FTL is only range "limited" in the BSG universe partly for ship & crew safety, so you don't end up inside a star or a gravity well etc. Partly 'because plot', and partly because the tech of Galactica universe seems to contradict itself and not in a way that makes sense. The tech seems sci-fi in one area, like having massive ships traveling faster than light. Yet they use other tech that seems outdated to even our modern real-world Earth. Imagine asking a bunch of 80s era computers to compute the X/Y/Z coordinates for an FTL jump, they'd probably just display a frowny face and kill themselves. Galactica survived due to Adama refusing to have any type of networked computers, and Pegasus survived by doing this exact thing; a long range blind jump far past the red line.

Note that the use of the water bear indicates that whatever the organic part does, it doesn't have to be voluntary nor can the organic portion normally affect the navigation. In general, the spore drive is an abstraction of how we've found that a communal mycelium network forms in the floor of forests from the numerous number of fungi that live in a forest and this mycelium network actually transports resources to where they are needed. Of course, this transport is slow and can only be called much faster than not being transported at all or requiring animals to distribute the resources (which does happen through feces) so it would hardly be FTL, now presumably the mycelium network is through something other than normal space and time and may be responsible for habitable space and time just as ancient fungi are responsible for creating fertile organic soil, allowing plants to evolve. Recent mycelium research also hypothesized that the transport of needed resources is perhaps an indication of some level of intelligence and the complex mycelium network is similar to neural networks hence there may be a mycelium intelligence that spans the entire forest. I'm disappointed that Discovery never capitalized on the Mycelium intelligence hypothesis, though communicating with such an intelligence would be like a bacteria that got into our bodies, communicating with our intellect, the world of the mycelium intelligence'e view of the world and the actions it can take are on a vastly different scale than that of our own perceptions and actions.
@skyeplus3 ай бұрын
"I'm disappointed that Discovery never capitalized on the Mycelium intelligence hypothesis." Me too. The mechanism of travel it seems to include quantum entanglement, but I'm not sure what's the exact explanation for it's nature is. The obvious choice would be quantum teleportation between two points, while the mycelium network had already done the job of spreading quantum entangled particles across the Universe or even the Multiverse. But it might be a beacon for tunneling type of teleportation. I don't know. But it's a fascinating concept nethertheless.

This is similar to a Star Trek (non canon) novel named "Crossroads". The TOS Enterprise finds an extremely battered and damaged Constitution Class Starship near the "Turtledove Anomalies". They create something called Mu Spectrum Radiation. That's how Spock described it. Turns out the ship (very light spoiler) contains something called the "Psion Drive". It is a biological drive where a creature called a Yagghorth is coupled to an individual with Psionic abilities. The pair can take a starship of any size (At least big enough to accommodate a Yagghorth) and deliver to any place in the galaxy in mere seconds. This is speculated to be due to the more expanded intelligence of the Yagghorth, and it's perception of reality. A Yagghorth can receive images of a planet from a species like Vulcans/Betazoids/others and since the Yagghorth considers the ship and crew its "nest mates" it will take them all to wherever the Psychic shows it to go. It's downside is it's devastating effects to the being coupled to the Yagghorth. The coupling often damages the mind of its user, making them basically go insane from exposure to the natural Mu Spectrum radiation that the Yagghorth creates. Using this drive, the Federation (of the time) has dominated and is using many of it's former enemies (Klingons/Romulans/Vulcans) with notes that Romulans and Klingons especially make "damn good officers". I highly recommend the book! It will explain more than I can.

As a result, the Spore Drive technology was forgotten for centuries, until the arrival of the USS Discovery to Federation HeadQuarters in the 32nd Century (ST-year: 3189). Put another way, the Federation & Starfleet did with the Spore Drive, what the U.S. Government did with the _Ark of the Covenant_ in *[Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981 film)];* boxed up the _Ark_ and stored it away, ignorant of the literally _Divine Power_ they left to gather dust. As for the bomb ... well, if those two ships are powered by 'mere' fission reactors, the EMP from the two exploding would disarm the bomb by frying its electronic systems, rendering it dead ... I've always found it strange that people like to sh*t on the Spore Drive. This is the same franchise where Voyager took 11 years to cross the Delta Quadrant - which is a QUADRANT, i.e. 1/4 of the Milky Way - but the TNG Enterprise can apparently fly at Transwarp Infinity any time it's off screen because it's always exactly where it needs to be in 3 different quadrants for this week's episode. If it was sticking with Voyager's realism, the Enterprise-D would've had to be in service for about 140 years, but in canon it didn't make it 20 before they made it a museum. Which is to say that you may think the Spore Drive is a bad solution to the "ship is always where the plot needs it to be" problem, but it's a better solution than TNG had, which is no solution at all. As for this clip, you can make the argument that Lorca is violating the Prime Directive by utilizing the Tardigrade. I'd agree. You can't say a creature that can interface with a starship and navigate a galaxy-spanning tunnel network by itself isn't sentient, and what is being done to it is most certainly "interfering." However, there's a loophole here: Lorca is not human. He may be a member of Federation Starfleet, but that is only by his own duplicity. As a Terran, he has never sworn to uphold the Prime Directive because Imperial Starfleet doesn't HAVE a Prime Directive. As for everyone else on the ship...yeah that's another story. "Just following orders" is no more a valid excuse in 2250 than it is today.
@EllRatioBozo7 ай бұрын
Also, adding onto the prime directive bit, later on, Stamets basically modifies his DNA to work with the drive. It wasn't about the directive at the time either, the Federation was at war, and possibly on a losing side. Starfleet's whole thing is "Whatever means necessary" in this case.
@jamesknight30705 ай бұрын

For just a moment here, Discovery had some promise. The crew was working together as a unit. They saved the day as heroes, and there was the hint of the moral complexity of what they were doing. Sadly the show shit the bed, and just kept on shitting itself until it was a big mountain of poop. I really didn't like the "twist" of Lorca being a mirror universe guy. He was much more interesting as a scarred war veteran with PTSD and a hard-ass persona.

I know that if pressed you could not describe why this is the case. In fact the show kept getting better to many many fans, and was able to overcome the issues its first season suffered. But once someone has their hate glasses on...

ANY and ALL current day iterations of Star Trek are lacking in the extreme. The last of the good, GREAT, or at least acceptable was Star Trek Voyager. Voyager was plenty good, for damn sure, but sort of in the middle of the pack. The downhill trend began with Star Trek Enterprise.

It's kind of annoying how long it took them to come to the colony's aid. People are dying and Stamets is fangirling over the tardigrade's memory capacity and Lorca is asking the crew (trained military officers) if they feel OK instead of giving the order to jump.

Finally accepted now it's nearly over, it took a long time because the technology did not fit the era but now they are nearly a thousand years into the future and had future upgrades ime starting to prefer this over strange new worlds. Pike was good in season two of Discovery but in SNW they have him acting drippy and La'an is more like a captain they got the image right for SNW but what the hell is going on with the writing Discovery will come out on top. If they think the fans can't ever be pleased it's because the new guy's and gals in charge are not researching all the older material they need to listen to people like Alec Peter's and 90s alum of writing staff and director's, its all over the shop. 🧐

The Borg had Transwarp tech. Q just snaps his fingers and is wherever he wants to be. That's more an ability than a tech, though. But there was also The Collector, who snatched up Voyager in the beginning of her long voyage, and just unceremoniously dropped her off wherever. That used a technology we never scratched the surface of as well.
