On this episode of StarTalk Chat Room, we’re taking a deep dive into episodes seven and eight of Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Given that we are currently living in the “Corona-verse,” Neil deGrasse Tyson is joined by video call by his intrepid comic co-host Chuck Nice.
We start with episode seven, “The Search for Intelligent Life on Earth.” You’ll learn about the Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) located in China which has a 500m diameter disc, making it the largest radio telescope in the world. Neil tells us what it was like to film at the telescope itself. Find out why radio waves are the most ideal form of communication across the galaxy. Neil and Chuck ponder if aliens were trying to contact us via radio waves before we invented a way to detect them.
You’ll hear from executive producer Jason Clark to talk about one of his favorite moments from the series. Discover more about the writing process behind Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Then, we explore the intelligent life on Earth that you might have overlooked: bees. Neil explains how you can get a cosmic perspective studying something so close to home.
After the break, we welcome long-time friend of StarTalk, Madame Saturn herself, Carolyn Porco. Episode eight, titled “The Sacrifice of Cassini,” explores the journey of the Cassini space probe’s mission to explore Saturn and its moons. Carolyn was the leader of the Cassini Imaging Team and she takes us inside the control room on one of the most epic journeys of our time. You’ll hear about the overlap Cassini had with the Voyager mission, including Carolyn’s own involvement.
Discover more about the famous “Pale Blue Dot” photo. We look at Carl Sagan’s influence on inspiring the public with scientific information and how Carolyn continued that initiative with Cassini. Lastly, we ponder what the next mission will be and what tantalizing information could be out there awaiting our discovery.

I love the Cosmos show and I could listen to you narrate for hours, sir. I loved hearing about the Mycelial network and needed out due to being a Star Trek fan. And it was just so awe-inspiring to watch the origins of life on our pale blue dot. Then, learning about Kondratyuk; Huygens, and seeing the simulated death of Cassini-Huygens probe...man I got so emotional

I wouldn't say insignificant, because we are significant. But it highlights the wastness of space and our current place in it. The perspective of the blue dot, should render us humble. And should inspire us to do great things. We really should consider working together.

I like what you learned about bees. I keep bees in local traditional longhives and so far you just took a look at the tip of an iceberg that is called the world of bees. They all some what different and have personalities - some are agressive, some are more laid back, some are in a hurry and some move more relaxed, some fly slow with big loads some fast with light loads. They recognize you, they know that you help them and don't want to do them harm. Best way to understand that they are all individuals is to look what hive "guards" do. They all get the job done, but they do it a bit differently.

I totally agree with Neil, this is how i also view the world around us, we may think we our more intelligent than other creatures, we have created technology and machines to depend on but we never have a deep communication with the nature, what if those creatures sees us more powerful than them and the same time more foolish. We are judging other creatures which have more sharper instincts than us according to our standards.

Hi Dr Tyson and dr funny. My name is Robert brown,I have been a star talk subscriber for the last 2 years. I want to ask is it possible for mars to have lost its atmosphere/magnetosphere,ect... When Theois collided with earth to form the moon. The question is when that collision happ end is it possible that it could have caused mars to be decemated by the shockwaves and shrapnel from the collision? Thanks so much for your time and I can't wait to see if this gets answered.
