Being a member of the Star Alumni Corps and this performance was one of the proudest moments of my life. I wouldn't have missed it for anything in the world! I can retire my marching shoes in peace...Jefri Payne a.k.a. "Jef-dah" - soprano '89

Star won brass that night...

I flew out on Semis just for this performance. I was taught the Star brass technique when I marched for BK in the late 90's and it was always a dream to see the real deal on the field once more. Words can't describe the feeling from the 8th row that night. After all the amplifiers and synth chords that night my ears were ready for some old school power. Thanks Star for bringing it back one more time.

All that volume, from Yamaha Bb horns. Can you imagine the blast wave from 100+ King G bugles? They might have killed somebody.

Star didn't go broke, Bill cook poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into them. They were well funded. The corps folded and became the Broadway hit show, "Blast," when the board for Star decided they wanted to expand out of the DCI arena and get away from the politics that were worsening.
@NerdismOfficial2 жыл бұрын
It wasn’t really that, it was mainly just Jim Mason being pissed that for some reason people didn’t appreciate esoteric and obscure shows in a marching environment that was geared towards the exact opposite. Hence why he was even more pissed when audiences didn’t like the cheesy pandering in 1992’s show.

Man I miss them. Makes you wonder what drum corps would be like if they had stuck around.

Jeffery Bybee probably revolutionary, they were so far ahead of their time and everyone else. Even their old shows look similar to something that would be done today.

Blue Devils would have partners in being perennially disliked, I can tell you that much. Only reason we think of Star so fondly now is because they’re not around anymore.

@1digidude George was such a wonderful human being. Not only did he single-handed revolutionize drill writing and performance, but he prepared you for life as well. I had many in depth conversations with him when I was with Star and he really was a shaping force to so many young people and often hilarious to be around. And boy, did he love Ayn Rand. ,

Best part of 20 years on and George Zingali still matters immensely to this activity... What a genius! 20 years on and Star of Indiana, still matters immensely to this activity. Bill Cook (RIP), George Zingali (RIP) Jim Prime Jr, Jim Mason, Thom Hanum, Dr Len Kruszecki, Don VanDoren, Dennis DeLucia... These are just SOME of the legendary names to have taught this LEGENDARY corps. Add to that, they were a CLASS ACT. Whilst they HAD money, they did not BLOW money. DCI needs Star back!!!

My friend from High School who marched conta 91' and '93 with Star is now a music educator, I am guessing there are quite a few members who went on to be music educators or in music in some capacity. Wouldn't it be awesome if those kids brought back Star, and recruited their fellow Star Alum, and the directors who are still around... I think that would be a great full circle moment... Those kids definitely have music in their soul...

It's the other way around, we have the same corps say as they did. That is an honor and a privilege, that is something I will always hold close to me. When you wish was Star of Indiana's. That is it. We adopted it.

Do people really think they went broke? Their owner (Bill Cook) used to sponsor the DCI broadcast every year on PBS. If anything, people at the time thought they had too much money and bought their way to success. Looking back that was complete BS. True, they were able to bring in top notch instructors and designers, but the kids in the corps worked their butts off just like everybody else. If it weren't for those PBS broadcasts I don't know how I would have ever learned about DCI, and I bet a lot of people feel the same.
@sharibrown45616 жыл бұрын
And Bill Cook created Star out of LOVE for the activity and the kids... people were jealous back then, and it was disgusting the things they said AND apparently STILL continue to spread those lies... Those kids worked their butts off because they loved the activity and BILL, my friend marched Star contra 91' and '93 and hearing his stories was amazing, and I know that those kids went on to be successful in their personal lives far beyond music, and being a part of STAR was a huge part of that...

People criticize the rich when they don't contribute to the community and some criticize them when they do! The rich guy could have done much worst with his money. Thanks to Bill Cook for caring about DCI! I'm glad I had the opportunity to audition on snare for the '96 line and meet some of of the staff. I was especially honored to meet the legend, Dennis DeLucia. That man called my dorm room one early morning to ask if I wanted to play that year but I couldn't overcome some hurtles. It was a great experience and an honor and I wish I could have marched. Nevertheless, since their debut in '85 it was a joy watching that organization make its mark, raise the bar, and leave with a lasting DCI legacy. We need them back!

@DanielRuiz-ho7et2 жыл бұрын
I know I'm replying to a 9 year old troll, but Star... broke? LO fuckin L. They were quite possibly the best funded corps and were criticized as far back as 1985 for being the "best corps money could buy" (which IIRC was initially a joke told by Jim Mason). Hell, they bailed out DCI by not only acquiring the talents of Tom Blair to produce the DCI broadcasts, Bill Cook himself paid for the whole production. For many, MANY years. Because Bill Cook - Star's founder - was a millionaire businessman so he set the corps up as a self-funding business to ensure it's success. So yeah, go kick rocks with your bullshit.
