In Macbeth if you take too long to take out the boss, you will reach a big wall, the train will stop, and the boss gear will start to fall onto Fox's tank. it's impossible to dodge it and it is a sure death and fail.

Sector X is my favorite level in Star Fox 64. Either go to Macbeth by defeating Spyborg before Slippy will help Fox in the boss battle (and get a medal, if Peppy and Falco do live from the previous level, Fortuna) or don't let Peppy die by enemies in Sector X. Defeating Spyborg before Slippy will disappear is not too hard to do. Or use the left path and shoot down enemy fighters and the four warp gates. Smart bombs are also good to destroy the enemies on the screen as well as the warp gates to open them to go through it to access to Sector Z.

no, but you can clearly tell you screwed something up by the more bittersweet-sounding music and the less positive dialogue from you and your wingmen. that, and you are also forced into an easier route and can't get the best ending possible. so like, you can still save the lylat system, but you will only be able to get to bolse and thus only fight a robot duplicate of andross. i'd like to imagine andross has several "lairs" on venom that he makes sure to look like his own, but are populated with decoys.

The endings on Fortuna, Katina, and Sector Z in this video have different music when the mission ends, giving you a sense of "failure". You will also see "Mission Complete" on screen, as opposed to seeing "Mission Accomplished" when you have a more desirable outcome.

I’m pretty sure there’s no missions like that but there is a mode that, if unlocked, will allow you to play versus on foot.
