I have to admit that even I picture the Precursors as upright beings as based on their description from SC2. That being said, their appearance aside, I think in writing they were characterized as they should have been in SC3. The idea that they figured out how to devolve themselves and hide in plain sight was a really good plot point.

+Tealdragon204 The Slylandro never say they were apelike. The only describe them as shaggy giants and "Shaggy Ones". They make no distinction if they are upright or not. Some other source, maybe it was the SC2 manual but I don't remember for sure, says that the Precursors must have been giant woolly mammoths judging on how their controls were configured.

The problem was, Toys For Bob had no creative control over this. It had almost no continuity with SC2. On its own though, it's not a bad game.

I agree that it's not a bad game but the tone of the game is very depressing and UI and voice acting is kinda dull. Have you played SC: Origins? It would be great if SC3 was remade with that engine and UI. The story of SC3, especially the devolution idea is brilliant, but it's revealed very poorly.

Toys For Bob is working on a proper Star Control 3, as for the stardock game, it's good but it is star control in name only. There are no links to previous star control lore or stories.

What's ironic about this assessment of humanity is it is a human assessment of humans without any basis for comparison with which to gauge what is or is not greatness. Fact is we don't know if we're doing it right or doing it wrong or what we're even supposed to be doing if anything at all. Arrogance comes from both directions when imagination is all one has to compare with. Once we actually meet other races that aren't covered up by government interference, we can better know where we stand.

I liked how they resolved. I think everyone mad expected them to be some sort of angels or gods or something. I liked that they ended up being just another race, except they were smart enough to survive the cyclical nature of the universe and that's how they surpassed every other race. I also liked how EVERY RACE thought they were the "true" progenitors of the Precursors and made them into Gods in their own images. But yeah, this scene is TOO LONG and kind of dumb in a "Matrix The Architect Explains All" ergo ... sans... ergo ergo... colonel chicken explaining to Neo... kind of way. It seems kind of cliche to dump ALL THE ANSWERS at the near end, just before a climatic battle. (granted, this came out before The Matrix!)

Actually, ME's concept of spaceflight comes from much earlier sources such as "Doc" Smith's Lensman series and has little enough to do with warp or this series' version of hyperspace. So it you want to be fair, most of the seeds for SF cosmology were sewn even before Roddenberry's career even started. My comment was written before ME3 came out, and at the time it seemed goulish galactic civ farming was a reasonable enough reaper trope.

The melee looked better and play more dynamic than in Starcon2, but the story line lacked "wow" factor of the second game. Star Control 3 had the most complex story and brings every thing togather for 1&2, but the meaning of the story was lost in all the insignificant details, and insignificant races that you wish you could just threatened to nuke if they didn't play ball. The lack luster missions/challenges and constant condensation form lesser races is what killed some of the fun for me.

Gosh! I missed the days where games were carefully and heavily scripted. Not just like nowadays games that are just relying on graphics. SC series, flashback, syndicates, i love them so much!

Amazing how much Mass Effect used the nearly same plot points about "forming sentience at the time" right before the Reapers killed all the races and that the Asari "develop sentience very early in the galactic cycle". Almost like ~plagiarism~....

@WUZLE Yeah, in fact the ideas were so good that Bioware chose to rip off the story and setting almost verbatim. I've been replaying SC2 for the first time in years (though I missed SC3 first time round) and was starting to get the feeling that it was a little too similar to Mass Effect, but this clenches it. ME's story is just a SC redux.
