One of the best episodes... Still holds up well. This episode was made very early in the first season. The show's "brain trust" had not yet thought through phasers and photon torpedoes, etc.

It's because of the submarine suspense movies of the time. In those movies, the couldn't make noise because they would be picked up on the enemy's sonar. And the public of 1966 wasn't as sophisticated as we are today, so it added to the suspense. :)

A great episode, that comes with some very good memory for me. First time I watched this episode was back in 1980, aged 10. I used to spend Saturdays at my grandparents'. I have a vivid memory of my grandma and me watching the episode. Now, in my mature years I imagine her watching this episode she probably wasn't interested at all, just happy to spend some hours of her last days with her grandson. Sometimes the smallest things are just enough to turn on our true self: the inner eye in our mind is a powerful tool to bring back good memories. Thank you for sharing the episode. Good SF and family love. God Bless you all

It is hard to believe this is the first episode where they fired their weapons in space. They did not think of two weapons for the ship until later. That was 4 episodes later, when they fought the Gorn ship. That was my favorite episode as a kid tied with the Doomsday Machine. I loved watching them fire weapons. It was so cool. We only had a black and white tv but it was great.

Its actually crazy for later fans to think about just *how little* star trek lore there was at the time. Photon torpedoes, weapons so basic that launch ports for them are built into later ship models, didn't exist yet, which would've made this episode play out alittle differently if they did. The Federation itself didn't even exist, not by the name "United Federation Of Planets" anyway. They didn't even know the year.

Balance of Terror is one of the best Star Trek episodes of the original series. For that matter, it rivals any Trek variant to come along afterward as well. It's storyline is based on a movie, which itself was based on a novel called, The Enemy Below. A German submarine and it's captain square off against an American Destroyer and her captain in the middle of the Atlantic. If you love this episode of Star Trek, you'll enjoy this movie. Each work stands on it's own and offers enough contrast that one compliments the other.

This is one of my favorite episodes. It reminds me of the WWII submarine movies I loved when I was younger. They even have the Romulans trying the debris ploy like they did in WWII subs to throw the enemy off. And it has a good lesson on prejudice when Kirk calls out the bigoted helmsman after he questions Spock's loyalties. "There is no room for bigotry on my bridge." he says.

Okay, so they messed up on the phaser thing...photon torpedoes, actually, but it was actually minor when contrasted with the tense atmosphere of the episode, the acting, and the music. In future episodes, they made sure to use the correct terms for phasers and photon torpedoes. As well, they did away with the separate room for firing phasers, and had Sulu handle that. It actually worked better that way. Great episode. Along with The Doomsday Machine, one of my favorites.

And even when the Klingons did have a cloaking device in Star Trek 3 The Search for Spock, the Enterprise used photon torpedoes against the cloaked ship not phasers with proximity blast. And when the Enterprise E went up against the Scimitar which was perfectly cloaked, the used beam phasers photon torpedoes and quantum torpedoes.

A faction in the Federation probably suspected during the Earth-Romulan War that some Vulcans might be spies for the Romulans. The suspicious officer panicked and was desperate for extra proof that Spock was on their side. Kirk tells Spock to work quietly so the suspicious officer gets the message: Spock is the most reliable sailor on board. If anyone is a mole on the Enterprise, it's not him. If Kirk had only made a comment about bigotry, that man might have panicked even further but kept quiet about it until he could report it to overly excited members of command. In other words, Kirk is too openly confident about Spock, using just the right words, to be misinterpreted as trying to cover for a known spy, or a right-hand man he didn't want to believe could be one, etc. A Cold War audience would immediately pick up on this. Truly trustworthy friends had a peculiarly profound significance in that era.

If you take literally what is shown on the original fx it looks like the phasers, in this case set to proximity blast, can be fired from the front, left and right sides of the dome at the bottom of the saucer section. Which actually fits the model which had three rectangular, whatever, around the bottom part of the dome. One in front one in the port side and another on the starboard side. The photon torpedo tubes had to have been directly adjacent to the phasers also since they are always shown fired from almost the exact same spot.

Proximity blast is probably the least accurate mode, which is why it's almost never used, and it seems to be hard on the system. Instead, they favor pulse and beam modes. The blasts use powerful bursts that disperse the energy over a wide volume, tedious in nature, but deliver results resembling depth-charging a submarine.

The Star Trek episode Balance of Terror is very similar to an old World War II movie about a submarine and the severing destroyer called Run Silent, Run Deep where the Americans were dropping depth charges on a German submarine. The two captions were playing a cat and mouse game. Very much the same as Capt. Kirk of the starship Enterprise and the Romulan commander. The old movie could have been the Enemy Below both movies were from 1957 or 1958.

Ok ok....so sound can’t travel in a vacuum...but did you know we now have lasers, that when bounced of a distant window, can record the vibrations of the glass due to speech inside...thus providing long range eves dropping not dependant upon the air in between! So in Start Trek...one “sensor” capability could well be a similar electromagnetic “Ping and return” that reads sounds in a distant hull. So...yes...they are right to observe silent running protocols huh.

Wouldn't the "ping" itself give themselves away, making it a useless device?
@maelwine1
@maelwine1 5 жыл бұрын
The debris could be vibrating still, and a laser beam striking it would bounce a modulated reflecting beam back, as opposed to the results if the beam hit empty space, and using the speed of light, and the wavelength of the laser you could determine the distance of the debris, and the size of some of the particles. So, you're right.

You don't hear it in the Doomsday Machine when the Anti proton beam hits the Enterprise or in any of the second season when the Enterprise gets hit with enemy fire. The sound of Apollos bolts hitting the Enterprise when they are destroying the temple make the the same noise as the impact of the weakened plasma weapon in this episode but without the beeping. I also believe the sound is different when the Klingon Scout ship hits the Enterprise with its weapons in Errand of Mercy

That's not Burst Mode Phasers! No Such Mode. A phaser can only be a Beam. Those are Photon Torpedoes in form and sound? A huge slip up by the re-editing effects people when they re-did the effects for the remastered version.Look at all the other trek shows and films I guessing you see this sound and burst like weapon is only Torpedoes?

This story is well remembered as being one of the better stories from the original series..........and only marred by someone in the S/F dept by using Photon torpedo's, whilst the script clearly states that phasers should be fired. Does anyone know if this was corrected in the updated CGI enhanced version of this story?

There was a clip of the remastering producers talking about this question. They picked up on the line of dialogue about the phasers being set to Proximity Blast. So they used red blips for the CGI torpedoes, and white ones here in this episode. So, here's the real world info: there were no such things as photon torpedoes at this point in the series. They were introduced in the 2nd half of the first season in "Arena" after Gene L. Coon took over as show runner.
