Okay already people. I got mixed up as to whether it was Voyager or Enterprise that launched UPN. It was Voyager. VOYAGER, NOT ENTERPRISE. Geez, make one little mistake and get pounced on! Also worthy to note that UPN did not exist as a network, affiliates or otherwise, outside the U.S. Everywhere else (such as Canada, where I hail from) both those shows went straight to syndication, just like TNG and DS9. And the original Star Trek aired on NBC, not CBS.
@LainK19787 жыл бұрын
Don't feel bad about mixing things up. CBS has screwed up the continuity of the Star Trek series by saying that this is taking place in the Prime Universe, but then everything shown about their new show points to it being in the Kelvin Universe.

@Mephilis786 жыл бұрын
+Michael Betcher I liked Lorca, Tilly, and Stamets as characters. These were complex characters who experienced growth and development. The "prime" Georgia was a decent character too, but that obviously didn't last long. I don't like Burnham because of the way she acts, well the character's basic personality (not Green's ability to act). She is incredibly insubordinate, so much so that I wonder how she even got to be a Commander in the first place, unless it was just a diplomatic favor to Sarek. Doesn't matter what the situation is, she always knows better than her superiors. She considers her own opinion so valuable that she is willing to put her ship and crew in jeopardy just to satisfy her whims. She even thrusts the entire Federation into war because she is too stubborn to follow orders. Even Sarek tolled her NOT to do what the Vulcans did, but she knows better than even him. The character had a lot of potential though, they just made her too... unbelievable that it kills my immersion. By the end of the Season she has learned literally nothing, and gets rewarded for it. I've never hoped for the death of a main character in Star Trek before. I didn't even want to see Khan die in TWROK, or Dukat at the end of DS9. No offense, obviously. I do find Burnham to be an interesting topic, though. In much the same way I find Rey from TLJ to be an interesting topic. They have a lot of similarities. I wonder which would win in a fight, considering the heavy plot armor they both sport! lol The part that's torturous though is the visuals. There are so many visuals and sound effects designed to remind us of things in Prime. Like the bridge sounds, the type II phasers, they even started putting TOS chairs in the mess hall by the end. Then the next thing you know they show us things that clearly belong in Kelvin, like Discovery itself has no place in Prime. Or you'll see a "D7" that looks nothing like a D7, or a BOP that looks like a giant bat in space. It's torturous because they give you that feeling that "This might be Star Trek" and then instantly kill the feeling with something ridiculous.

CBS/Paramount REALLY needs to take a good hard look at what Disney has done with Lucasfilm and think, "Maybe we should not only make the content more available but also find a way of fostering new fans NOT just old ones". There are kids today in Elementary School that knows and loves Star Wars just as most of us did when we were kids. How many can you say for kids loving Star Trek. Maybe a few that attended cons with their parents? That's not to say they should copy and paste everything that Disney has done. But understand what made people love Star Trek in the 1st place and expanding that love will not only be infectious but maximizes profit for everyone.

My Rant 1--It shouldnt be online at all. It should be on TV! Lots of people still have cable but most wont pay 10 bucks for one show! 2--The tech in Discovery is way to hightech to be BEFORE Kirk. People can say its 2017 etc. whatever. a prequel should be a prequel which means it should not look like Picards tech and after. I would have used Archer's Enterprise with a new crew and do a series about the Romulan War etc (if i was doing a prequel) 3--More prequels?! I want to see Enterprisee F,G,H,I,J etc. Not more preKirk stuff. BTW: How long is Sisko going to be stuck in the wormhole?! He did tell Kassidy he would be back! Well CBS go find him! Or hears an idea..Star Trek: Titan 4-Star Trek needs to release a toy line etc for all characters! Star Wars has them!

If you can't watch the trailer because you are outside the US, I have heard it is on non-US Netflix. The first thing I noticed when I watched the trailer was, the bridge of that ship (the USS Shinzhou) is on the bottom of the saucer! They have never done that with a Starfleet ship before. In that first shot showing the bridge, the ship is clearly upside down. Later in the trailer, the camera clearly enters the bridge up from a downward position.

Axanar is pretty much dead thanks to Paramount/CBS. They essentially won the court case. while the producers of Axanar are allow to make a fan made video, it can ONLY be 15 minutes long and can NOT include ANY professional actors/actresses in the content and of course Richard Hatch died. So that essentially wiped out the casting. Fan made videos also can NOT have the words Star Trek in them nor can they be tied to ANYTHING or ANYONE in current cannon of the Star Trek franchise. So again, Axanar is pretty much dead.

TNG and DS9 premiered as first run syndicated shows. Voyager and Enterprise premiered on UPN, that was Paramounts failed attempt to form own network. I generally agree on your point about Paramount and CBS acting stupid. When it comes to DVD/BR releases of movies, they should have gone the way studios usually do that. Quick release of theatrical version with limited extras and bit later special edition with every conceivable extra, including the localized poptracks on end credits JJ movies.
@nakyer7 жыл бұрын
VOYAGER was NOT in syndication. IT was there for the launch of UPN. It was replaced by Enterprise on that same network. UPN was NOT a cable channel. It was a broadcast TV network, with local stations as affiliates. It being on cable systems was no more significant than any other local station being on a cable system.

Every Star Trek series has its own take on the appearance of klingons. Have you _seen_ the original series ones? Even DS-9 and Voyager got flak for not making the aliens look alien enough because they just slapped a forehead prosthetic on some extras. At least this one is making an effort to make them look less human. As long as they're still klingons at heart though, it really shouldn't matter what they look like. Maybe this is what klingons 'really' looked like in the minds of the TNG designers, and the old look we're used to was just the result of tech and budget limitations, who's to say?. The visual appearance always changes because every Star Trek series is a product of the fashions and social issues of the time its made. People are obsessing over it because that's all we have to go on so far, but as long as the stories are good and the characters are engaging, it really doesn't matter. It's just window dressing.
@TaliaIGhul7 жыл бұрын
There's no excuse for bad designs. There was also a reason why in Star Trek The Next Generation episode why everyone looked human(oid). As someone else pointed out in another video, they looked like someone ripped off the designs from one of the members of the Xindi.

The same thing happened to SpongeBob Sponge On The Run due to COVID, the Movie has not had a Theatrical Release and moving to Paid VOD like Amazon Prime and Exclusive in the US CBS All Access in freaking 2021! This Sucks. Also, International in Canada through Netflix.
@kevindean00007 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately geo-blocking comes down to one of the main problems is there's no international ownership of properties. Meaning something distributed in the US by one company may be distributed by another company in other countries. Even if the distributor looks the same like if it was distributed by Paramount everywhere, there's still differences between Paramount in the USA and Paramount in Canada, UK, etc. They all want their piece of the greed pie for their region. So sometimes geo-blocking is added to protect the distribution rights holders for those other regions. So in this case, CBS is handling the distribution in the US and is likely behind the youtube channel the trailer is on. If Netflix is airing it in most other places then Netflix may be the only one that can release the trailer in those regions on their youtube channels and other places. It just sucks but it's the result of how the industries evolved and how different countries effect things. Large companies cannot exist as one corporate entity worldwide. While one country may be the governing leadership for a company, there are still individual corporations / divisions in each country they operate in so those countries get the taxes for the monies earned in those countries. They don't want Canada earnings going to the US parent company directly without getting their piece. So, you really need Canada to take over the world so the companies can operate in one global economy, so ultimately you can watch your Star Trek trailer. :) Better get started.

Judging by the little that is known about the show at this date and how CBS intends to distribute the series, I think we can all safely say that it is dead upon arrival. The show itself may be awesome, but if people have to make any alterations to their cable or satellite or even those few who are now gaining access via rabbit ears in urban areas, this alone will kill the series very quickly because they simply will not have a sufficient audience. I feel like Brigadier General Buford who first encountered the Confederacy outside of Gettysburg. TV marketing should be as well thought out as warfare because it is a kind of warfare -- a war for our bucks. Buford could envision how the two great armies might clash upon Gettysburg, and he realized that the Confederacy must be denied the high ground. In those days holding the high ground was a monumental advantage. Today, CBS is competing against an array of "enemies," and it does not hold the high ground. By limiting access to this new series they are basically committing suicide. It's insane and a real tragedy for all hard-core Star Trek fans.

It's the principle, not the process. A trailer for a show available worldwide shouldn't be geo-blocked to begin with.
@condew61037 жыл бұрын
My intended point is that geoblocking is useless, just like the outdated practice of blocking IP addresses to exclude people a webmaster doesn't like. Geoblocking is just an inconvenience. It would not surprise me if pirated copies get posted without the block within hours of release.
@zaranyzerak7 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, that also is an excellent point. And yes, I'm sure this show will be very, very pirated as a result of their exclusionary marketing of it.

Voyager launched UPN, not Enterprise. Just sayin.. but I agree, I don't want CBS All Access. Wish they just have it on Netflix or a normal network broadcast show that goes to Netflix or something like that after the season is done or whatever.

Voyager was the one that launched UPN, not Enterprise

Yep, already pointed out in other comments. Momentarily forgot which one it was.

I think I'll just watch KZbin fan films and wait for some one from Korea to download the new show on KZbin also.

someone must be paying attention, I live in the uk and watched the trailer for Discovery on youtube this afternoon so they must have changed it sometime today. Would've been interesting to hear an opinion on the trailer content I have a feeling some fans will prefer not to see the trailer anyway

The Star Trek franchise has been dead for awhile now. Discovery will simply put yet another nail into an already rotting coffin.

Zaranyzerak I just bought all of the Trek films in a Blu Ray box set(never owned them before) and I'm pretty mixed about the transfers so far. I thought the first 3 looked fine but not perfect, I noticed some DNR in there. When you get to part 4 it's just merely passable HD, almost upscaled DVD level and just looks like a dated Blu transfer at best. They should've used newer transfers for the set but I don't feel ripped off either because you get tons of features and some new features that aren't on those old DVDs you have. Generations looked really good actually, the DVD always looked like dog shit to me so this was a welcome upgrade IMO. I still haven't viewed the others so I can't comment on that yet. I don't like that the director's cuts aren't in the set but honestly I prefer the theatrical cut of The Motion Picture even though the movie feels like Robert Wise is jerking off to the Enterprise during the(longest!!) introduction of the ship with Kirk and Scotty. Did it really need to be that long? Did Robert Wise finally cum? Shit, man!

I got same beaf as you. We are not made out of money. Not all fans of Star Trek can afford to fork out more money.

Love star trek but I'm not paying CBS more money to watch it. I already pay for cable, Amazon, hulunplus, and itunes..enough is enough

Trust me, you are a pretty hardcore Star Trek fan. Nothing to be ashamed of, of course, as I and many here are much the same, but having "fifty plus novels" and all those DVDs - and going on this (well justified rant) - makes you more than a "casual" fan. :-)
@zaranyzerak7 жыл бұрын
Hahaha! Welllll....okay, I guess you've got a pretty indisputable point there. What can I say, I love me some Trek! :D

If you own just one Star Trek novel you are a hardcore Star Trek fan. lol

I thought you were going to rant on the story itself.. I can't say that I disagree with any of this. You're 100% on the mark sir.

If you bought multiple copies of a JJ verse Trek film to get "Content" I feel sorry for you.. I won't buy any of it as I don't consider it Star Trek except in name only. As for Discovery... if I can't watch in on the regular CBS channel then they can keep it... I have too many bills already to shell out more money for a single show on a stream my TV will not support. Hurt them in the pocket book if you want them to change.

I bought the "JJ Verse" Treks precisely once - The Compendium. The earlier releases were gifts to me. Haven't bought any edition of Beyond yet. I definitely vote with my wallet with this franchise.

CBS does have a back catalogue of a lot of their older series, I subbed for the various NCIS, and Knight Rider, both versions. Who pays $70 for their cable? I have cable, dvr and internet for over $100 (comcast)

What the hell is wrong with a female skipper or number one? Who cares what sex or colour the characters happen to be? All I care about is how good they are at acting their roles. This series looks very interesting to me, and I cannot wait for this to premiere. I have watched Trek for over 30 years, and I love ALL Trek.

Because to some people, Star Trek is a male-captains-only franchise apparently, and even Kathryn Janeway spoiled the franchise when Voyager came on the scene (she was, IIRC, the first female captain of a major Trek series).
