Star Fox Command is the Zelda 2 of the Star Fox franchise. I will not explain further.

interesting enough Imamura just confirmed this month the Marcus ending was indeed intended to be the canon ending. Also interesting enough some of the devs once said in a interview that originally they had planned on doing a sequel to Command for the launch of the 3DS but they wouldn't have enough dev time to do it right, which is why they pivoted to doing a StarFox Prequel with James before finally pivoting to simply remaking SF64 for the 3DS

Honestly, I think this might be my favorite game in the series as I love crazy fanfics and having lots of playable characters. Helps that I played it in short bursts over a long time as well.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 10 ай бұрын
Playing it in short bursts probably is the ideal way to play. It doesn't solve every issue, but it definitely makes everything more digestible. I love to hear that this is someone's favorite though. I meant it early on that I always love to hear from people who might think Adventures is there favorite for example despite my own personal gripes. Even when I'm critical of something, I hope it always come off as a desire for more because I love games so much. With Command, I genuinely had a very good time for a decent chunk of the game too.

When I got a hold of this game, I was deep in my fanfic consumption years, so I ate this soap opera stuff right up. I would power through every branch just to see all these story beats play out. It makes me kinda sad that I can't handle playing it anymore these days because of how I have less patience for the tedium, and the fact that 90% of the dialogue is about relationship issues doesn't entertain like it once did. Still, I enjoyed my time with it back then, and I maintain that they can still do stuff with this universe. Having a bunch of characters spread across a bunch of planets who have their own things going on has more potential than Nintendo will ever see.

I actually think you touched on a cool possibility. Have a Star Fox story where the crew is split and operating around the Lylat System separate from one another could be an incredible story with the potential to really highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each individual

If you go an search interviews from imumura, the writter and artist of the series. He'll actually explain that command was originally going to be a more linear story but the head of q games wanted the game to have branching paths. This is where things went wrong narrativly as a more linear story would have resulted in a less messy narrative and probably prevent the epilog we see at the start. Gameplay wise their mistake was making it for the DC. I honestly think this game could have been even better if it took more elements from star fox 2 such as the walker sections but on foot. The walker sections add variety to the gameplay and kept things fresh. It being made and released on the wii would have done so much better as evident by how the concole itself over shadowed it by how revolutionary it was. Point at the tv to where you want to send your pilots to, a bomb, or aim with it while flying or on foot. (Also i recently learned that aiming with motion controls on the wii was too good that for the call of duty games had to make separate servers because duel stick players were just getting crushed). Now that I mentioned that I'm starting to double down on that idea because this would have been a great way to demonstrate the wiis hardware. The only reason we didn't get a new sf game during the wii era was because they couldn't come up with a new gimmick. If they waited on making the new sf game after assault, if they waited for the wii then they could have made it for the wii. Now if they were really persistent about alternative routes then just do it like the original sf game. There are three routes but they don't crisscross so we could still have a stronger narrative. Heck have each path actually sort of continue the narrative sort of like 64 with star wolf. The easy route is the beginning and the hard route is the end.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 10 ай бұрын
You make a great point about the Wii. Also, I played A TON of shooters during this time but not mostly on PC, but I can say for certain that I played some Call of Duty on Wii because the motion controls were actually really fun. What's interesting though is that Star Fox didn't ever receive anything for the Wii. You kind of come up with your own thoughts and ideas immediately and if Nintendo really wanted Star Fox to be the "explore technical options" proof of concept title then having it on the Wii to explore motion would've made perfect sense. Star Fox as a series fascinates me so much because it's an interesting relationship where the creators and the players seemingly enjoy it for completely opposite reasons and have wildly different desires for it's future.

@@Zerbraxi It's interesting at best and hair pulling at worst. The GIMMICK first approach is really harming the series for its gameplay as well as if we get one or not. If they can't find a unique gimmick to make a starfox game with then there won't be one for that console generation. You can find interviews of miyamoto about the serise, sf zero and why there wasn't one for wii and it's basically because of what I mentioned before. It's just so annoying, it doesn't help that command has written the series into a corner with no way out

I think the most shocking thing about hearing a critique of star fox command is finding that people care about star fox writing or continuity
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 3 ай бұрын
I probably wouldn't care if they didn't create a continuity to follow, only to kinda just tease around it for so long. I can't say I care THAT strongly, but if they want to make a canon across the games then I'll naturally be invested in that to some degree.

For as flawed as the Adventures trilogy (Adventures, Assault, and Command) is, I at least give it credit for trying to move the narrative of Star Fox forward. Every SF game made in house at Nintendo seems content with retelling the same damn story from the SNES game...
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 6 ай бұрын
Yeah...I think with 64 nobody really cared because so much was added and expanded that it truly does feel like it's own experience rather than a copy of the SNES narrative. Considering now though that we have FOUR titles telling basically the same story, SNES -> 64 -> 643D -> Zero...yeah, I totally agree that at least Adventures, Assault, & Command were adding to the plot. Well...except nothing in Command is canon which kinda sucks :(

This was a really cool deep dive on this game. I'm more of a fair weather Star Fox fan who grew up playing the SNES original and then 64. Without playing the 2 on the GameCube (though I knew of Adventures) I went into this one not knowing what to expect. Overall, I really liked it. The thrill of seeking out a new ending is real. A lot of the endings do catch you off guard but, like you said in your video, you really do get a feel for the game and it gets pretty fun to play. I totally agree with the "trim the fat" part you said. It REALLY sucks to pick different choices and get a similar ending after playing the same levels. Thanks for the video! I really enjoyed it!

I feel like Command should've been an all-out huge budget Wii game, not a cheap DS game. It's also a crime for a Star Fox game to not have traditional voice acting, like, it's what the franchise is partly known for.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 2 ай бұрын
The voice acting is a tough one. Me personally, I still regularly quote Star Fox 64 on a weekly basis....still...after all these years. At the same time, I've had people comment on my videos about how much they miss the original gibberish. I kinda get it. I like the Banjo Kazooie gibberish for example. I think the VA is one where it'll never make everyone happy so I'm kinda cool with them bouncing between the 2. The fact we never got a Wii Star Fox is a legit crime though. Sin & Punishment Star Successor showed just how well it could've worked. That game is so good. I need to cover it...

I watched a video about Star Fox Comman and..... Let's just say I agree with what you're saying about this game. Well I didn't understand the story in the game itself either. And the ending, which opens with the very first scene showing Crystal's development as, I don't know.... A girl with a grudge against a guy, either forgiving or running away. And man, I didn't really like that kind of plot development. And the very last ending, which I opened and thus completed the passage on the original DSi, is the one in which Fox decides to temporarily disband the team, returns to Sauria to Krystal and after some time appears a child named Marcus, who in the future will form a new team. Yes, of course, for some people it will seem that the ending is good, but slightly incomprehensible. But for me personally, the ending with Fox and Krystal's son is the most excellent of all 9^^"

@@Zerbraxi That's awesome! I certainly enjoyed them and I'm sure you will too! They have a button press mechanic to increase damage of attacks or go decrease incoming damage or counterattack. There's even a system for special moves, which also require timed button presses, wherein you can reduce the cost of the moves but removes any prompts and slowdown. It's a really cool risk and reward mechanic. Superstar saga (the first game) can be a lot of fun, the battles are interesting, though they can get repetitive. If I could suggest another game. Wild Guns for the SNES is an amazing (and short) game! It's a ton of fun and I would highly recommend it whether or not a video is made on it.

3:13 Super late to this video for giving any recommendations, BUT... Solatorobo: Red the Hunter is a personal favorite of mine for the DS. The gameplay is a bit simple, but the characters are great, and the story is also very interesting. It's a part of the "Little Tail Bronx" series, and is a sequel of sorts to Tail Concerto for the PS1. (It also has a planned trilogy of prequel games under the series title of Fuga: Melodies of Steel. The first two games in this sub-series have already been released. The Fuga games are unlike the PS1 and DS games though as they are turn-based RPGs instead of being 3D platformer-ish.)

I feel the first ending was badly written to incentivize the player to get the other endings. While I feel it was written in the visual novel tradition (with some joke and messed up endings), some are just plain bad, not in the sense they're bad endings, but badly written endings.

@@Zerbraxiwell here is an interesting perspective on the game that I don't think you talked about. None of the endings are canon but the prolog is or at least according to the devs that the next game would probably start in the middle of command or just use the prolog as a jumping off point. Sounds bad at first but when you think about it, this sequel would technically be a RE DO of Command. This would be a golden opportunity to rewrite the story, have the anglars have a presences and not an after thought. Have the characters act more like themselves and have a play style that isn't repetitive. Heck it's been almost 18 years since command came out, they would need to recap the players or rather, re write the prolog to work with the gameplay and story they want to tell. (Also Zero isn't a reboot, its a reimagining and coexist along with 64 and the snes game).

The game is cheesy as hell but, I still can't help but like it, even the bad endings, especially the bad endings. Also any time you can play Panther, is a highlight, just 1 shotting most enemies. Just don't marathon it, and play it a little by little, and it's much more digestible experience. Besides it'll cause you physical pain if you play it too long, trying to keep the stylist and holding the system, and having at least one button (I used the d-pad) to shoot with, is a bit of an ask.

I think people only started looking on the game negatively in hindsight, anyone playing it when it was new thought it was cool. Especially since it had the best multiplayer and download multi like Mario Kart, so only 1 person had to own the game and 4 could play. That was gold on the band bus.

Also, you were never meant to binge this game. Back in the day and being young, you didn't get games constantly, so the replaying was valuable, and it was a DS game, so it was for picking up and putting down over time.

I never really understood the "you weren't meant to binge it. Sure I'd replay it for 70 hours or whatever, but sometimes design intent doesn't always align with player intent . You're definitely right about the multiplayer. So Zerbraxi, it seems I do care enough about you to the point of looking through all the Nintendo DS library to see if there are notable games to recommend to you and maybe find something I would be interested in as well. Firstly, the DS games I been playing or had played: *Professor Layton The Last Specter, Megaman Star Force, Dragon Quest IX* (Last Specter is a really great point and click puzzle game that its very fun, Megaman Star Force is an awesome Rpg, with a cool story and characters and I love playing it and Dragon Quest was cool at first, but sooner the game became tedious and I dropped) Second, the DS games that have versions/sequels on Switch: *Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, The World Ends With You, Another Code, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective* (If I would play any of these I would do it on Switch to be honest, the first two are Rpgs and the latter two are puzzle/adventure games. Another Code will release in January) Next, the core RPG DS games that I have been looking for quite a while: *Soma Bringer, Lunar Knights, Glory of Heracles, Fossil Fighters* (I don't know much about these games other than Lunar Knights have ties with Megaman Star Force and Fossil Fighters is a Pokemon-Like game, they seem to be good games by the looks) Lastly, the miscellanious ones that I found: *Okamiden, Custom Robo Arena, Drawn to Life games, Monster Rancher DS* (Okamiden is the sequel of the high aclaimed Okami game that I never played but it looks really cool, Drawn to Life and its sequel are said to have one of the most tragic game stories and the others are Develop and Fighting games that have Pokemon-like elements as well) Thats a lot right? Maybe some of these games will interest you, like some of them do for me.

Wow!! This is so awesome. Thank you so much. I have played DQ9 and absolutely adore it. if it's an RPG with a class system and weird unlock methods for those classes then I am all in. I've always wanted to jump into the Professor Layton series proper, but just never took the plunge yet for some reason. I added The Last Specter to my backlog list over on backloggd.com so I hope to get to that next year. I was looking to add Star Force, which is a subseries I didn't even know existed despite played over 20+ MegaMan games, but there seem to be a ton of Star Force titles. Any particular one I should go with? I just looked at DQ Monsters and it looks super cute and fun. Will definitely wanna play that one. TWEWY is a game that I have played before and is probably top 3 DS games for me so far. Quick story, years ago when it first came out I somehow stumbled upon some of its music online. Specifically Calling and Twister were the exact songs I remember hearing. I liked the songs so much that I got up, went to a local Gamestop and bought the game right away and fell in love. I never finished Another Code, called Trace Memory in the US here, but I played it at a friends house years ago because he didn't like the game and I thought I'd try it. I LOVED it and am SUPER excited for the remakes coming out. Ghost Trick has been on my list for YEARS and I really need to just play it. Thanks for reminding me! I remember playing a small portion of Okamiden but I honestly don't remember anything of it so I should try that again because Okami is wonderful. Never played any of the Custom Robo's but they look fun. I'll definitely add this one too. I've never heard of Drawn to Life but it looks super creative. Also adding that! Monster Rancher as well. Thank you SOO much for putting so much effort into this. I really appreciate it. Hopefully we both find some awesome games from this.

@@Zerbraxi You're welcome my guy, the DS library sure is very intriguing, I dare say that it might be better than the Gamecube and the Wii, but I can't say for certain. Answering you about Star Force, I went with the first game and the Leo Version. The version you choose you will not matter until very late in the game and all that does is changing a battle transformation, items and a boss, so you can go with whatever version you want, but start with Star Force 1 like me (I haven't played the other games yet), the beginning of the game is somewhat slow but it becomes very satisfying not too long after. Also I saw people commenting about the core Sonic games, but a very hidden gem that I recommend is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, it is a minigame collection sure, but it has a very cool adventure mode where we play as Mario and Sonic and travel the islands, gather their friends and do unique challenges, I really like that game. Overall, thanks for commenting about that huge list I made, those games really got me very curious when I looked them and I hope the you find a lot of good games to play and have Happy Holidays!

Not 5 minutes in and this man is bashing Spirit Tracks? I thought Phantom Hourglass was the low hanging fruit, can we just stick with that, leave my baby alone? Anyways, "Trim the fat" sounds about right, and repetition is a part of that. My first impression of the game was "Why is every single level a fog of war mission on a time limit with a risk of instant failure?" That literally never went away because, well, EVERY SINGLE LEVEL is a fog of war mission on a time limit with a risk of instant failure. The missiles and motherships weren't fun for me the first time, why would they be the 56th? It reminds me of Metroid Prime Hunters where you fight the same 2 already tedious bosses 4 times each. Leon is now my greatest enemy. I feel like he was specifically designed to be as bad as possible within the rules of the game. I mean what's the point of having the highest health if you can't destroy the missile before it reaches the Great Fox or the time limit runs out? It's fascinating really, the final Star Wolf mission has such a diverse range of playstyles. I would've loved it more if I could treat Leon's bad playstyle like bad units in a Fire Emblem title. Just that little bit extra support you know? Unfortunately Command isn't built like that. I need Leon to be good because Wolf can't be everywhere at once. I can't fix the story in a rant that took me a couple minutes to type, but for gameplay, my thoughts are: Give the Great Fox hit points. Say, 3. A missile deals 2 damage each, enemies deal 1 per turn. Replace some motherships with a simple pyramid base to shoot like the building already on the map, just to have less motherships, and stop making them oneshot you. And hey look at that, it's now similar to Star Fox 2 with a home base that can take a hit, different base types, and no oneshots. Restrict time limits and fog of war to some maps, not literally every map. Also make the arwing invincible for a couple seconds at the start of a battle because enemies can spawn into you. I really do hope the devs of Command are doing well. They seem like good people and I would still trust them with another Star Fox title. I just want the criticism to be understood, with respect. Oh, and regarding Krystal. All I can say for liking her is she's as good in Assault as any of the others in Star Fox 64. I agree with everything said against her. It's just that she fits so naturally with the team, and saying "she'd fit right in as a member of Team Star Fox in Lylat Wars" is some of the best praise I can give a character in anything. She isn't treated differently from Falco or Slippy for better or worse, and that's cool.

LOL, bagging on Spirit Tracks is one of my 3 hobbies in life. I'm a very exciting person. Ya Leon is such a fun playstyle but functionally, is pretty weak and unusable in most occasions. However, shout out to Panther for actually being completely nuts! I appreciate the effort you put into trying to fix some of the issues that we both seem to share with Command. However, I think at some point it's more fruitful to just take a step back and ask if the core concept itself is genuinely good or not. It might've sounded fun, and to be fair some people do legit enjoy Command, but personally I wonder if even my attempts to improve Command is just doing my best to work with what I have rather than just redesign from the ground up which is probably what is needed. I'm so glad you made this comment about the devs. It's super important to remember that not every idea is good and not every piece of art is entertaining, but the passion and drive behind that creative process is critical and it often takes a ton of mistakes and failures in order to make something truly special. I think it's important as the customer that we criticize effectively while still cultivating the benefits of the creative process. I guess I never looked at Krystal quite like that. It's a good point.
