Wolf 359 really was a turning point in Federation history. Starfleet was beaten down so badly they had to completely rethink ship design after that. I mean they hadn't really needed to up their game since the Galaxy Class was still a big dog even compared to the Romulan Warbirds. I guess it was a blessing in disguise that the Borg invasion happened when it did. After that the "Anti-Borg Initiative" took off and Starfleet started thinking in different terms when it came to ship design. I remember seeing about half a dozen new ships being developed as part of that initiative including the Defiant Class and the Sovereign Class. Who knows how badly the Dominion War would have gone without the defeat at Wolf 359 to jolt Starfleet and the Federation out of their lethargy.

Now I understand fully why Captain Sisko hated Captain Picard. It took him a long time to forgive Picard, even though it was not Picard's fault.

This takes me back to watching this for the first time in 1990. The only thing more shocking that Picard transformed into a Borg was the destruction of all those starships at Wolf 359-unthinkable at that time.

We never see a full count of the Forty ships. Even in Memory Beta sources, we don't have a full list. Memory Beta also lists two different ships as the 'survivor.' Edit: Make that THREE ships that are listed as survived.

6:13: A total massacre. The Borg had already adapted to all the phaser frequencies from its encounter with the Enterprise and they had Picards knowledge of Federation battle tactics to draw on. They never stood a chance :(

Even if the Admiral had listened to Captain Riker's and Commander Shelby's warning ..... they were gonna get their ass slaughtered. They just wasn't enough time to deviate so many ships' primary tactics before the battle.

@@dhinton1 They also had no effective weapons. Even once Enterprise caught up with the cube, her weapons were all useless. With no weapons to damage the enemy, there was no amount of ships that was going to make an impact in the fight. It was just a matter of how long it took the Borg to destroy them. They had to beat the Borg using their own strength against them, their collective consciousness created by the their sub-space links to one another.

Ironic that all this destruction and death ended up helping the federation by getting it off it's ass and starting to think about things like better defenses/weapons for it's ships. Q did his job only too well. Pity it had to come with such a high price.

The borg were coming anyway that was the idea. It was shown later Q hurled them to system J25 in order to shake them out of their complacency "you are about to move into areas of the galaxy containing wonders beyond your wildest dreams - and terrors to freeze your soul".

I noticed that there was a clip from Star Trek Enterprise on this, - the old Intrepid type. Not actually Wolf 359 related but good for a battle scene fill in nonetheless. Ships clearly identified at Wolf 359 are the burning remains of a New Orleans class starship, Niagara class, Freedom class, a damaged Constitution class (refit) secondary hull section, and an unused study model for star trek: Planet of the Titans. Easily identifiable starship classes seen were the Oberth class, Miranda class, Nebula class, Ambassador class, and of course the Excelsior class.

the Constitution class model used in Best of both worlds was the (self) destructed Enterprise NCC 1701 model from Star trek III

Ships that looked like the NX class Enterprise were in use then, they're called Akira-class ships.

@@alexanderjones9572 The Akira class post-dates Wolf 359. In fact, the ship class was designed because of Wolf 359, as one of many in a new line of Federation warships designed specifically to fight the Borg, along with the Sovereign and Prometheus class, and of course, the Defiant class.

They did essentially do that "transport a nuke" thing once. There's a Voyager episode (Dark Frontier) where they force the Borg to remodulate their shields, then transport a torpedo on board. Worked like a charm.

Although I do agree they nerfed a bit, but remember the real power of the Borg is just technology. once you learn to circumvent that, its not that difficult. they used Picard to get the upper hand with Star Fleet tactics, later we got 7 of 9, to do the same thing. plus Borg were busy with species 8472 during Voyager.

Definitely not the first, but by far the worst. Even in lost major engagements, a large portion of Starfleet forces were able to retreat from battles against the Romulans and the Klingons. The Borg allowed them no such room to maneuver, since the different in power was so great. Only one ship escaped Wolf 359.

the point is that this is several years before the uniforms and phasers seen here even existed, and those uniforms were originally only worn on starbases. This is like seeing a canadian soldier in 1985 wearing a CADPAT uniform and carrying a C7.

This is how the Borg should be- hugely destructive, you can rarely beat them, and only then at a huge price. When it was TNG, you always knew if the Borg were coming, they meant business and would GIVE IT. Voyager overused the Borg WAY too much and, what's worse, got out of trouble with them without this sort of carnage WAY too much. This, Q Who, ST VIII with the time-traveling Borg: THAT's what you think of, and that's what you should have happen, when the Borg come into play.

@evrbody Part II wasn't written when Part I was filmed. The whole idea of a cliffhangar and Picard becoming Locutus was because Stewart hadn't signed his contract. Had he not come to terms, it gave them a way to kill him off. However that "incentive" worked and they worked out a deal and had to figure out a way to restore Picard.

Should have done a voyager and beamed in torpedoes around the areas of the cube. Almost every time starfleet is able to transport onto a borg ship. They'll probably shield against it in the future but would have prevented this battle. And sisco wouldn't have lost his wife.

Recall also that duty station seemed to play a role in what uniform was worn. Sisco wore the "traditional" Commander uniform (same as Riker) till he took command of DS9, and in many DS9 episodes (as well as the movie Generations), the TNG and DS9 uniforms were worn side by side. For all we know, it was an individual decision or the CO's call as to which uniforms were used on any given ship or station, and being rather conservative, Picard may have prefered the "service" uniform over "fatigues".

I think maybe the battle of Wolf 359 is the point at which the federation decided to stop having families on starships. Generally you don't expect your ships to get so easily pwnt, and theyre usually on boring science or exploration missions so it would make sense to have the crews families on board- but after so many ships getting wasted at 359 I can imagine starfleet saying "okay no more civillians" Thats why the Enterprise-D passengers goes from like 1000 in the early seasons to 400 later on

battle of Wolf 359 occured in 2367, by that time the Voyager/DS9 uniforms were already in service, but as we see in ST: Generations, they did not completely replace the Next Generation uniforms for some time.

I recall one change in uniform during TNG, and all the shows are seperate entities, and start out with different uniforms, and also the movies. But in each show there's a lot of consistency. The point is that the 'Borg' clips show a uniform which is an odd mix of two shows' uniforms, and isn't proportioned correctly. Similar for the weapons.

Starfleet's great stand at Wolf 359. Where they got their asses handed to them. 39 ships lost and nearly 11,000 lives. They need to heed the words of Sun Tzu. If you desire peace, prepare for war. Hopefully that preparation will be unnecessary, but I'd rather be prepared and it not be needed than not prepare and get my ass kicked.

@Jerkwad152 The Constitution class ship was retired (decommissioned) sometime in the early 24th century. Picard alluded to Scotty in 'Relics' that there was a Constitution Class ship in the fleet museum, though he said nothing of there being an existing ship in service. Even the redesigned and upgraded "refit version" of the ship was considered "old" by the time the Excelsior class was comming into service. It's highly unlikely that a constitution class ship was still in service in the 2360's.

I doumbt she has ALL of the borg knowledge, but as a drone she could have encountered a vast amount. Remember, she was assimilated as a child; and there is no limit (as far as we know yet) to the amount of data the human brain can store. Not to mention her brain could potentially store more, depending on what all functions the nanites in her blood and the neural implant can do.

The first time we see those unis was with the start of DS9, well after, and the implication there seemed to be that on a starship you wear the TNG style unis, and more backwater grunt work type postings you wore the new kind. When Voy came out you could retcon it and say ships had been using them before then, but I don't think that was ever the intention.

I think it might surprise you that in Star trek TOS, Starfleet was actually composed of only 13 starships. That was considered "enough" back then as it was established that a starship was capable of taking down an entire planet by itself. Examples of this was seen in several chapters of TOS. I think the million ship thing is a by product of Star Wars.

Bear in mind that Enterprise-D did not engage the Borg cube at Wolf 359. That was the rallying point but by the time Enterprise had arrived, the fleet was in ruins and the Borg were well on their way to Sector One (Earth), where the Enterpriste finally went to battle with Locutus.

@CoolsBreeze When they made TNG and DS9 it was tough to animate shields, in the larger battle sequences one often sees ships fighting, apparently without shields. The canon, "official" explanation is that the shields then were conforming to the skin of the ships instead of in a bubble, or maybe worn down by that point. The real reason is the effects budgets & time crunch made doing shelds impossible in some battle shots. Pretty neat stuff... still ace effects that hold up very well.

If I had anything to do with starfleet defenses, i would have taken into account phasers don't stop drones after a couple hits, and started equipping crew members with handguns and shotguns. then reverse engineer the "utility glove" drones have in order to use it on Borg tech.
