I watched this as a young kid in the original run in the 80s and then on DVD more recently. Quite simply: Brilliant. Thanks for this excellent summary video.

X Bomber/Star Fleet is definitely something that aged well. I remember having volume 3 of the vhs series growing up, and I had Saturday detention a couple years back and literally sat through the whole detention and watched this entire series in one sitting. I've seen it all the way through about 5 times now

I have this desire to one day see this show remade. But with the same techniques used on the original with only minimal CGI for certain effects.

I loved Star Fleet as a ten-year old. It was released in the UK on DVD in 2009 with some funky extras like a poster and additional materials, so I bought it and watched it with my daughters. Sure, it's a bit wobbly in these days of CGI, but the thing I loved about it was that it had a story arc and wasn't afraid to kill off big characters. Dr Ben's death was so pointless and hollow, but when Dai-X got revenge on Commander Makara it was a massive payoff. As Shiro said, "This is for Dr Ben!" Hell yeah! I also didn't like Thunderbirds because, as you said, it was episodic and had no wider arc, but also because the premise was always to stop the nuclear reactor from exploding or the experimental aeroplane from crashing. As a kid, I want to see the fireworks and Star Fleet provided them. Star Fleet blew things up and killed characters off whereas with the likes of Thunderbirds, you always knew at the start of each episode things were going to be A-okay by the end. Oh, and I also bought the Paul Bliss soundtrack on CD when the 2009 DVD came out. Whatever the original Japanese soundtrack was, it couldn't possibly have been as on-point.

This show made a big impact on me and my brothers when it aired in NewZealand around 1985. I filled my scrapbooks with drawings of Dai-X. I found the dvd set in a video store about 5 years ago and marathoned through it. The first few episodes were very impressive, but many episodes were somewhat uneventful. Glad I got a chance to see it again after all these years, but I don't think it has as much replay value as the Gerry Anderson shows like TerraHawks.

What little I've seen of Star Fleet has been hard to stomach, because I am a huge fan of the original Bow Wow music, possibly the hardest rocking music ever used in a show aimed at kids. But that's not why I like it. I like it because it kicks ass. I've never heard or seen the dub version but I will admit you make it sound really interesting!

Stingray and Thunderbirds don't hold up??? WHAT??? ...In no way is Starfleet better than Thunderbirds!!! Thunderbirds is vastly more thrilling and entertaining with brilliant models, explosions and puppet deaths ... Sure the Stingray/Thunderbird puppets were limited, but through the high detail and great puppeteering, were hilariously enjoyable to watch... Starfleet - meh!
@Graham_Patch Жыл бұрын
Did you actually pay attention to what was said? He said that the Gerry Anderson shows look good, but don't hold up in the era of home video because of the lack of character development and overarching story throughout the series. He never criticised the models or special effects of Thunderbirds & Stingray.

Really I find myself rolling my eyes when people poo-pooh old tv shows for following what was standard procedure in the days when there was no on-demand/streaming and very few repeats that made it simple for audiences to follow a continuous narrative on an often weekly basis.🤷♂️
