I was OBSESSED with SO the Second Story when it came out on PS1 back when I was younger. And it was mostly because of the progression system of the skills and the way they would combine to unlock specialties, and then the way the specialties could be used for crafting and stuff like that. It was so good. Plus the special town events, stealing from any character on most maps, the super hard hidden dungeon at the end. Damn, that game was good. There was so much to do.

To each their own. I enjoy the voices (especially when looking at SO2 vs SO2 for PSP). The battle system voices are fun (even when shouting over each others) because it reflects the chaos in the battle. More than that, when the relationships start to develop, there are even mentions to their strongest relationships (shouts of agony, sadness, or absolute blazing anger). This...This makes the battle even more immersive. I never found the voicing grating for these reasons; but, also for the music which was always very dynamic and fun.

In first played Star Ocean First Departure when it was released on the psp and I absolutely adored it. While the story and battle system is kind of bare, I love how each character grows, giving them more depth. Another thing that I enjoy about Star Ocean in general, are the PA - Private Actions, giving you the opportunity to get to know your party members a little more. 😊 I'm just hoping they port SO2! That one is my absolute favorite, next to Till The End of Time, and the Last Hope. ❤️ I'm also a fan of the "Tales of" series as well! I have all the games currently available on PS4.

@@Thirteen13551355 It's not a low-quality font. Putting in a super smooth, modern font clashes with the graphical style of pixel art games. Even great indie games made in the modern-day (like Cross Code or Hyper Light Drifter) use pixelated fonts to help blend the text with the visuals.

Protip for new players: You get the Determination skill in the Portmith (the second major town of the game). Put all of your skill points into it early on as it decreases the number of skill points needed to learn the other skills by a massive amount. After determination, pick up Danger Sense, as it pumps your stamina and lets you reduce (or raise) the encounter rate, which is obnoxiously high in this release of the game.

Something you have to mention in your eventual retrospective (looking forward to that!) is how replayable this game is. It is impossible to get all characters in one playthrough, and like Chrono Trigger, it's not that long. The only gripe I have with the first 2 games in regards to item creation,although it's been years since I've played them, is how even at max level, you need to make items repeatedly for it to actually work. Other than that, great games!

Star Ocean: First Departure and Star Ocean: Second Evolution were released within a few months of each other and were meant to provide a sort of congruent experience between playing the first and second games on the PSP. That's why they look and feel identical when it comes to the menus and UI and graphical style.
@TryckSpot5 жыл бұрын
Oh cool. I've never actually played second evolution, never got into the handheld market. Even so, the similarity to the second story from back in '99 is what I was referencing. I like it though, as if its a throw back to the old style with a very close eyes for the details. Looking at the Wikipedia, it's mentioned that first departure used a modified version of the same engine from the second story, so it makes sense
@saynotop2w5 жыл бұрын
It's more nuanced than that. Cooking and art items are valued appropriately and customization are more balanced so you don't make millions in the first hour. Survival skills make more sense in that you'd forage vegetable on the roads, meat in forests, fish on the beach and ores in mountains. The skills are different than SO2, for example, it's immidiately noticable when you do air slash on close range. They retouched the assets so it's not as blurry as tge PSP version. To name a few.

Wanted to play the Star Ocean series for long time since I first saw it somewhere, and then played Star Ocean First Departure when it was released on PSP. A really good one! Especially liked visual style - sprites upon the prerendered backgrounds look cool and pretty, and I liked that the characters have been nicely voice acted as well - a thing that you almost never see on the old-school JRPGs. At first I was a little disappointed in the scale the story takes - for a name Star Ocean I would expect many galaxies and planets to visit - instead we get one or two planets for the whole game. But nonetheless I still enjoyed the story.

Because I don't agree that they are great games. I find them to be generic and "safe". It's basically a series that you can count on being a consistent 7/10, but never something exceptional or truly interesting. That's just how I feel about them, and looking at metacritic scores shows that for the most part these games don't get higher than 8/10 with the exception of Symphonia--which I did think was an awesome game.

I prefer the older 2000s art style since it doesn't clash/conflict with the sprite designs and anime cutscenes. If it means changing the sprites and having a reanimated then maybe. Also they changed the opening and the song which felt even more generic and a bit lazier since they use clips from the FMVs rather make it completely its own FMV. Otherwise it seems like a solid port outside of the weird blurred stuff. I already had a copy of the original PSP so I just ripped it, use the PPSSPP, upscale the rendering resolution to 10x, use Reshade to make it even clearer and sharper and brighten the colors a bit and there you go, a HD version of something I already owned. On top of that I added a PSP shader script to change the aspect ratio to something more akin to a PS1 and one more akin to 4:3. From this, I have the option of making it slightly sharper since it's built on the SO2 engine which was originally made for the PS1. Without it, it would be fullscreen which the pixels doesn't look good to me when bloated out to my Desktop screen size.

Sorry, forgot to include Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, remastered Windwaker, and Harvest Moon 64. It needs some N64 love!

Nice video Mike, I know you worked hard on it. Shame I missed the part of the stream where Chrissy found out you were playing as CAT PEOPLE!!! As you know I bought and downloaded it as soon as I realised what you were working on, I look forward to getting back into it.

Thanks, Rob! Always good to chat with you on the streams. I think Chrissy and I will be playing this game soon on Twitch. She'll like it a lot for sure.

@@ResonantArc Uh oh, I'll ready my eardrums. PS. I especially like that I still have my PSP version as it gives me the one thing lacking from the new version - a manual. I believe I've mentioned once or twice that I miss the days of getting a manual with my games...

The new character portraits are pretty sexy but now they don't match the psp cutscenes and sprites and that's kinda bothering me

Yeah, it's weird to see how different Ronyx in particular looks between the anime scenes and the new portrait. I ended up switching back to the old ones for that reason.

I still haven't played Radiant Historia (another game you recommended). I'll add First Departure to my list as well. Tales of Berseria, The Last Remnant, and Wild Arms 3 are also on the that list. Also Bushido Blade and Gundam Battle Assault 2 if I can find them.

@Seek R Good, another recommendation; I'll move it up my list then.

That is game is available on PSN for PS4 with trophy support in case you didn't know.

@@phunnbaba I am talking remastered not just port the game and add trophies(which were in the game originally anyways).
