Noooooo, you must be delusional to say that. Well shot, exciting, enjoyable.. yes. But cinematography is very much hiding that there is not a lot of depth in the story. The characterization of Picard, while I admit not completely out of the question, does deviate a lot from the Picard we know from TNG. The only real hint of it is when he touches the skin of the Phoenix. If he wasn't played by Patrick Steward, you would never guessed it was Picard. There is no real redemption, Picard goes off character for a good hour, and the final arc he finally does what Picard would normally do, sacrifice himself as a captain (may I remind you, extremely close to the plot of last TNG movie). Again, an enjoyable movie, definitely the best of the TNG movies, but climax is very much a popcorn movie and not Star Trek experience. Top is reserved for STII, STVI and maybe STIV and STI that had genuine thematic character development as the core of its movie. This movie doesn't even try to do that.

Without exaggeration, this movie has likely had a bigger impact on my life than any other movie I've seen. Because of Picard's monologue, I read Moby Dick cover to cover. I need to finish that book. This movie and the Wrath of Kahn inspired me to start reading it about 15 years ago, but I only made it about a quarter of the way in. Then about a year ago, I started it again and made it about 3/4 of the way, but stuff happened and I haven't found my way back to it. Why did Herman have to make it so long? Nevertheless, I did find a few quotes from First Contact and the Wrath of Kahn in it and it filled me with glee every time.

I'd never thought that (re: Frakes), as it works for the characters too. Those two have seen each other in pretty much every situation imaginable going back years (even before TNG!), but I'm willing to bet that's the first time that Will has ever seen the usually-reserved Deanna absolutely smashed, and he's clearly loving the hell out of it from the beginning of that scene. That was really the worst imo. Picard would have NEVER behaved like that to Worf. EVER. Watch the "Drumhead' and see Picard being the sage against hot headedness to Worf. And also that time when Worf was accessing Starfleet records with Data to further his Father's redemption in name but Picard kindly scolded him and Worf was all pissed about it. Picard would NEVER call Worf a coward, it was was just horrible, extremely out of character. But I can see in this film it was just forced drama, they need to deliver a big movie and I guess they didn't think they had enough and so put that in there. I've never once seen Picard yell at or insult another soldier. EVER. The only thing that came close was when he gave a dressing down to Wesley in his ready room when he realized Wes was covering a death for his cadet team. That's the closest thing (not counting when Riker + Picard yelled at each other but under the influence of Saviks mental sickness projecting).
@HyraxusPrimus
@HyraxusPrimus Ай бұрын
@@paulpolpiboon9535That was the whole point, I thought. Picard's not his usual self because of his PTSD from the Borg last time, and to him at that moment surrendering anything, even in order to gain victory, is out of the question ("too many retreats, too many compromises"). Even beyond Worf being Worf, Worf had even saved his life just a little while ago on the deflector dish. That's how blinded Picard is by the need for revenge, he wouldn't listen to the strongest warrior on his ship when it comes to what they should do. (Not to mention the ship itself being heated temperature wise) Plus, he came back and apologized after he got a hold of himself, and he stayed that way for the rest of the movie. I think it's also to show off Worf's growth. Lt. Worf would've been ecstatic to stay and fight to the last man, but Lt. Cmdr. Worf had to weigh the lives of the crew and make the hard choice to cut their losses while they still could. He spent a lot of time getting denied in TNG, that's what happens when he refuses to be denied. Sometimes, after gaining experience on your own you do butt heads with your old trusted mentor.

When good people give Star Trek a change they very often fall in love with it. They think it's about space and aliens and all that but it's really about what it means to be human and about building a better future for humanity. Gene Roddenberry was wise enough to realize that because of censors he couldn't tell the kind of stories he needed to so he put it in space and filled it with aliens so they wouldn't notice. That's why I find it so funny when people accuse ST of being woke NOW 😂

I still prefer the alternate history presented in the non-canonical Star Trek novel _Federation._ In that story, Earth had intrasolar colonies and space stations. Zefram Cochrane developed the warp drive on the Moon, ran a test sled put beyond Pluto's orbit, and then made the first human-manned voyage to another star from the station on Titan. By the time WWIII devastated the Earth, humanity had interstellar colonies in several other systems as well as having made first contact with Vulcans. It was the interstellar colonies, pouring their resources back towards the homeworld, which allowed Earth to rebound in a few decades rather than a century.

I saw this with friends on opening weekend in 1996. It was a full house packed with Trekkers and I just remember it being so cool to be with a community of fellow fans. I distinctly remember two parts in particular where the crowd cheered and whooped and hollered like mad: 1. When Worf goes “Assimilate this.” 2. When the aliens reveal themselves to be the Vulcans. It was like watching the birth of Star Trek. I still get goosebumps and even tears at times when the Vulcan raises his hand and says “live long and prosper.” It gives me hope that if we don’t destroy ourselves, there’s a bright future for humanity ahead of us.

Same. But as much as I love this movie, it's also when they ruined the Borg forever as an enemy. By giving the Borg a face, they made them more recognizable [less alien] and thus less frightening as an opponent. And in subsequent appearances (and I credit them for creating some good content along the way), the Borg just became another ho-hum, let's prop up the ratings popularity push by lazy writers whose contributions were uninspired focus groups of "wouldn't it be great if X but with this derivative twist?" Every show had to have Borg episodes and over time, the Borg just became a paper tiger. In some respects, it's very Trek... the trope of "assimilating" the Big Bad and making them part of your crew in future series. But in this case, it came at the expense of a unique IP in SciFi.

But you look at how the dialogue was constructed for the film, and they obviously were careful to keep it vague, and make the pointy ears reveal a big deal :) So cute.

@@jerodast During the entire run of Trek First Contact had never really been discussed. It was just implied that Humans had discovered the other Races while exploring the Galaxy. In a way, this film was the 'genesis' of Star Trek: Enterprise and the period before the creation of The Federation.

The four founding species of the Federation of Planets, according to TOS "Journey to Babel" were the Humans, Vulcans, Tellarites and Andorians. It was logical to assume one of them were the First Contact, favoring the Vulcans, but the movie first time confirmed it.

I wish Chief O’Brien had been in this movie. He could’ve been piloting the Defiant after the others were killed, and been beamed aboard by the Enterprise. Later, he could’ve even helped Geordi with rebuilding the Phoenix.

@@timmooney7528 He didn't say command, he said pilot. I don't think he needed to pilot though. Just mention that he was working in Defiant engineering until they had to evacuate the ship, and send him straight to transporter room 3. @@jerodast O'Brien's character is an anomaly in the Trek universe. The lowest ranked cadet in Starfleet has more authority than him. I can see him in an important role in station ops, but on a ship he would be doing stuff well above his pay grade.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this film, Cassie, directed by Frakes who is a great director able to capture both humor and drama. I'm gratified you have learned the Vulcan salute and relate I had the same difficulty. Finally, my favorite scene involved drunk Deana saying, "I told him our cover story. He didn't BELIEVE me!" and her other lines in that scene. I suspect that Frakes who referred to Sirtis, playfully, as his "Other wife," enjoyed arranging that comical scene.

I think Stewart and Alfre Woodard's performances are so good here. Woodard is one of America's finest actors (with one Oscar nomination to her name), and she brings a lot of weight to role of Lily. The scene where she confronts Picard about his Ahab motivation is probably the best acted scene in any Star Trek movie.

To explain the "EMH" that appeared in sickbay. EMH stands for "Emergency Medical Hologram". It's a simulated, interactive person like those on the holodeck, but he can only appear in the sickbay where there are holo-emitters specifically for that purpose, and he is meant to only be a temporary doctor should all the medical personnel be incapacitated. The EMH is played by Robert Picardo, who plays another version of the same character as part of the cast on Star Trek: Voyager, which had already begun airing when this film came out. It was a way to connect this film to that show, just as showing Worf as the Captain of the Defiant was a connection to Deep Space Nine, which his character had joined after TNG was over (plus it was a clever way to get him into the film without having to make up a convoluted reason). The actor playing the Maître d' at the club in Picard's holo-program, Ethan Phillips, is also on the cast of Voyager, but as a different character.
