Just to clear up a bit of confusion, when I said people "hate it because it's Star Fox", I wasn't referring to not enjoying, or even disliking the game. I was referring to continuing to be angry at it all of these years later. Do you really HATE every game you didn't like? Do you still talk about every game you didn't care for 20 years later? That's what I'm talking about. I totally understand if someone still wouldn't like it even if it were Dinosaur Planet, but people wouldn't talk about how much they still hate it all of these years later if it were a new IP. That's what I was getting at, I guess I should have been more clear on that.
@Rpground5 жыл бұрын
Personally, it's because you get just a slight taste of what a good Star Fox game could of been (like 64) on the gamecube. It's in the game, and with that combined with people expecting a Star Fox game...well, it's like rubbing salt into the wound. People expect a beloved franchise not to deviate too far from their roots, unless it's a spin off coupled with a main game the fans crave. Just look at how well Diablo Immortal went down. If that was announced with D4, no where NEAR as much hate it has now.

Hey! A bit of info about how the dinosaur language works: It's basically just a cipher of English. It's all explained in the manual (which I no longer own), but basically you take normal English words and switch the letters to corresponding other letters and then you have Dinosaur words. I always had a love hate relationship with the game. I can respect the original intention, and it never bothered me the way that they handled the gameplay since it was actually the first star fox game I played, but the game was admittedly pretty long winded. Compare it to Majora’s mask or Wind Waker, the two 3D Zelda games released closest to its release, and you see the difference in style. Majora’s mask also has a difficulty spike in the dungeons and it can stretch it out Great Bay and Ikana Canyon compared to the first two areas, but the real bulk of that game was the side quests that developed the game world. Meanwhile, Wind Waker was long because of the repeated sailing, which was seen as a detriment at the time, but the dungeons were still straightforward and the puzzles were pretty simple. Meanwhile, this game has you go through the same two dungeons twice, they’re not that engaging either way, there’s mandatory button mashing in Lightfoot village (my worst nightmare as a kid), and the bosses really aren’t that good aside from the Red Eye king. I don’t consider this a bad game, but I feel like there could’ve been a lot more polish if the development, like you said, wasn’t probably effected by the Microsoft merger.
@Gunmageprime055 жыл бұрын
I hated going through the water shrine so much, myself.
@abloogywoogywoo5 жыл бұрын
Naturally, Majora's Mask is a direct-sequel to Ocarina, so the game developers are assuming you've played Ocarina first, and mastered it, before picking it up. Essentially, the dungeons and timer are putting veteran players to the test, to see if you can weld Link's arsenal to make him one of the most versatile heroes in the series ever (bar Breath of the Wild) and I love the game for that. Likewise, anticipate BotW 2 being a much harder game if it comes out on Switch (and not another next-gen console)
@trueblueryu57135 жыл бұрын
abloogywoogywoo well what I meant was more that Woodfall and even Snowhead aren’t really hard for first time players, but the amount of stuff you have to do in Great Bay and Ikana Canyon is a significant jump up from those two, not so much that the game itself is inherently hard
@abloogywoogywoo5 жыл бұрын
@@trueblueryu5713 Woodfall is meant to ease-you-in, but Snowhead is definitely where the game stops "guiding you by the hand". I can breeze it today no problem, (and do the Gilded Sword side-quest in the same cycle no problem either.) But first-time? Without a guide? Going through all the floors? Trying to find the fairies in cryptic places? Controlling Goron Link for the first time in tight-areas/on-tracks? Trying to raise the pillar? Very challenging, and it only gets harder from there. My only disappointment was there was no proper 5th dungeon on the Moon. And no, to anyone reading, that shit on the 3DS doesn't count, goddamn that awful Zora section. >:C

I actually think Starfox Adventures could have worked even with the Starfox title if this was a spinoff series. Look at games like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Hyrule Warriors. Nobody looked at those games and assumed that they represented the future of the series. Granted, that's possibly because they had recently had mainline games released or announced, but imagine if you didn't play as Fox. Have General Pepper send a mercenary to Dinosaur Planet and get some name drops along the way. Or maybe game companies should learn the old adage of "if it ain't broke, don't shoehorn it in to an existing franchise".
@ressljs5 жыл бұрын
I think your reference to mainline games is really a big part of why Star Fox fans are upset with this game (I'm not really in that camp myself). Those other games you mentioned had their mainline franchise continue. What have we gotten in Star Fox since Adventures: Assault which has you mostly a foot soldier, a strategy game on the DS, a carbon copy of 64 on the 3DS, and a mutilated version of 64 on the Wii U. So for fans of the franchise, they're only being offered shameless 64 remakes or titles that are Star Fox in name only. As someone who barely played 64 in the day and had this as my first Starfox game, I was more upset that the game felt half-arsed and clunky than the game not being a TRUE Starfox game. However, Rad brought up an interesting point regarding branding and theming - if Scales copout was intentional and the boss was supposed to be a Krozoa or Andross, there aren't enough shmup sections where they player would be expected to be good enough to beat the final boss. Moreso, the Starfox sections were more tacked on and out of place than the reused assets - but if those sections were redone as free-roam sections on the skies of the planet like Drakengard, you could throw in airborne dinosaur enemies and have sections where Krystal could join in on a pterodactyl. As for Miyamoto, his hands-off approach with Starfox didn't work, but for Metroid Prime in a similar boat, his attention to detail may have saved the game in which all of Retro's games after Akklaim were canned, and fans weren't happy with the FPS angle. But, having all of the rooms interconnected with powerups made Prime still identifiable as a Metroid game, despite missing powerups like the speed booster. You can't say the same for Federation Force which was trying to be a competitor for a local co-op FPS trend, and ALTHOUGH IT HAD SOME GOOD IDEAS, using Metroid lore to make Samus second fiddle doesn't have the same charm. Now, making an RTS where space pirates, the federation, and phaaze would have skirmishes in a campaign, that has potential as never being done that would suit a touchscreen handheld. But, as Kid Icarus proved on the 3DS, it's an uphill battle to put a traditional shooter on a DS due to the cramped layout, as even Prime Hunters had some growing pains. Would Federation Force have worked better as an F-Zero spinoff where we see Falcon as a bounty hunter? Maybe. Would having more crossover potential besides Smash with F-Zero, Starfox, and Metroid be able to temper expectations when Nintendo wants to experiment with a franchise? Going with how badly Starfox Command was handled, probably not. And given how Starfox forgot Dinosaur Planet after Assault, there probably wasn't too much potential to begin with.

The “never beat this as a kid” part reminded me of when I had similar issues in the original Kingdom Hearts. Oddly enough, I needed serious help with the Stealth Sneak, but there was enough after that kid me could do that I could then make it to Hollow Bastion in Expert.

Honestly, it saddens me that this game was rushed. I recall hearing something about the Scales battle a long time ago. Appearantly the Spellstones were supposed to save Krystal and the Krazoa Spirits the planets. So, the Scales battle would've been Fox and Krystal againts Scales, however that was sadly scrapped due to time reasons...

I don't hate Star Fox Adventures because it's not a Star Fox game. In fact, I thought the game looked cool and was excited to play it. No, I hate it because I honestly don't think it's a very good game. This was supposed to be Rare's take on Zelda, and should've been amazing. But towards the second half, I was questioning whether I liked it or not. And then the ending sequence cemented my opinion, with the out-of-nowhere villain switcheroo, and worst of all, Krystal's not-role in it. I went through the game expecting some cool stuff with her once I rescued her, but instead she just ineffectively shoots Andross with her staff, and Fox is all "this is embarassing" and runs off to his arwing to finish the job himself. That sequence is proof that people like Krystal for her looks more than anything, by the way.

That the furries find Krystal appealing, isn't really a measure of what makes a game good or bad, nor does it work to its merit. The thing about Federation Force not being talked badly about this day is...that nobody actually talks about Federation Force at all period. As for me...ever since i had the Zelda Wind Waker + Ocarina of Time Bonus Disc launch edition of the GameCube, and saw StarFox Adventures on the HotClips trailer compilation of it, i wanted it. I thought "holy shit StarFox but ZELDA?! WHERE CAN I GET THIS?!" back in the olden days. However, much like the name of the publisher, the game itself was surprisingly RARE in our country, and i couldn't find it for at least a DECADE. Afterwards i played through it, finally, and liked it up until the first half of the game. Then...then came all the backtracking, and back backtracking and UGH, the whole game just seemed to fall apart. Is it really THAT bad? Not really...is it good? Not really either. It's MEDIOCRE...but let's be honest, after StarFox 64...nobody would settle for mediocre.

The thing with Starfox fans is, being a Starfox Fan is one of the most suffering beings one can be in a fandom. At least with F-Zero and Pikmin and other games like that, you have the prospect of a new game to look forward to. Starfox is a series with the following history of games: 1) Starfox 2) A cancelled sequel that only technically saw an official release almost 25 years afterwards, and even then, it wasn't actually finished. They just polished the Beta build to look presentable enough. 3) A remake of Starfox 4) A game that was only a Starfox game for legal reasons 5) An actual sequel... That half of the levels of are remakes of levels from the Remake of Starfox... 6) Another sequel with a crappy control scheme, on a console that was not designed for a game with that playstyle. 7) A remake of the remake of Starfox 8) Another remake of the remake of Starfox, but with crappy controls. Face facts, if Pikmin gets a new game, it'll be a brand new thing, if F-Zero gets a new game, it'll be brand new. All Starfox fans have to look forward to is yet another fucking remake of Starfox 64...

Originally, in Dinosaur Planet, there would've been a fight against a Kamerian Dragon, the resurrected god of the dinosaurs (or against his heart, I dunno), and one you beat him, he melts down in pretty gruesome detail for the N64, blood drops and all! Maybe that's what they would possibly refer to as "Blood" for the T rating, but when it didn't make the cut, they just kinda forgot about it.

This was actually the second story-based game I ever played; my sister and I got a gamecube around 6/7-ish, and we simply didn't know anything about gaming at all. We knew tetris, super mario land 2 (and as little children didn't even knew that a super mario land 1 existed) and frogger. that was it. And with that perspective, the game was - to put it simply - awesome. I remember years later, seeing Star Fox Command in a store, and since I wasn't really into the franchise, I only knew it existed as a larger brand from smash bros. I had no idea how actuall Star Fox gameplay was suppose to look like and that the game was based around the aircraft shooting rather than the land exploration, so you can imagine my disappointment. So with that perspective, I can absolutely confirm that I personally view this game as a timeless classic with beautiful design that still stuns me to this day, and if it weren't a Star Fox game, I'd bet my kidney that this would be the general consens on the game.
@finsterhund5 жыл бұрын
This is the first time I've actually seen someone talk about this game in depth beyond "it's Starfox but NOT." Was very interesting to see. I'm definitely of the belief that it should have stayed Dinosaur Planet too. I remember I visited a friend who had this game and I hated it because there weren't the flying sections (as much) like I expected and I really hated Krystal for being a bland sexualized character who served no real purpose. A sentiment that became worse as I saw how popular she was online. Years later I felt pretty bad after finding out how retooled this game actually was because she was originally going to be the protagonist and there was so much more to her from what we saw in the original footage. I definitely think the majority of the hate this game gets is hate for it being a Starfox game too. It's become popular to hate it because of a few youtubers who got popular content surrounding it as well. This happens a lot because of youtube unfortunately. People who have never actually played it and therefore have never actually formed their own opinions on it will just copycat what other people have said. "Just because it's not what you want doesn't mean it's inherently a bad game" Damn the Oddworld fans who have an extreme hatred for Heart of Darkness need to hear this tbh. That's a similar sentiment to this. They go into it expecting it to be identical to Oddysee then get all nasty because, surprise, it might be a similar game, but it isn't. The hatedom for HoD is significantly less prominent than for this game I think but it's the same principal. You can't go into a game expecting it to be the same as a different one. And Starfox Adventures ended up bearing the brunt of that because of how it was never meant to be a Starfox game in the first place. It was fighting an uphill battle right from the start.

For the record: people were ticked about Federation force because of the disrespect shown to Samus's character in Other M. And we were hoping for a game to win back our approval and trust. Then: "KOO KOO KACHO! I KNOW YOU LOVE THE DARK AMBIANCE THAT'S AN ICONIC AND INTEGRAL PART OF THE FRANCHISE! GUESS WHAT? WE TOOK THAT OUT AND MADE IT A CHIBI MULTIPLAYER GAME!" Exactly. I didn't hate on federation force because it was a different type of game. it was because it's timing after other m where the series was in a very critical nearly dead state as is and really needed a new game that would bring things back on track(which we would eventually get in the form of samus returns but at the time there was nothing down the line we could know about) combined with the fact that it completely disrespected the tone and overall feel of the series made it a complete "WTF WERE THEY THINKING!?" style shitstorm of a game.
