Well, depending on the continuity. In the SNES and classic continuities, he came back once. In this continuity, it's unknown if he's gone for good or not.

It's implied that the first Andross was either a machine, a clone, or some simulacrum. If you fight his brain in N64, that's the real him, so he died. then resurrected in Adventures, and died again. Since then, there hasn't been a Canon return of Andross. So really he only came back once.

Everything about this sequence rocks. From Andross' unexpected appearance to try and take Fox with him, to James McCloud being a big damn hero, to the slow-motion charge shot, to the Arwing juking and weaving towards the portal exit as fire erupts all around it, to the triumphant score as it emerges just in the nick of time.... Genius. Just genius.

It's difficult to explain how James is able to appear corporeal despite being declared dead. In the original SNES Star Fox, James was caught in an accident that resulted in him being transported to another dimension and never seen again. However in THIS continuity from SF64 onward, James is declared KIA, and Peppy- being the one that survived- confirmed his death to James's son, Fox. There are speculations as to how Andross killed James in a way for his form to still appear in this plain of existence, but nothing has been confirmed; Andross killed James, and that was it. It's also odd that despite being seen by Fox and Andross, James can't be seen or heard by anyone else. Hell, in Star Fox Command during one of the Venom routes involving Fox, Falco, and Dash, James appears as a playable character, but only Fox sees him while Falco and Dash question who he's talking to. My hypothesis is that Andross did an experiment on James that resulted in his death, but caused his spirit or echo to still have a physical presence, and considering his connection to his own son can explain why Fox can see and hear him, and because Andross was personally responsible for James's death, that could also be a reason why he can see him. As for why Peppy can't see James despite being close friends, i can only guess that James simply chooses NOT to let himself be seen by Peppy. As i said, it's difficult to explain it lore wise, and this feels like a plot hole. As for gameplay or story reasons, James is simply an ex machina to bail out Fox from a near death scenario.

@@Fallenslayer1 her telepathy wouldn't be able to see James unless she is more trained and proficient with her telepathy powers, however Krystal would still be able to hear James's voice. The problem is because Krystal has never met James, she wouldn't recognize him. Krystal would only know about James by his reputation in the Cornerian Academy and stories told by Peppy and Fox, and that's about it.

if you think about it this does make allot of sense the previous game when you go and fight andross he is way stronger and your arwing sucks in comparison to these ones so maybe the true ending is that you are locked in an unending battle of continues as James mcloud won't give up so andross is plagued by this forever respawning ghost of rage that is James mcloud this doesn't sound like the first time he has reappeared or been killed by andross so perhaps andross was always aware of your ability to respawn all along : o

My whole life I thought James survived. Why? Because as a kid after I beat the game I thought James’s spirit was what lived on. But then when I played F-Zero....I had the biggest freak out moment. I started jumping up and down going “omg! OMG!!! James is alive! Andross must have sent him to another dimension where he turned human. Crash landed on cpt. Falcons planet and since his arrowing was heavily damaged he decided to turn the ship into a racer and thus the little Wyvern was born. This is what I had always believed to be true. But I never knew if that was confirmed or not. Fox’s dad became a racer for F-Zero. Don’t believe me you can look up James McCloud F-Zero if you’re interested in seeing his father as a human anyway.

In the original it was one hell of mystery. My theory is he was alive. Why? In Assault, during the Aparoid Invasion the Aparoid Queen takes on James' persona, which means somehow during the Aparoid Invasion, the aparoids must have interracted with James, since the Queen only did it with characters who the aparoids were connected with: Pigma, Pepper, Peppy, R.O.B.

Also, Peppy and ROB know what Aparoids are, so they were there with James when that sole Aparoid attacked the Cornerian fleet. That is how the queen was able to get James's persona.

They aren't following it very seriously. I think they are throwing things at the wall and seeing what works. In Smash Bros Ultimate, there are hidden conversations with Krystal and Panther and the entire voice acting crew of Assault. They also know Zero didn't go over so well. So, I think the next Star Fox could bring back older stuff instead of following a rebooted timeline.

They rebooted the series I think. Krystal is just hanging out on Sauria until further notice, if she even still exists canonically. Andross is a warlock scientists dude, so who knows. If Nintendo now considers Star Fox 2 canon, Fay the dog and Miyu the lynx may become a part of the team. But I think they know fans miss Krystal, and she is still an assist trophy in Smash, so she'll be back. I hope Star Fox gets it together soon. I still love it, but the Internet seems to hate it more each new game, and it is true there's a ton more they could do with it that they just never do.

My only problem with this game is that its over dependence on the wii u pad gimmick to do so many things that could have just been done on the tv and how some of the levels were changed from starfox 64 would not have minded if the level with stealth started out as the 64 one up until you killed the boss then changed to be the level they gave us i actually think it would have been fun first you stealthy sneak in and deal with one of the enemies put in charge of the base and then you stealth your way through destroying the base.

@King K. Rool Of course everyone only quotes 64, because everyone pretends 64 is the only remotely good Star Fox game. I mean yes it is a very good game with classic lines, but still. Assault's memorable moments come more from what kind of situations are happening, rather than the exact things the characters say. For example, Pepper begging Fox to kill him when the Aparoids take control of his body. Wolf somewhat reluctantly giving his sworn enemy life advice in order to defeat the Aparoids. Peppy sacrificing himself to get his team through the Aparoid shield (even though they wimp out by having him live).

I think this was an incredibly underrated game. Sure it could've been better. Sure, it could have been an effective 'Starfox Adventures 2' in gameplay style if they ended up short of further ideas. But online Influencers that spout their entitled ''-ve truths'' just to sound 'Objective & educated' honestly need to live a little and not take themselves so seriously. This game *is* quirky & fun. @@Theagentofchaos-r5q Fine. The gameplay is broken as hell. While I appreciate the ambition, it did not work. The missions were not well laid out, it was the bad kind of repetitive, wonky camera angles, music was okay but they needed a better program if they couldn't get an orchestra like they did for SF Assault (which is underrated as hell by the way). The only thing that was good was its story. It had a good reimagining of Star Fox 64. The voice acting was also pretty solid too. But even then that's sort of a problem in itself. Why? Because the gameplay needs to be on par with a story that solid. So it's bad not only because of the design, but it's also bad in principle.
