17:00 To answer Arin's Star Trek question, ships have two different types of "shields." The shields that the ships raise and lower in Star Trek are energy shields, meaning that they are energy fields designed to repel high intensity energy (photon torpedoes, phasers, etc.), which includes kinetic weapons as kinetic energy can also be dampened or repelled by these shields. Ships also have a directional reflector field or reflector shield, which is designed to repel solid objects that may be in the path of a moving ship. That way, a ship moving at impulse or warp speeds will not be ripped to shreds by small pieces of debris or rocks that lie in the ships path. Also, energy shields I believe can be tuned to repel certain frequencies of energy but allow others through which could allow for transporter function through the shields (it's one of the reasons why the Borg are such a problem in the show as their drones can attune their personal shields to eventually repel all frequencies of personal phaser weapons.) Correct me if I'm wrong though.

@@rochnrollhs/videos Correctamundo. The main deflector would operate by projecting energy fields or high-energy particles out ahead of the ship to either annihilate (in the physics sense, like matter and anti-matter) or "nudge" something out of the way. If it's too big to do that, then the ship would need to drop from warp and adjust its course to avoid an impact. If a hydrogen atom is recognized (or a pocket of hydrogen) the matter would be nudged towards the flight path of the ship's nacelles in order to be picked up by the Bussard collectors.

17:00 I don’t watch much Star Trek, but in Clone Wars if they roll a grenade slow enough it can go through shield. It may have to do with something like... they block a certain level of kinetic energy?
@BATTIS944 жыл бұрын
Yep, I remember that kinda stuff happening in star wars. Reminds me of a motion sensor (or even a seatbelt), if there's a strong pulse the shield reacts to it. But in Star Wars there are different types of shields. If I remember correctly, ships shields allow people (and objets) to go through them, but the door/wall shields (like the ones in Darth Maul duel scene in episode 1) don't. Don't know how Star Trek shields work, though.
@Lambda_Ovine4 жыл бұрын
Well, that's star wars and not Star Trek. Star Wars is more fantasy in space than science fiction.
@TransientWitch4 жыл бұрын
Star Trek shields are basically impenetrable until you either deplete/disrupt/overload them through relentlessly blasting them or like...Flying into an active nebula and instantly depleting them, or whatever...Or by figuring out what frequency the shields operate at and adjusting your weapons and transporters to compensate. Physical objects cannot pass through an active deflector shield though. Star Wars shields work differently in that they basically only deflect other energy...Even in Episode IV, the Rebellion specifically says they have to use proton torpedoes because the part of the Death Star they needed to damage to cause the destructive chain reaction was shielded against blasters. It's a tad inconsistent at times, since some of the fighter sim games just use shields as a recharging health bar but most of the attached media depicts energy shielding as protecting against blasters, ion weapons (basically electrical guns, really good against machines but more like stunguns on steroids on organics), and even lightsabers while physical armor plating or physical shielding was used to protect against physical objects like kinetic slugs (bullets, but not necessarily like modern firearms), non-lightsaber melee weapons, and grenade blasts. An energy shield might protect you from, say, a thermal detonator going off outside the shield's perimeter, but it won't stop the grenade from smacking you in the face because it can't dissipate kinetic force. Hence why they could just roll bombs underneath active energy shields and the blasts still damaged the droids! There IS a third option, too! It's one which works very much like what you described...Mass Effect's shields and barriers are not actually always active, hardsuits with shield/barriers installed will snap the barrier on if the suit's onboard sensors detect an incoming object going at a certain level of speed. They will snap on to block bullets, shrapnel from grenades, high-speed impacts, that kind of thing...But in-universe, they won't stop someone from just walking up to you punching you in the face. The first game even reflected that in mechanics, because Korgan, Rachni, and some Geth were terrors on high difficulty because they would just charge up to you and one-shot a non-soldier character with a melee strike that your stupidly huge shield pool did nothing to defend you against!
@RuNoMai4 жыл бұрын
Stargate used a similar idea for Goa'uld personal shields. Energy-based or fast-moving objects like bullets they could deflect, but anything moving slowly enough (such as an arrow or something tossed by hand) could pass right through.

In Re: Energy/solid shielding. This is a concept that goes back to the Golden Age of Science Fiction. In short, and a little for laymen: yes, energy shields protect against energy. Presumably, in Star Trek, the ship's hull would be what protects the ship from physical impacts, unless they also have physical shields (which would also be energy; in Star Wars, if you pay attention to the Death Star Trench Run briefing, they mention ray shielding--i.e. protection from energy--and particle shields--i.e. protection from physical objects--and that the exhaust port is ray shielded but not particle shielded, which is why the proton torpedoes have a chance of getting through.) However, one of the interesting quirks of the implications of relativity is that matter at (or nearish) the speed of light is indistinguishable from energy, so if you travel as fast as possible (and it's implied, in Star Trek, that "full impulse" is actually pretty close to the speed of light) your energy shields will protect you from both energy and physical threats. At least, as long as they're operating properly; each significant hit reduces their potential effectiveness.

Hearing Arin go straight from the Philip DeFranco impression into the Cliffy voice was really cool for some reason.

Usually in sci fi, shields repel energy blasts but not solids, like Arin said. That's why you'll usually see solid torpedoes getting fired at a ship, usually do cause damage to shield generators if not entirely gut the ship in one go. If that's not the case, then the shields block everything up to a certain volume of fire, so a whole bunch of explosions overload them and leave the ship vulnerable. Sci fi is cool, yo.

Thanks for sharing that. I honestly love older games like this. Adventure games aren't really like this anymore. It was fun to hear Dan's enjoyment with Arin's voice acting.

I'm so glad Arin got into the game a bit instead of just mocking it, that really makes me happy. "I think it's time," reminded me of the Ross moments I loved so much in the other series. Absolutely love watching Dan play these classic adventure games. I grew up with them too, and it's great to see his enthusiasm and nostalgia, and the comments from people experiencing them for the first time because of you. Looking forward to more!

Such an amazing series. I never knew about Space Quest (as a kid born in 2000, anyway) but I've deeply enjoyed these episodes and getting to experience them with Dan, Arin and Ross.

In pretty much every sci-fi shields block both energy and physical things (even Independence Day. Note the shields blocked missiles). It basically blocks anything so it needs to be lowered to launch fighters or anything like that. It's also very important that a space ship has shields to block random debris in certain areas of space since a weak part of the hull could get pierced and cause the ship to depressurize.

I really want more storygames on Grumps - and this ratio of comedy and taking the game seriously works really well too. Honestly, my top choice would still be The Last of Us with Dan playing. Especially right now that would be the perfect time investment

The audio is superb .. voice dynamics are perfect to my ear. Keep on keepin on! I gotta tell ya that series like this really help me get thru difficult times. I can be the absolute Turd in a Punchbowl but I spend most of my time helping others feel better about themselves. Sort of an Equalizer you might say. To quote one of my favorite authors: "When the going gets weird, the weird turn Pro." Special shout out to all your golfing endeavors. Every single iteration of Kirby Golf has soothed my soul. I gotta say Thank You just for being you and being there for me. Thanks You Grumps!!

"I'm going to die on camera." "No it'll be funny, because one day [the chair] will break on camera." Arin really likes things meeting their demise so long you get footage, doesn't he?

The Genetix logo is a friendly jab at Sierra's spinoff company Dynamix at the time. There was a SQ7 in the works, but that was during the time when all adventure games got canned and Sierra got massively reorganized. I forget if the Collection has some of the production concepts in the bonus material but if you google it there's a lot of info out there.
