And yet, when it came out, most computer magazines gave the game bad reviews. One said the game's point and click system was a "pick a path mess" and that De Lancie's performance was the only thing good about it (but not enough to save the game). Another reviewer stated that the game lacked real challenge since Q would revive the player every time he died. Mr. De Lancie doesn't have the problem that many of the other ST iconic actors have occasionally exhibited. He drops "spot on" into his character effortlessly. I thought many characters took time to get their groove back in the TOS movie run. II and VI were closest to the original tenor. I don't think the TNG cast has as big a set of shoes to fill in that regard. This was very enjoyable. Thanks for posting it.

So the bridge of the USS Righteous seen here is the Excelsior bridge from Flashback, except that the computer displays have been changed to LCARS, as opposed to the ST4/5/6 displays. I like Q. I always did. Even in the first Star Trek Next Gen episode. . A pain in the %#%#'s who generally made you look at something and do the right thing while being annoyingly entertaining to do it. I never understood Picard about that one. Here you have an amateur archeologist who is out exploring the universe [Picard] and you have a guy who has the power and is willing to give you a tour of the universe in any point in history - he could have brought him back to the heyday of the dyson sphere they found once, [scotty episode], or even back when the Slaver empire was around in force as an outside observer, but Picard always shunned the guy, yet claimed to be wanting to "explore strange new worlds". Star Trek: Borg was a great example of Q having a bit of a soft spot, here he gives Furlong a chance to save the old man [sort of puttering around the edges of the rules of being a Q I'm sure] ....and be his typical self in the process. Great ending to a great story that would have made a great book.I'd be looking for the epilogue though, when they finally get home.
@cyninbend9 жыл бұрын
notasloud r Exactly!! I still think of that kind of thing when I watch the reruns on BBC (MY DVDs won't work--they give my messages of a faulty disc or whatever). Q has so much to offer--only Picard's gf "Cash?" sees that! I just don't get it. When the Borg were on the Enterprise's ass, I'd have been negotiating with Q like crazy! And same for Janeway...ask Q to get your crew home! They only live once, their parents and friends are dying of old age, and kids are growing up without parents. But I guess the writers and producers had the series mapped out and had no storylines to get around the ability to ask Q for help--hence the anger and faux resentment. I'd just have made Q a very elusive creature that they always wanted to ask for help, and yelled for him, then nothing, no response, story goes on and they have to save themselves. People would get used to the idea he would not answer very often, not expect a reference every week, and when he did show, they could have him appear from across the universe, busy creating a wormhole, or trying to close a black hole, all kinds of omniscent being stuff...maybe bring a baby dinosaur with him...he could be preoccuppied naming a new universe, or designing a solar system, or destroying some that did not work or were in the way.... They were way too earthy in how they had him show up sometimes. Like a writer forgot this is the UNIVERSE! Q IS OMNISCENT!
@TheMMOFifty9 жыл бұрын
+notasloud r I think Capt.Picard realized that Q would have just kept trolling him no matter what happened. Besides that fact, if we take the phrase "Explore strange new worlds" at face value, yes that might potentially include worlds long lost to the sands of time, they would thus be 'new' to Starfleet in a sense. But Picard was both an archaeologist and an explorer, he prized the wisdom of the old along with the beauty and excitement of the new. This is the Captain who had the only Klingon AND android Starfleet officers in existence in his crew at the same time, for substantial periods. Also, if Q had been a regular character, that would in essence make every episode boil down to "why doesn't Q just (fill in the blank)" to solve any and every problem, which inevitably he would, which would undercut the fact that the characters grew and changed throughout the episodes.

JDL is just an amazing actor. Q is such a great character, he was on 3 different tv shows..! I cannot think of another example of an actor who ever had that particular honor, think about it, right?

"Detective Munch" , originally on "Homicide:Life on the Streets" was also a regular on Law and Order:SVU, and made appearances on the "X Files", and the original L&O as well

David Hewlett played the same character on at least two of the Stargate shows. I'm not sure if he ever showed up in Universe or not.

As Krysta mentioned above, Richard Belzer's "John Munch" character (made famous from Law & Order: SVU) appeared in NINE separate series across five different networks. In fact, he's pretty much the entire linchpin to the "Tommy Westphall universe" theory, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Westphall#The_Tommy_Westphall_Universe_Hypothesis I'm like 90% sure he has the record for fictional character with the most unique series appearances.

No. He was taken over by a Gou'ld and killed in SG-1 by Tealc on the prometheus. Can't remember which season but it's prior to both Atlantis and Universe.

God I love Q! And this story is actually really kinda touching, cause think about it, Why did Q do this at all? Go to all this trouble just to help this boy save his father and his father's ship? Its not the kinda of think Q would normally do, except he said it it the beginning, Q is partly responsible for Wolf 39, because he is the one who introduced Picard to the Borg. And while its true Q did that so that humanity would be aware of the Borg's existence in time to do something about it, thus ultimately saving us, it still caused the incident where so many died. And I think Q did feel partly guilty about that. And while he couldn't just swoop in and save everyone, corrupting the timeline, he could still do this, and save Someone. He chose to help this boy as a small act of recompense, and Its pretty awesome. I also really loved the scene where they are talking about whether Q wants to be liked, because I think it was spot on. Q dose want to be liked, but I dont think he quite Knows how to really make friends. Its sad really, Q is so misunderstood. Plus tricksters are just awesome.

I think you make some good points. It's almost like at first, he's classic Q; he's going to be his smarmy self and teach this cadet a lesson: "You want revenge, huh? Ok then, let me show you how great that will be! NOT!" And when the cadet screws it up and dies, Q doesn't want the fun to be over, so he just keeps letting him re-do it. Also, maybe deep down, he does want him to succeed, because he does feel guilty about Wolf 359. So finally, the cadet does achieve success, and everything is roses. Whoops, except that little thing about messing up the time-line. This is where the point the counselor made comes in. He's right, Q really does want to be liked, and that burns him. Something an omnipotent being can't do by snapping his fingers?? So how does he do something to change himself? He does something good, something kind, for everyone on the ship, and gives them all another chance (except Sprint, which would have made a bizarre paradox). How can they not like Q after that?

I think Q got into this to create an experienced crew that can fight the Borg with some new unexpected tactics. Maybe the Righteous saved Earth 10 years into the future and it was because of Q's little game here.

Why did he do it? becuse he was board and it was a tuesday? what other reason would a "Q" Need? he had fun and the kid did better than he expected and tht intrigued him and put him in a quandry at the end and with a new cube making an appearance why not let this ship from the past go fight it? they may end up getting destroyed or they may destroy the cube with what they now know, either way it will be ENTERTAINING! which is what Q wants. so....Game ON! --Rick

A unique episode, where the main character is the cameraman… but seems silent throughout. I like this episode… a what if scenario, similar to Back to the Future.

This was an old Interactive Movie worked on Window95. I had a copy of it, it came in 4 CD set. Never could get disc #3 to work, which I never got to see the 4th either. It was like the This Way or That books. You were posed a question and had to pick which way to go or what action to take. Nice to see it almost as a movie form, never got to see it through way back then.

John DeLancie was the best thing about this game, constantly hamming it up for the camera. The rest was like a course in Shatner-esque overacting.

Okay, this is kind of weird. I'm a bit drunk admittedly, but twenty-five minutes into my first time watching this video of an endearingly cobbled together interactive game, I already give more of a damn about these characters than anyone in the hyper-edited too-quick-to-realise-plot-and-characterisation-is-balderdash Rise of Skywalker. It is a bizarrely engaging thing.

John Cothran Jr. as Commander Biraka is awesome to watch. Not to mention it's a counselor as first officer, which I think was a Trek first... but his energetic, hopeful personality was a fantastic counter to Q's jaded cynicism.
