Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) helps the gang beam aboard the Enterprise.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When last we left the crew of the star ship Enterprise, they were heading home following a skirmish with the despotic Khan. The unpleasant incident had cost the life of Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy)--or so it seemed. Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) is informed by Spock's father Sarek (Mark Lenard) that his son is being kept alive in the thoughts of one of the crew members. It now becomes necessary to search for Spock's body, so that flesh and soul can be rejoined on Vulcan. It turns out that Spock's spirit is residing within the mind of the Vulcan's longtime shipmate, "Bones" McCoy (DeForrest Kelley). Finding the body is another matter, since the Enterprise has been consigned to the trash heap and thus is out of Kirk's jurisdiction.

For anyone curious why she doesn't go with the others/how she gets to Vulcan, the novelization says that she stays behind to jam Starfleet communications to prevent Enterprise being chased, and then beams to the Vulcan embassy where Sarek grants her asylum. RIP, Nichelle Nichols.

Uhuru is one character that we know next to nothing nothing about. We know Spock is from Vulcan, and see his parents, Kirk's family is mentioned and so on, but we don't know if Uhura has a brother, sister or what. In the "salt vampire " episode, we learn she fanticizes about this handsome hunk Black man, but that's it.

Another great Uhura moment was in the often overlooked Animated Series. In the Lorelei Signal, she takes command and rescues the senior male officers. A future Captain Uhura would have truly been a force to recon with.

At a convention, Ms Nichols talked about that scene. She explained that the cast often recorded their dialogue while on the road in a booth at any convenient recording facility, with no director or other actors present. Knowing the Uhura role, she generally read her lines cold without reading the whole script. She then said that it's too bad there was no audio blooper reel for the animated series, because her reading was (approximating; this is from memory), "Nurse Chapel, I'm assuming command. …? I take command of the ship??! I'm assuming command of the ship! I finally get to take command of the ship!!!!!" You will be missed, Uhura.

I know the MLk backstory with Ms Nichols and I’m not saying she made no contribution, I’m saying it’s a shame she wasn’t given even more opportunities but I absolutely acknowledge the importance of her character in Starfleet. It would’ve been nice to hear her do more than just talk about “sub space interference “or “hailing frequencies “.

She was going to quit the original series because (in her words) she was tired of just saying “hailing frequencies open” all the time until her encounter with MLK Jr who convinced her of her importance on that bridge despite the few lines she was getting.
