Poor Bill. He had found out his Father had passed away during the making of this episode. They were going to shut down filming, but because Bill's flight wasn't until the evening he asked them to continue because he didn't know what else he would do with himself. So, like a champ, he struggled through and they kept filming. There is a video where Leonard Nimoy says they all herded around Bill and gave him all the support he needed, you can hear the gentleness in Nimoy's voice the second time Bill can't remember the line "By himself." A real gem of Star Trek Bloopers. Thank you to whoever found this and posted it! Wish there were more!

Even though he was struggling, William Shatner still made the time to jest about his messing up. I love when he says, jokingly, "Ah, shit, man, I just blew it!" And when he goofs again, he manages to make Leonard Nimoy chuckle a bit! And the gentleness with which Nimoy corrects him on his line.
@girl1213

They weren't always rivals, especially not when Shatner was going through an emotionally hard time. His father passed away, and he needed to go back to work to keep himself sane, so Nimoy and the others let him work and didn't give him any flack that they might have otherwise. The original Star Trek crew may not have been as close as the TNG crew (they did better with the movies compared to the show due to having time away from one another between the productions), but they were all good people, which they all acknowledged. Shatner soon is going to reunite with Nimoy and his father...I'm sure they're going to all have a lot to talk about. 😥

@@girl1213 Giggling is often a way to counteract grief in times of stress and sadness. I don't know why - it happens so often in my families during funerals. From all accounts, it was a rough day. The much fan-magged rivalry (I have a few of those fan mags still) was much ballyhooed, but it is typical (Robert Vaughn/David McCallum being a good example among many.) And both were under enormous pressure during the series. They did work it out eventually and became good friends. It is too bad that Leonard became ill. I feel that the new little film, Unification, speaks to that subtly and to so many other things. Like hope.

This is from the filming of the season 1 episode "The Devil in the Dark". During the filming of this episode, Bill Shatner found out his father had passed away. Yet here he is, staying professional, still trying to comfort OTHER people.

They shot his scenes at all the same time, at the beginning, so that he could fly back to Montreal. If you watch the episode carefully, you'll notice the parts where they've done that.
@marysheeran519
@marysheeran519 Ай бұрын
@@robynzelickson6164 Yes, according to Nimoy, the closeup shots were of Mr. Shatner. The long shots shooting Kirk from the back are a body double. It's well done, so it's almost impossible to detect, even if you look hard. They always tried to make the body doubles' hair, costume, etc as accurate as possible.
@robynzelickson6164
@robynzelickson6164 Ай бұрын
@marysheeran519 they did a good job of that for the most part. In The Enemy Within, there are a couple of spots where you can tell that it's the double but you have to really watch

Listening to this you realize that a big part of Shatner's famous "pause acting" is the actor trying to remember his lines. Shatner himself cops to this in a recent video where he critiques various impersonators of himself.
@stephenwright8824
@stephenwright8824 3 жыл бұрын
Trying to remember his lines, eh? Nothing to do with the idea that it took the writers awhile to finish individual scenes, or whole episodes, before production start deadlines, and that the "pause acting" was something _he himself_ developed to deal with getting handed fresh script pages as they arrived? I think it's the latter; other actors in many other productions for the big & small screen have been able to learn and remember the lines of longer productions, _when those lines are on paper and can be learned._
@davidc.2878
@davidc.2878 3 жыл бұрын
@@stephenwright8824 You seem to think I was insulting Shatner. Did you watch the video? He affirmed Campbell's claim that trying to remember his lines is why he was pausing. Why he was trying to remember his lines (incomplete scripts or lots of lines to remember in a short time or whatever) was not mentioned and he himself clearly didn't take it as an insult, so why do you? In fact, I think he also used the pausing effectively for dramatic impact. I'm a big fan of Shatner's hammy acting--the show would never have survived without it.

@Lois Dunne Wannabe? The definition of a wannabe is someone who wants to be something that they aren't. By any objective measure, Shatner was and is a very successful actor. His salary and his list of credits establishes him as a bona fide actor. You may not think he's a good actor--everyone is entitled to their opinion--but it's a fact that he is an actor, not a wannabe.

One of my favorites is from "The Ultimate Computer". Kirk meets Commodore Wesley in the Transporter Room: Wesley "You've had a singular honor conferred on you, Jim." Due to editing, the 'c' in 'conferred' got 'doubled': "You've had a Singularonic conferred on you, Jim". I just assumed that "Singularonic" was the brand-name of the M-5! :)

William Shatner did not have a tongue piercing. This TV program was on from 1966 -1969. Tongue piercings were not popular until the 80s. The light was just hitting saliva. Also William Shatner was 35 years old in 1966. Tongue piercing in the 80s were for the teenyboppers. You seriously think he had a tongue piercing in 1966 at the age of 35?

@@marysheeran519 I certainly would not make light of someone losing their parent. That's a terribly difficult time, of course. But there was nothing in the headline, thumbnail, or the text indicating this had happened. How was a person posting to know? Looking at this today, I don't see any comments preceding mine that indicated it either. There may have been, but they were not prominently posted, and the overwhelming visual layout, as well as the audio itself portrays this is a standard blooper video.
