Starlink is honestly a lot more fun than you might expect it to be. It seemed like a cheap toys-to-life craze cash-in but it's actually a pretty decent game. I picked up the Switch version in the UK for about £8 last week too, just purely because I thought it'd be neat to have an Arwing figure. I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot if you get the chance.

It went both ways. There were a lot of people who were overly critical of him just because they were upset he said (correctly, I might add) the Grinch Leak was fake and Isaac was an Assist Trophy, and the bitterness that it resulted in led people to write off everything he said as "lucky guesses", denying he ever had any accurate info. The idea that it was all lucky guesses was preposterous, as a lot of his claims were very unsafe and went against what the majority believed. Not just about the Grinch Leak being fake, but many of the characters he said would or wouldn't get in (namely, he didn't fall for any of the 90000 Crash Bandicoot/Geno/Dante traps, didn't go for any of the "new game = Smash character confirmed" bandwagon picks like Tracer and Shantae, and correctly went against the majority by saying we'd get Incineroar instead of Decidueye). Go look at any base roster or DLC prediction, and you're bound to see at least three of the characters I mentioned beforehand. Personally, I think he had legit info for the base game, but throughout the entirety of DLC, he was piggybacking off of other leakers' info. After the Banjo leak from E3 2019 ended up being right, he banked way too hard on a repeat with Master Chief, and it cost him dearly.

I'd never heard of this rumor, but the amount of dedication that had to go into disentangling everything when so much information conflicted, and frankly when so many people were lying, is laudable. I first started following the channel a few years ago for the trivia compilations, but it's come a long way since then.

I’m guessing it’s because his ties to Nintendo would’ve been severed if he admitted it. Now that it’s 5 years out and has no influence anymore they won’t care. To be generous, perhaps he thought it would’ve only gotten a bit of buzz in forums, and then it would die off or he’d admit it as a joke. On the flip side he could’ve used his connections/experience to leverage a joke further than it normally would have for his own ego (or maybe drumming up interest to become an actual game).

When I interviewed for a certain large gaming network KZbin channel (I sadly didn't end up getting the job), part of their process was having me write and record a fake gaming news update video about this exact game to test my capabilities. The idea that it could be real after potentially losing me a career is very funny.

I have reasons to suspect that whatever Retro Studios was working on after Tropical Freeze, it was in development hell and Nintendo/Retro is doing everything they can to cover it up and avoid bad publicity. The Metroid Prime 4 delay was the most significant update on Retro's development status, but it didn't answer the question what exactly have they been working on between 2014 and 2018.

There is very little accountability in reporting in general. Even when they do post a retraction, it’s usually understated and done long after anyone stopped caring. The damage is done, whether they recant their lies later or not. Yeah this was a crazy rumor. It's really nostalgic seeing content creators like SpawnWave in the beginning, because I remember a lot of videos and discussion about this amongst the SpawnCast crew. The early Switch era was such a time. I don't think there's any credibility to journalists mistaking Starlink for Starfox Grand Prix, though. It's entirely possible that some people that are "lying" aren't intentionally doing so. Journalists don't have photographic memory. It's entirely possible one journalist said they saw Grand Prix, confusing it with another game, and forgot they said the wrong title, hence the denial later on. I've had wires crossed when identifying media lots of times.

I had this thought as well! I don't doubt some or many were lying on purpose and, like he said, they'd have plenty of motive to do so. But it is scarily easy to misremember things, especially something you said on accident (hell, sometimes you can flub a sentence big time and never even notice that you did it in the first place) or a mistake you made that was later corrected. I also imagine some of the conflicting sources 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 misremembered it; I've had fascinating conversations with my partner about past events where we remembered it differently, and we each ended up being correct and incorrect about different parts 😅 Memory is super fallible!

Wow. The timing of this! Just yesterday I learned that there were rumors about remakes for “Thousand Year Door” and “F-Zero GX” on the horizon. When I tried to find out more, I discovered that almost all the articles talking about the former came out on or near 4/10, and the latter a month before that. Almost no info or articles to be found afterwards. I skimmed one article, but when I realized it was all just regurgitation with no authoritative follow-ups, I ended the search. If the games come out, great. I’ll see them advertised and pick up a copy. No need to feed degenerate, lazy media sites with views when the end result is whether or not I should wait with anticipation. Great video with some strong takeaways. I’d actually never heard the rumors, but the idea of a space racing game based in the SF universe is intriguing. I know Nintendo said they’d only do another SF or F-Zero game when they had a fresh take/spin on them…and ironically I think combining concepts from both would give us a nice bit of razzle-dazzle.

As soon as I heard Vergeben was involved (years ago), I knew a lot of this had to be illegitimate. The name came up frequently in Smash rumors/leaks, and they were all pretty fake or outrageous. This video reminding me Vergeben had a hand in it told me exactly where this was going lol. Their inability to properly answer questions is nothing new, since Vergeben is just making everything up/bases stuff on other sources and doesn't give direct answers in order to avoid lowering his credibility.

I can't believe the entire gaming journalism sphere got one-guy'd for two years, and over such a not-on-brand game idea. To this day, I have no idea why anyone put stock in those rumors or thought this was a believable idea for a game that Nintendo would make. I guess people were just desperate for a crumb of StarFox anything.

4:19 Wait, the one that made fun of Kotaku for calling Layton an MRA? Also Layton belongs to Level-5 so I thought it belonged to Level-5 at the time. NoA did publish the games outside of Japan (they also published the Yo-Kai Watch series outside of Japan save for the mobile games and the Inazuma Eleven games in Europe, and they handled publishing for a few other localizations of Level-5 games) but not the smartphone ports.
