Star Control and Starflight were two games I had to add to my Genesis collection back in the late 90s when I started collecting. So much time on these...😅

Man I recall trying so hard to understand and get through star flight at 8 years old. Way too advanced though I know i loved the combat. That and Buck Rogers are the two that stumped me. Now as a adult maybe I'll have a better chance

- My favorite version is Genesis - Can’t wait for the comparison of aspect ratio consoles: 4x3 vs Pixel Perfect (for example: NES/SNES [8x7])
@CptJistuce6 ай бұрын
Gonna blow your mind. 4:3 IS pixel-perfect. Super Nintendo just doesn't have square pixels.
@HyperMarsonPlumber6 ай бұрын
@@CptJistuce No dude, it’s stretched to 4x3 in the original consoles. The correct aspect ratio (Pixel Perfect) of NES & SNES is 8x7. so you can only use Pixel Perfect on emulators, NES/SNES classic, Analogue consoles & Switch Online (not on the original consoles).
@CptJistuce6 ай бұрын
@@HyperMarsonPlumber This is a common misconception, but the idea that pixels are always square is very modern and has only become an ironclad rule in the HDTV era. The Super Nintendo graphics chipset was designed to fill a 4:3 video frame with 512x240 pixels. This sounds very wrong because the most common video modes black out the first and last 8 lines, and double-strike horizontally, leaving an effective resolution of 256x224 that isn't truly 4:3 because it is slightly letterboxed, but is much closer to 4:3 than 8:7. Had Nintendo's engineers wanted square pixels, they could have designed the hardware to do that. 320x240 gets you square pixels, as does putting 256x224 into a smaller portion of the line(typically inset into a frame of BG color on hardware that does this). They didn't do that, because they wanted 256-pixel lines that went across the entire screen for whatever reason(save RAM, make math easier, maintain continuity with the Regular Nintendo are all plausible reasons). But the hardware outputs non-square pixels by design, not because Nintendo didn't know how TVs work.
@CptJistuce6 ай бұрын
@@HyperMarsonPlumber That's a common misconception, but square pixels were not at all the standard back then. "Pixels are square" didn't become an ironclad law until the rise of HDTV. On analog TV, a pixel's width is a direct function of how long the hardware draws it for. Nintendo could've made pixels narrower by drawing them for less time. They would've had to put more pixels on the line, or include padding to avoid breaking the timings. They chose to make 256(or 512) pixels that covered the full length of a scanline, and their engineers were not ignorant of how televisions worked, so they know they were making a system with very wide pixels. (Sega, by contrast, chose to make the Genesis fill a scanline with 320 pixels, giving them much squarer pixels. And going back farther, the Commodore 64 used 256 pixels, but significant padding on the sides.)
