This may just be a TV series, but as a black female geek who's been a fan of Star Trek since the 80s, this moment meant *everything* to me. I can't say enough.

@@leon23mm Definitely one of the problems with not having 20+ episode seasons and a main season plot. They mainly focus on main arc plot with is tied to one or two characters instead of having like 10 episodes to just be highlight episodes for others.

Because it's a really bad series compared to other REAL Star Trek products. Poor characters, poor plotwriting, weird equipment.

Most of my issues with the show would be fix by placing it in the 25th century or just outright say this show is a reboot or placing in an alternative universe. As a huge Klingon fan the first two episodes of Discovery left such a bad taste in my mouth I cancel my free CBS subscription. I didn't came back until recently because I got a paramount+ subscription for iCarly. I love the characters it's the blatant disrespect to Star Trek lore. It really should be it's own universe.

Like Commander Sisko before her, it took the 3 season before she got the chair. I don't know why they made that choice *again* especially when they've started with the main character being a captain in everything but DS9 (and Lower Decks), and considering they let Kirk become captain so flippantly in the latter movies, but I'm glad we finally got there. Discovery needs one captain, period, and it should have been Burnham from the start. She's been at the center of everything just like every other captain in the series, so I always thought it strange.
@omegacon410 ай бұрын
Wrong. Sisko was always the commanding officer of DS9, even if he did hold the rank of commander. And before you start complaining about some conspiracy, Chief O'Brien (a white man) was never promoted beyond cheif for all of STNG and DS9.

Eh, the rank shoulder thingies and the combadges are neat, but I prefer the old Disco uniform. I would’ve been happy if they kept the garments, and added the shoulder thingies and Combadge to that. Now THAT would be sweet.

TOS, in my mind, screwed up royally with "Turnabout Intruder" episode. TOS states a woman cannot be captain of a starship. Even as a teenage boy I thought that sounded backwards. And was far from a feminist. I was happy when Next Gen had Captain Garrett of the Enterprise C and ST: Enterprise had a woman captain as well. Now we have Janeway, Burnham, and Freeman. The future is for everyone.
@keirfarnum68112 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they should have known better than to have that in the series.

Remember TOS was written and filmed in a different time so just like today what happens in society makes it to shows and movies was happening back then.

At the time that episode and series was made, in the 1960s, women could only be auxiliary personnel in the military forces of most major countries of the world. The very idea that a woman would command a combat vessel wasn't even a joke. It just wasn't thought of for women to command and supervise men, let alone be the commanding officer. Things are different today, and that's better all around, but it wasn't always thus. Star Trek, while always looking forward, was still always a product of the time in which it was produced.
@ResidentBob792 жыл бұрын
While we all know how ass-backwards that line was (and didn't Gene Roddenberry co-write that pile of excrement??), my head canon takes it as Janice's way of deflecting responsibility for her own failures... or that the life of a starship captain doesn't permit the luxury of a stable relationship, whichever. Unfortunately, there was another unintentionally sexist line (part of the very last line, in fact)... "Her life could have been as rich and as full as any WOMAN'S (gah)..." To me, "ANYONE'S" would have sufficed just fine. Alas.

I can save the ST: Discovery franchise. Start with Tilly. Tilly is too extra. No disrespect to the actor, I'm sure she's wonderful, but the new season needs to start with Tilly having a "transporter accident". Then, every episode should have Stamets cheating death from personal attacks, the Romulans, etc., and the season finale should have Stamets finally taken out by something really irrelevant like falling off a ladder in engineering or being squashed by a falling cargo container full of bolts. Then start the next season and don't mention Stamets at all. Like he was never on the show. Nobody notices he's gone. The Doctor didn't, the Captain, the ships cook, not even the tardigrade he abused the first season. Then at about the 5th or 6th Episode, call it, "Where's Stamets?" and have it start out with a really bad smell coming from one of the Jeffries Tubes. I don't know, sometimes great ideas just come to me.

Discovery had an interesting premise: Rebuild a fragmented Federation in the far (farther) future. If you ignore some of the woke garbage they stuck in there (they / them? Really?) among other things, it's not that bad. It might not be quite be MY Star Trek, but it's A Star Trek. It's an escape from reality. At least the bridge crew had more to do this season. By the way, Capt. Janeway didn't save the ship /universe all the time. Burnham shouldn't either.
@RRTNZ2 жыл бұрын
Actually, IMHO Janeway is a much more compelling character ( and I hated her sanctimonious attitude) because she really struggled, nearly died and failed a bunch of times - and the writers were smart enough to show us that she was occasionally dead wrong ( sometimes with terrible consequences). Janeway never saves the day single handed, she always needs the others - same with Kirk, Picard and Sisko. Burnham is space Jesus, she fixes everything and everyone loves her. The rest of the cast just exist to show us how great she is. Worst Star Trek character ever.
