen, and 69% of things in 75% through the year is definitely a MAJOR improvement. They never said Basebuilding would make it this year. They stated that basebuilding would get work started this year, specificly start of this year. They never mentioned it would be done in 2024. i have had this discussion about 600 times, and have rewatched and checked wording used. Its not comming in 2024. they never said. Most of the things we have shown will make it in 2024. And for basebuilding specificly they started with, we are planning to start work on basebuilding in 2024.

SC, in the many years I've followed, is the best example of lowering expectations every year, just to find that they're still too high. Between 2020-2023 I was feeling more and more salty, as things that I had been shown the year I pledged (2016) still hadn't made it into the game (Many of which still haven't, btw). Then, in 2023, something felt different, and my stupid ass reluctantly gave them the benefit of the doubt. Not "trusting" them, but I let myself be more excited and hopeful than the previous few years. And once again, delays and excuses. It seems even more likely now that 4.0 will not be live this year, which gives us "two" major patches this year - I add quotations because 3.24 was initially supposed to be part of 3.23 - and now we're about a month and a half away from CitizenCon. How am I supposed to be excited? How am I supposed to keep watching their content, hearing their words, and somehow believe anything they say? 4.0 isn't going to solve all our problems, either. It's the start of a whole new sleugh of them. And it's still the same company that thinks finding an item in game that allows you to BUY a ship with real money but not in-game is a fun event. Same company that made excuses for almost a decade about "Well we had to start a whole new studio..." and, "No-one else is doing what we're doing!" Oh, and, "But we have to develop while the game is live!" All to justify the abysmal decisions and progress of this project. My confidence that this project will see 1.0 is not zero, but my confidence that it will be anything other than a rich space dad screenshot demo is getting near zero. I just feel bad for the folks I brought into this project with me back when I was more confident. Many folks that pledged and still haven't played because it's still so far from a real game. Can't wait for 2025 where surely things will finally change!

There's too much features in 4.0 for me to believe all of it coming in one go... I still think CIG might drop 4.0 before end of the year but not soooo many features... I feel they should focus on stabilizing server meshing issues before adding additional features

s42 is "feature complete". A lot of dev are free for SC now.... but It's still the same slow paste this year....why ?

Because the features that delayed everything this year (instanced hangars, server meshing) aren't done by the devs that worked on the single player game. They don't have the expertise to do that. What we just experienced was the SC skeleton crew (mostly network engineering I'd guess) working in their usual slow pace we've been used to for the past 5 or so years.

Look at their May SQ42 letter and you'll notice that they implemented new AI features that month. It turned out as usual Chris couldn't help himself and decided to add more features, so even if it was feature complete last Citizencon that changed this year back to 'not feature complete'.

The real question is do people want to hear the truth? Its not easy to go on stage when people spend time and money to be there just to tell those people its not going to plan. I would honestly prefer chris being honest than optimistic and the root of all the over estimations is citizen con. Who in there right mind would hold a massive event just to say they are behind schedule. Chris better figure shit out soon and if squadron isnt a hit i think the whole project may go under if the next couple years continue to be a dissapointment

You know back in 2012 I was so excited to play this game and i bought a ship was just started waiting I was like what 24, I thought i would be playing this in a few years from then you know around 30 well now I'm almost 40 and this game still isn't even close to being ready. There is literally a entire new generation of gamers who weren't even alive when this game was announced... Like enough is enough put your details in after you have a working game. You gonna delay the game every year cause oh I want you to be able to wipe the rain off your visor.... You know stupid things like that. Anyways I hope it comes out but if it doesn't i only wasted 25 bucks 11 years ago
