Yeah, when there's a stupidly easy solution that doesn't alienate most fans, I don't think deeming everyone who doesn't click with the controls as being bad at the game is very necessary. Liking the controls, totally fine, but going "If you're good you'll have no problems", which implies that you're bad at the game if you do have problems, is I think uncalled for. Just a bit.

Still one of your best videos. Probably the only video that actually made a satisfying explanation on the "Star Fox Zero is pretty much Star Fox 64 2.0" criticism. Great work

Re: the Krystal thing. I think a lot of the fanboying over her comes down to a few things: 1. Her character concept appeals as something unique compared to the other team members. A mysterious tribal fox girl with psychic powers and a magic staff from a doomed planet who joins the Starfox crew and proves a capable pilot is one with a lot going for it, regardless of the love-interest aspect. (Also she’s a popular furry waifu but, then, so are a lot of the Starfox characters. What can you do?) 2. She was under-utilised in her first game and Command rather did her dirty by turning her arc into a weird soap opera. Fans want to see more from her as a result. 3. She was part of the series’ strange development, being essentially a refugee from Rareware, so I guess there’s the concern Nintendo would feel less attached to her if they decide to just start afresh.

Originally made in mid 2017, this video had much worse game footage. Then this past June, I made this remaster before the 12 days of tgxmas was being planned. Now it's here and I hopefully don't have to deal with people giving me advice on how to improve my videos based on this; a nearly 2 year old video. Tomorrow, back to "new" reviews, with 50% more Sonic and 50% more fighting.

To say that Leon has NO personality isn’t really fair. He does have one, albeit a simple one. He’s a slimy, pompous prick who enjoys antagonizing his foes, to poke for reaction (especially Falco). But his biggest standout trait is how sadistic he is. He’s always making remarks about enjoying his victims’ pain before killing them. It’s especially prevalent in his intro in Star Fox Assault, where he says “He-he… I think I’ll torment you a bit before I cook you!” Also, the animosity between him and Falco has always been one of my favorite character dynamics in the series. The two have a great rivalry with each other, being their respective teams’ most skilled pilot, and both being pretty pompous and egotistical. They’re both out to prove themselves the more skilled pilot, and it eventually grew beyond just a simple rivalry; they fucking hate each other. When Star Fox and Star Wolf have to work together in Assault, Falco and Leon antagonize and threaten each other the most, and you can really feel the heat between them; it feels like they are constantly throwing sideways glances at each other, and are one slip-up away from tearing each other apart. I agree with you that Leon is the most underutilized character, but I disagree with you saying that he has no personality, and is just a nothing character, since he does have traits that make him stand out, and does add to the story through his interactions. All of that being said, I love your reviews, and I really hope you decide to come out of your hiatus in the future, because you are one of the best critics out there

When are we gonna be able to buy TGX merch? I want a shirt that just says "Vestigial". The way you manage to squeeze that word into every review at least twice is priceless. Edit: cathartic should be the second shirt lol

I think if they doubled down on the on-rails shooter aspect, they could revive the series. The problem with the series right now is that every one of them is just a new "gimmick". Starfox N64 was a test for the Rumble Pack. Starfox Adventures wasn't even a Starfox game originally, and became a Zelda clone. Starfox Assault was originally designed to be a 3rd person shooter, not a spaceship on-rails. Even Starfox 64 3D for the 3DS was only made as a tech demo to show off the new 3D/4D (whateveryoucallit) slider mechanic... and then Starfox Zero wanted to show off the capabilities of the Wii U duel screen and just... well, you saw the reception. Every game in the series fails to capitalize on what made the original(s) so great; they focused on a gimmick rather than the core experience. People want a Starfox game. Not just a game that has Starfox in it's title and only borrows ideas of past games. I'll be waiting for the day we get a great entry in the series, and I am hopeful it will happen. Assault was almost perfect, the story was so much deeper than others in the series... it just tried a bit toi hard to be different and it was received poorly. Also, on side note: This is my favorite series of reviews, TGX, I subbed years ago due to it. Good job, if not a wee bit cheesy. XD Side side note: True sequel to Assault, plz. Command didn't count.

@@ProperDev Yes Starfox 1993 was a tech demo, but it's an important tech demo. It opened the possibilities for 3d games, which was huge in the 90's. However 3d is everywhere, so the wow factor is gone. The good news is that arcade space shooters are still a thing in indie games.

Well, it's been 5 years since this video was released. There was Starlink, which had Fox and his pals playing a major role in the story, but that game bombed. Otherwise, no word on a new Star Fox game. On-rails shooters have shown no sign of a revival in mainstream gaming, unlike, say, 3D platformers and arcade racing games. I really like Star Fox, especially SF64. I would be hooked on it for hours when I played it in preschool, although I wasn't that great at it. Star Fox Assault was also pretty rad, and it was the 2nd-best in the franchise. But, now that I've had time to reflect on this series, I wonder if the folks at Nintendo might've been better off choosing a different genre for Star Fox when they first envisioned the series back in the early to mid-1990s. On-rails shooters like Gradius, Xevious, Starblade, etc had already been experiencing a decline in popularity as far back as the first Star Fox game, so Star Fox entered that genre pretty late into that genre's relevance in gaming. That was why Shigeru Miyamoto tried to insist that Star Fox wasn't a shoot-em-up game. He didn't want Star Fox to be defined by a genre whose player base was shrinking. But, that statement only confused folks. If Star Fox wasn't an on-rails shooter, then... What the heck was Star Fox? That was when the house of cards started to shake. That was the question that started the whole identity crisis Star Fox faced, and, unfortunately, the series never quite recovered from that. They tried over and over to move the series away from a declining genre because simply releasing a new on-rails shooter wouldn't sell that well (see Star Fox Zero), but they didn't find the same success that they did with the first 2 titles.

Your ideas about a Star Fox game are brilliant. The 'Mass Effect' game that follows the ending Emperor Anglar you described has so much potential to be the greatest game of all time. I wish nintendo would have the balls to create that, but they did make breath of the wild. It's possible

Honestly, with how you emphasized moral ambiguity, starting from Ending 3 of Command, and having Fox just leave his team to the point he refuses contact. I can't help but fill the gaps and have Fox become an *antagonist* rather than the protagonist. I'm not saying you're implying it or if I want it, since Nintendo would have the writing skills or even the guts to turn Fox into a villain. But what I'm saying is all the pieces you want to place could give Fox a role similar to Azimuth from Rachet and Clank: A Crack in Time or Richter from Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Similar to the former's case, he would join up with any Star Fox teammates but starts to do things that are even less moral than Star Wolf. And someone has to snap him out of it.

Star Fox Zero feels like a Wii U equivalent of an early-era Wii game with its design being held back by a janky, gimmicky controller. NOW HOT TAKE INCOMING I feel like Star Fox as a series outlived its usefulness at this point. The first game got its job done, even if it was nothing more than a really fancy tech demo, and Star Fox 64 was fine update to the formula, but the rest of the games feel forced. The series' basic design isn't really as addictive as Mario or Pokemon, nor it doesn't show any room for any iterations like Metroid or Zelda (they could go full on Rogue Squadron, but I guess that's too risky and expensive). I just can't see a modern Star Fox game working beyond a budget downloadable title, at least a traditional Star Fox game.
