@@thomasn3882 In the expanded universe, it is explained that Tamarians have a fundamentally different brain structure to most humanoids, as such experience concepts such as time and self differently. The story explains that Tamarian children learn the stories behind the metaphors, and thus their meanings, repetition. No different than we learn words. Variations of meaning in metaphors were conveyed through subtle vocal and gestural cues that the universal translator had previously missed, no different than we use "Cool" or Cool for temperature or good condition. In fields such as engineering and programming, a musical language was used to convey precise equations, numbers and instructions; thus explaining how Tamarians could effectively operate starships and carrry out scientific/technological feats

I think Riker in this scene actually did a great job of displaying to the Temarians the lengths humans are willing to go to to defend eachother, while also displaying no real desire to fight once Picard was safe. The Temarians likewise were not hostile but they did have a goal. By backing off and trying to pull distance rather than go all out with photons and full spread, it might just have been enough to make the Temarians hesitate destroying the Ent. They also accepted the hail pretty much instantly demanding an explanation, so really this scene is a pretty awesome first-ish contact between two powerful species imo 💯

Well at the beginning of the episode it's stated that the Tamarians are about equal to the Federation in terms of technology so it's not surprising their ship would be formidable, probably a flagship for such an important mission. The Tamarians clearly felt they had much in common with the Federation and I don't think they had much luck contacting other races before this. So they were willing to do whatever was necessary to communicate. Picard never forgot the sacrifice the Tamarian captain made, and at least in STO, he gladly saw them join the Federation not even 30 years later, pretty quick by most standards.

I think that the Tamarian language is just a metaphor to convey the message that the more we learn about someone's history and culture, the more context and perspective we can provide ,therefore the more effective we are able to communicate. It happens here on earth to a lesser, but still very important degree- for example when Henry Rollins, in all good faith, visited a favela in Brasil and tried to do something positive for the people, he ended up nearly causing a riot.

Not to mention that the Tamarian ship was probably at point-blank range or close to it at that point. Torpedo detonations at that range would've done a lot more damage to the Enterprise--especially given the compromised state of its shields--than they would've done to the Tamarian ship. Riker did well : he tried to retrieve the Captain from a perceived kidnapping. Disabling the emitters only shows he didn't want to destroy the Tamarians. Sure he could've used torpedoes, but those do heavy damage and if they had destroyed the ship, it would've undone what Picard and Dathon endured together. He didn't know the Tamarian's shield strength so it makes sense to take a shot at disabling before killing in this situation. Military shortsightedness often leads to more pain than gain.

There is simply the option that the Tamarians simply had a bigger main gun with more power channeled to it, a Glock is more advanced than a tudor cannon but the latter is still the more powerful. As for the language it is more subtle than ours not less complex. I have heard that a spinoff novel discussed the learning and instruction aspects, apparently Tamarians learn to speak by reenactment and repetition with a music language to represent maths ("Friends with the Sparrows")

I just saw this on Netflix. They fixed the phaser blunder. That was nice of them.

I kept waiting for the Tamarians to be brought back in the final season of DS9; to help fight the Dominion.

Was expecting the helm console to explode at 1:03. Surprised it didn’t this time.
