Yes! The Gladiator is one of my favorite Imperial vessels along with the Vindicator/Interdictor. A great specialist that doesn't sacrifice her multirole capability. One of the few times the Flight-Deck Cruiser concept has been done right. Although I would be tempted to sacrifice some of the hanger space for a couple medium cannons and/or some ion cannons. Then again, she's already got a sizable missile/torpedo compliment so having big guns isn't as necessary. And so glad that you covered how strange the number of fighters on her official stats are, never understood why she would have fewer fighters than the expanded hanger variant of the Vindicator which could hold 72. I wish these vessels got more time in the lime light. Imagine how fun it'd be to see a battle group of composed of Dreadnoughts, Gladiators, Broadsides, and a couple of Vindicators/Interdictors supported by Carracks, Lancers, Arquitens, and Raiders go up against large rebel and pirate forces. And I have to point this out, but the longest warship ever built in real life is the USS _Enterprise_ CVN-65 at 342 meters long. Longest ships built though are the tanker _Seawise Giant_ at a whopping ~459 meters long and the 488 meter _Prelude_ FLNG which is technically a floating platform.

Since you mentioned that 26 fighters seems small but these were refitted to carry 1200 troops, maybe that small fighter compliment was post refit. As you explain this ship is at heart an aircraft carrier, not a troop transport. Therefore it can be assumed that they were not built to accommodate such a large compliment of troops in addition to the ship's crew and fighter wing. A refit to accommodate the extra personnel would likely take away from that hangar space, thus reducing the fighter compliment. I would conclude that your estimate for the fighter compliment is correct upon initial commission for this class when it was a dedicated carrier. The "official" source's fighter compliment still seems low but would be a better number for a post refit Gladiator. Perhaps this small fighter compliment is also due to prioritizing larger fighter compliments to the growing numbers of ISDs, upcoming SSDs, the Death Star, as well as all of the garrisons on conquered planets. In addition there are also the squadrons assigned to defend high value targets like ship yards, and R&D facilities like the ones used to develop the Death Star. Perhaps the small fighter compliment is due to this ship going from being an aircraft carrier to being more like a equivalent to a USMC assault ship.

I think two hundred and fifty is probably a reasonable number in it's standard configuration. I also envision them as tenders to other Imperial support craft, using it's cavernous hanger to repair, rearm, and refuel a half dozen or so Raider corvettes at a time, or numerous Gozanti freighters, or Lambda, Sentinel, and Zeta class shuttles. It could carry numerous gunships as well. The idea is that if the Empire needed to land large numbers of troops at a time, more so than a standard destroyer could deploy at once, they would call up a Gladiator full of freighters and shuttles, which pick the troops and vehicles off their capital ships, and land them all at once to overwhelm a target. Of course, if there is time and distance to play with, they might still have Acclamators lying around as well.

Always thought the main Flagship for the Mando's in S3 should be a ship 600m or larger. The Gladiator seems like the perfect Mando Flagship for what they were aiming for in terms of style of fleet. I think the fleet would look as follows Gladiator as a flagship, two Arquintin Classes as heavy fire support, 5 Gozantis for supply/Troop transport and fighter screening, the Komrk class Transport then a bunch of Fang and Z-95s as fighters. I just always felt the Medium class ships in Star Wars seemed more versatile than smaller counter parts. The Imperials Light Cruise seemed to be dedicated to ship to ship combat with the base model not even having a Hanger. Then most other ships of similar size or smaller were built for specific roles like fighter screening, troop transport, or missile "boat". Whereas the Gladiator, Enforcer, Accamator, and Vindicator classes being all around the same size with more versatility to them all seemingly carrying their own fighters and having a wider variety of weaponry.
@mouse3872 Жыл бұрын
And I would love if we saw that these small outer rim imperial factions were informed by Thrawn to only utilize medium to small ships to avoid The New Republics eyes. After all a few Gladiators aren't a huge threat to the new Republics fleet even if it was small. Again would be really cool to see The Mando's using a Variant of the Gladiator against a Imperial fleet of Vindicators. Like a larger scale war is still being fought in the Outer Rim but due to the more limited supply chain and resources available the Empire and any faction that formed would be forced to utilize fleets with Flagships that are less than 1000M

I just took into consideration one thing that made sense with the 24 tie fighter and the absurdly low count . Because this ship may have been in service as a ship that uses 24 fighters of any make or model suggesting as a dedicated fighter carrier of multiple kinds of fighters it would not have tie fighter racks. But instead tie fighter designed to land on ground along with any other fighter type.

I think more likely it carried 72 fighters. 1) The proposed size of the hangar bay is comparable to the hangar bay for the ISD. 2) You cannot hang your fighters from the ceiling and then cram more on the deck without having to consider not being able to launch any that are not up front. 3) Tie Bombers and Tie Interceptors take up more space than just regular Tie's do. 4) Given the height of a TIE fighter at almost 9 meters. The hanger could house 75 TIE fighters spaciously at 6 times the volume. Or more likely 112 TIE equivalent at 4 times the volume for each fighter. The standard TIE having 561.94 cubic meters. 5) It has more than one Hangar Entrance, these have to be kept clear so nothing hear or in the way of them. 6) Any shuttles landing are going to cut into any TIE's hanging from the ceiling unless there is a wide path for the wings and tail to pass thru. And that's why I think it is more like 72 TIE fighters like the ISD.
@sim.frischh97815 жыл бұрын
220 TIEs DOES sound like a decend force. I did not expect this ship to have such potential. Personally i really like the design with the split bow, but the front facing hangar entrance makes the ship more vulnerable than the Venator.
@casbot714 жыл бұрын
Now the challenge is for *_You_* to improve the Venator. Perhaps the twin bridges converted into one complete bridge so flight command and the ships pilots could interact directly. And the usual caveat of fixing the bloody vulnerability of having sick an exposed bridge. Giving it a bridge based around the Gladiator would be more protected - if not going for a holographic internal bridge. What I would've done in the Clone Wars (assuming Palpatine got eaten by a Zillo beast) was refit some Venators as heavy hitting sluggers, while keeping the external appearance the same. The simplest way is just load up the entire carrier bay with missiles and torpedoes, and stick in extra launchers (behind concealed doors so the enemy can't identify which ship is what type until the battle starts) so that it can unload massive salvos on the enemy ships, overwhelming point defense with a barrage of heavy missiles and ion warheads. That way you don't need to rewire the whole ship and fit extra reactors to power Turbolasers ect. It sits in the fleet with the standard Venators and when it's showtime the CIS captial ships get rocketed to death. Any other improvements you can think of? It's worth a video. A better design would be to use protected side hangar exits, but that would mean a comprehensive rebuild into a different ship, not a improvement on the design. As for the Victory class, what a stupid mission profile during the Clone Wars - it's a heavy hitting anti capital ship slugger with Turbolasers galore, covering a glaring weakness of the Venator fleet. But then it also specialises in ground assault deployment, a area already well serviced by the Venator and a completely different mission profile to it's main job of beating up other capital ships. It would have been better served to completely dispense with carrying ground forces and instead use the space for extra combat potential in full scale space battles, perhaps with some point defence or just more Turbolasers. The only way this ship makes sense is if Palpatine had it designed specifically for the post war Empire as a planetary control ship and had the ship built so it would be just getting into service when he pulled the trigger on Order 66. Then it's mission profile does sort of make sense.

@airplanenut894 жыл бұрын
I know this is old but I can't help myself. Depending on the navy, the class name could either reflect the name of the first ship, or a theme of the class. This is best seen with the British Royal Navy where ship classes were identified by proper names such as Queen Elizabeth, King George V, Leander, Revenge, Illustrious, and Implacable. In other cases, usually with smaller ship classes that would be in greater numbers, the classes were named based upon a theme or even just a letter. Such classes include Town, County, Colony, Tribal, Flower, Battle, G, C, R, ect. The same naming trends can also be seen in the Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial German Navy), and later the Kriegsmarine (Nazi German Navy). This doesn't really seem to translate to the US Navy however as it seems every ship class we have had has a lead ship name. In the case of the Gladiator, Venator, and Victory classes, it is likely that those names are the names of the lead ship. Victory could also be a name theme where the class is called Victory but all the ships are named for famous victories of the Galactic Republic. Imperial does seem more like a class name theme as back when I would mod the ship rosters in Empire at War, Empire sounded like a better ship name than Imperial. The rest of the class being named for large, imposing things which command respect, and order. thus the title Imperial.

I just did the rough math. And with your dimensions for the hanger, it's possible there's an error in the account of how many ships it can hold. I believe that it was meant to say 26 squadrons of fighters, which would total out to 312 fighters. That could be accounted for by extending the hanger back a bit further, but that's quite reasonable, IMO. And if we're talking about only TIE variants, then they are most certainly hanging by racks near the ceiling, allowing for a number of shuttles, TIE Bombers, and possibly even a Raider-class Corvette if needed.

Heck, what if that hanger on the Gladiator was used for something else other than fighters? A CR-70 can fit in there after all. Or a bunch of VT-49's, which might be better at providing air support to elite special forces on planets with no air presence then TIEs could. I'm thinking a VT-49 transports a bunch of troopers down on Backwater X, and then goes back up in the sky to act kind of like how we use AC-130's or Hind helicopters in real life. With the amount of troops on board the gladiator, you need to have loads of ways to get them to target areas quickly; and since we're talking about a backwater, there might only be a nominal Civil Air Patrol guarding the airspace on some of the planet at best. So I could easily see only 24 TIEs being deemed necessary for that mission profile, and is instead loaded up with a metric buttload of special forces dropships and gunships. Sort of like a real-life Wasp-class Assault ship that the USMC uses, only holds 6 fighters but has 12 Ospreys, 4 attack helicopters, 4 Super Stallions, and 4 UH-1Y's in its standard configuration. Of course the Wasp-class can be switched out to have 22 Ospreys for pure assault or 20 fighters for pure air control- which would be more in line with the carrier mission set.

My theory is the 26 Starfighter number is like the 144 number for the Executor, it's not it's maximum carrying capacity but it's standard operational complement, since so many Gladiators were reporposed for patrolling remote planets alone. It doesn't need hundreds of Fighters for that, and it would just be more expensive to maintain a Tie Wing of that size in the outer rim. Gladiators in major Fleet engagements probably come fully stocked with 120-200 Tie Fighters. That's just my headcannon.

I think I can explain the low starship capacity: Imperial Logic. Have a ship designed to carry fleets of starfighters into battle? Fill it with Stormtroopers and call it a day! On a more serious note: it's probably the result of applying the Tarkin Doctrine to every ship in the Imperial Navy. Governing through fear of, as you put it, mobile fortresses. There was no consideration for numerous starfighters because one intimidating ship would be enough to quell the local populace. We all know how well that doctrine worked in the end.

I thought the Victory was introduced to engage in capital ship slugging matches alongside the Venator which would be the fleet carrier. They were being developed alongside eachother at least

Did the empire just stick with the acclamator as an assualt ship (seems that way) or was there any limited replacement or proposed replacement?

I would have had an imperial fleet of 1 ISD II, 5 Dreadnaught cruisers, 3 victory class Star destroyers and 2 gladiators, perfect amount of fighters, fighter defend and fire power.

You could totally improve on the venator.. I mean I love the clone wars as much as the next guy but they are kinda... shit. The republic overused and misused them and I would hardly call them a battleship carrier hybrid. They pack to little firepower and are to vulnerable yet you see the republic field around three against dozens of separatist ships. Munificence outgun them and a single lukrehulks carrys more than 5 of them republic fighters aren’t tie defenders. There is now way they are good enough to break those odds this is my only nit pick a both the clone wars tv show and honestly I’m upset not enough people are talking about it. So I have a challenge for you and I get your probably a busy guy and I don’t expect you to do this. But I bet that you can find a way to improve the venator for its inter purpose within the republic fleet. I loved the rest of the video by the way but people over glorify the venator when ships like the lukrehulk are strictly better at both roles
@laisphinto63722 жыл бұрын
thats is why the Victory and Imperator were made because they were better in these aspects especially the ISD. but TCW fanboys swear uo and down how godly the venator is despite we see it only hold up by duct tape of plot against the serious CIS heavy hitters like the providences and especially the lucrehulk

The gladiator was made during the clone wars so maybe the complement was based on larger starfighters that can't fit on racks.
@rivertownproductions5 жыл бұрын
2:25 the Iowa Class is actually longer than the Yamato. But I’m pretty sure Yamato was still bigger when it comes to width and tonnage. (I don’t blame you for thinking Yamato was longer though, just found out recently that Iowa was longer).

I'd love getting to use these in empire at war fall of the republic mod, i am finding i really need more fighters on the republic side considering how the cis seem to be spamming my fleets with droids and wiping out all my pilots early on
@inquisitorgarza3125 жыл бұрын
One would think that the Empire will focus on carriers rather than battleships considering that tie fighters were meant to swarm the enemy while Star destroyers meant to take on other battleships.

@@jonathanryan9946 Actually a storm trooper that rejected Imperial control had never been done before the force awakens unless you link me to a very obscure legends book. I agree legends is better than canon however you guys should at least acknowledge something being canon instead of crying all day about it. I don't like the prequels overall, but I acknowledge them being canon
@jonathanryan99464 жыл бұрын
@@Erolsaurus Kyle Katarn isn't obscure. He is a former Stormtrooper who defected and was the lead of an entire video game franchise. The basis that Cassian Andor, Finn and Kanan ripped off. I do acknowledge canon material, just not Sequel material. Canon has good content from the Clone Wars era until about Empire Strikes Back.

I feel like the Venators hanger space gets a lot of praise, however it seems to be more of a "on paper only" design as the GAR seemed to never have the manpower and equipment to fully stock a Venators airwing
@laisphinto63722 жыл бұрын
the ISDs 72 fighters makes more sense in this size range. the venator sounds like fan fiction,not only do you need so many fighters and pilots but ammunition,fuel,spare parts for every fighter class not to mention that venators also have to carry tanks and troops

Are two Stormtrooper battalions really enough to eat up 88% of the Gladiator's carrying space? I guess you'd need room for their dropships, and hopefully some place for them to chill out while en route
