When I create a villain, that's my favorite way to create one. Almost nobody sees themselves as evil, or even the bad guy. Everyone is the hero of their own story, even if it's merely from their perspective. Hitler saw himself as a savior to Germany, Stalin saw himself as bringing strength and patriotism back to Russia, David Duke sees himself as being a defender of the new delusional underdog - white people, etc. Marvel Comics have their version, their foil to their Dukat (Hitler), who is in many ways just like him... Magneto. However, his mass-murder keeps getting forgiven in that universe for some reason during his redemption arcs. Oh, and need I mention dark hero (dark comedy?) protagonist Dexter? I mean, he's the definition of evil vs. evil... who sees himself as a hero of a faux modesty sort not realizing/caring that his father figure engineered him to be a vigilante living weapon as his final strike against evil, believing himself to be more than a mere final solution weapon of a vigilante. There are also people who are willing to kill and die for narratives they believe in, especially against those who threaten the "truths" they believe in... but those people are just as much victims of liars as the people that they kill.

The thing I appreciate so much with the writing of Dukat is that whether his actions be good or bad, the most important thing is his ego and intense desire to have people admire, love, or praise him. Once he fully breaks mentally with the death of Ziyal and the loss of his status on Cardassia, his desire for love turns to merciless anger and rejection. It feels organic and understandable. We don’t have many villains in media , much less Trek, with that depth and nuance nowadays

The character is an excellent depiction of a Fascist leader, really. Charm, egotism, desire for control, and a bizarrely sideways take on reality (like how he claims he was 'good' for Bajor, and maybe he *was* better than some of the other Prefects, but his rule was still horrific.)

I rank Dukat as the best Star Trek villain. He was evil, but not evil just to be evil. He had his reasons, he had his motivations and experiences. He probably was one of the most realistic characters on the show.

Dukat is very likely my favorite Star Trek villain. Business always picked up when he was a focal point of an episode, a true testament to his writing and Alaimo's ability to act. I just loved the whole alliance between Cardassia and the Dominion and how Dukat played off of Jeffrey Combs especially in their military level encounters with the federation.

It's funny with Dukat because you know he's a villain from the beginning. You know what he's capable of and what he's done. But you still can't help but love him and you're still shocked when he betrays you. Loved it. The Cardassians were why I loved DS9 so much.

Exactly! Very good way to describe dukat. Hes so untrustworthy and manupulates circles around everyone, like garak..ibtend to forgive them both horrible things because of how damn charming they are. Garak at least redeems himself but dukat never does and i like how there could have easily been a turn for dukat toward goodness and redemption but nope, he goes the other way.

The part about Waltz made me recall a gaff on the DS9 documentary What We Left Behind where Nana and Ira were discussing the possibility of having had Kira have a romance with a Cardassian. Nana meant to say "anyone except Dukat." But she accidentally said "anyone except Marc Alaimo."

DS9 is my favorite of the Trek series. I loved all the characters (even the baddies) because they were so well written. Recurring characters like Dukat , Damar and Weyoun had fascinating story arcs. When you put that much effort into the character detail like that the overall story arc is so much better.

Ducat's arc throughout DS9's run is one of the most complicated, varied and nuanced that I've ever seen. The actor AND the writers created this masterpiece of a character. Marc and Andy (Robinson, AKA Garak) brought the entire Cardassian race to life, fleshing out two very different characters whose roots were in the same society. I fully enjoyed them both.

DS9 allowed the periphery characters to grow and develop. Damar went from Dukat's henchman, to a puppet dictator under the Dominion, to a martyred war hero. Weyoun always reminded me of "Mr Scratch" (aka minion of the Devil) from 'The Devil and Daniel Webster'. Slimy backstabber with a silver-forked tongue. Nog was annoying brat who grew up and became a very popular character that did something that even Wesley Crusher couldn't do....graduate Starfleet Academy. Garak, nuff said 😉 Martok went from Gowron's henchman to Chancellor, and adopting Worf into his House. And who didn't cheer for Rom at the end of the series after all of the crap he suffered through? Lastly, even Morn got his chances to shine, without ever having to say a word.

Dukat is my favorite villain in fiction. Full stop. He is SO evil and yet so human (so to speak). Someone like Voldemort, that's not scary. Pure evil for the sake of evil doesn't exist. But a villain as nuanced as Dukat is truly terrifying. That is a person who really could exist. That is a person who has existed, just read a history book. That's what real evil looks like. Someone who, if you had no prior knowledge, would love to have a drink with. Someone who could slaughter millions and rationalize it to the point where he thinks he deserves a statue. Just masterfully done, all around.

You say that theatre actors, such as him, fitted the character better. I agree, but I'd add that the best actors in all of the various series (at least the first four - I got a bit lost after Voyager and I am trying to catch up) are the particularly theatrical ones. It's what makes ST work particularly well. They can sell the technobabble like no "straight to film/tv" actors can, their abilities to be near chameleon-like regarding their characterisations when necessary... I just think they pull it off better. It's only my opinion, of course, and it's not 100% across the board, but imagining for instance (and by far and away not a complete list!) Spock, Picard, Sisko, Dukat, Garek, even Bashir going through extreme changes comes more naturally to me than, say, some of the film star "one offs".

Not really about Dukat, but Alaimo... Marc Alaimo was one of the notable/semi-notable Star Trek actors to have a part in the 1990 movie _Total Recall._ Along with Alaimo, Lycia Naff (Sonya Gomez), Ronny Cox (Captain Jellico), Roy Brocksmith (most memorably the Zakdorn strategama master), and the voice of Robert Picardo (The Doctor), and I wouldn't be surprised there are others I missed...all were in _Total Recall._

DS9 was the best for character development overall. The stationary setting meant all extraneous plot had to come to them. Everything else was day to day life and the relationships of the people who lived there.

I kind of think that Dukat could have been redeemed for his role in the occupation of Bajor. The writing could have easily covered that he was essentially following orders. It's also obvious he loved his daughter, and while I think it's easy to assume he was always telling her what he thought she wanted to hear, I do sometimes think he regrets his past. But what we got was even better. I get why they went the way they did.

The big issue with not giving Dukat a first name is that we kept on wanting to refer to him as "Gul" even when he advanced in rank. Conversely, it does make a whole whack of sense given the backstory since he'd probably shoot any Bajoran that ever used his first name.

In fact, I'd argue that the best-developed recurring "villain" (more anti-villain really) was probably... Admiral Nechayev?

For me, personally, Dukat is the best Star Trek villain. I find the Borg Queen too singular, and while I love Q he isn't straight up evil. Gul Dukat mixes evil and justifying that evil with suave charm and social charisma. His grand ego and lofty ambitions as well as his utilitarianism simply enables him to be ruthless when he needs to be. His care for his family, his apparently genuine wish to preserve peace in the colonies when the Maquis rising breaks out is balanced by his lack of regret for the occupation of Bajor and the millions of deaths it lead to. He always tries to justify it. Gul Dukat never really take responsibility for his own actions, there is always somebody else to blame. He likes to claim the occupation would be worse without him. You do not find Gul Dukat's depth in the Borg Queen or Q or Khaan or any other Star Trek villain. Probably because Gul Dukat was the primary villain for an entire seven seasons.

The character on paper was a risk IMO, not for concept, but his dialogue. His speaks with a theatricality, wearing a mask, and a lesser performer could've easily fallen into pantomime, but Alaimo made that character integral to DS9 as any of the regular cast with masterful turns in many episodes.

Dukat is such an amazing character and topic of discussion due to his complexity. In regards to his crimes as Prefect of Bajor I would argue that his detractors unfairly place the sins of the Cardassian government on Dukat's shoulders. Dukat was an ambitious, arrogant prick to be sure, but he also makes it clear several times over that he did not relish the more unsavory aspects of his job, and even went out of his way to accommodate his wards wherever he could. But of course such accommodation was perceived as weakness by the Resistance, so really he was in an impossible situation. I don't think he was evil so much as he was egotistical, and under similar circumstances a lot of people are not far off.

Dukat was a wonderful villain and the writers never needed to ask him to come back to guest star because the character was so vital to the overall plot. There was no one else that could do it but Mark Alaimo... but Mark kept complaining that "wah wah, no one ever thanks me and tells me good job." And the writers just groan and roll their eyes.

Always thought that Dukat was one of the BEST villains in ALL of Star Trek. Just a pity that the whole "pah-wraith story line" felt like the writers just needed something "patched" to the story to bring a few too many arcs to a close due to the show being scheduled for cancellation and not something WELL thought out like the Dominion war which would have had several moments where Dukat's ending could have taken place.

Little known fact - Dukat disguised himself as a human from Louisiana and used the Orb of Time to go back to 19th century earth to try and have sex with as many of Sisko's ancestors as he could. Unfortunately, he ended up in San Francisco where he was cleaned out by Data in a poker game and unable to make it to Louisiana before the orb brought him back
